Original Article (Wed 16th Mar, 2022): The official UK Microsoft Store has listed refurbished Xbox Series X consoles for sale, with prices starting at £419.99 – down from the console's standard RRP of £449.99.
It seems to be a pretty perfect way to get your hands on a console at a slightly reduced price, and thanks to Microsoft's 'Certified Refurbished' scheme, you won't have to worry about your product's quality. These refurbished Xbox consoles come with 12-month warranty included and will contain all the standard accessories and manuals that would be present in a brand-new system seen on a store shelf.
Better yet, you can also add Microsoft Complete to the deal for £39.00 if you want to, which typically provides up to three years of warranty for your Xbox console. So, even though it's refurbished, you're getting peace of mind that way. We've talked to Xbox support about this and they've advised that you do get the extended warranty even though it's refurbished, but ultimately you might want to double check yourself with the support team just to make sure.
"For added peace of mind, Microsoft Complete gives you extended coverage and support for up to 4 years on Surface plans, and up to 3 years on Xbox plans, so that you can work and play worry-free."
If you're interested, you can grab one below. Remember that you can use Microsoft Rewards points on this deal if you want to.
Microsoft says, "Xbox Series X (Certified Refurbished) offers the opportunity to buy the device at a discounted price. The device undergoes a complete refurbishment process before being offered for re-sale. Available exclusively at Microsoft Store."
If you prefer, brand new systems also seem to be available at the time of writing, for the usual RRP:

Any thoughts on what the issue was that led them to be returned to Microsoft?
Any idea how to do this in the US?
@KingDazzar
Nintendo fans: "My uncle works at Nintendo."
Xbox fans: "I used to work at Sony."
I just checked the US Microsoft store and it was $549 starting price.
Contacted support asking why the refurbished was more expensive than a brand new one, they support disappeared and the store no longer lists the product.
£30 saving for a second hand, originally faulty machine??? Not read all article but i’d want at least 3 year warranty!!
@creek_king My guess just law of average on defects. Nothing on any production line is 100%. Pretty sure they look them up and very good before resale though.
About 4 or 5 hours ago, Amazon had (new) Series X's in stock, for those of you still looking for one..
@eagletrippin Still available on Amazon as of 7:45am Central time
@sjbsixpack FYI Refurb doesn’t have to mean it was once faulty. There’s a whole reason why people send them back from buyers remorse, to not having the money anymore, unwanted gifts, duplicate buys etc. All these have to be tested, checked and repacked if opened. Being faulty and fixed is just one reason and most of the time whatever issues it had will have been fixed.
Though there is a chance that the underlying issue was harder to detect and slipped through testing, but that is what the 1 year warranty is for.
I wouldn’t recommend getting a second hand console for just £30 less. It’s a big purchase and you might regret if faulty.
Especially when a brand new console can be bought off the official Microsoft store using gift card tricks for around £380.
@themightyant but for £30 less??? Maybe if it was £100 less but £30???
@creek_king
I was thinking the same thing. I just got a SERIES X coming from PS5. Now I am nervous
To be fair, there is usually a difference between refurbished and second hand. My current phone was a refurb and it had clearly never been used. Didn't even feel like the box had ever been opened. Probably just got returned for some reason (bought the wrong one), inspected and resold at a cut down price.
I wouldnt buy a reverb unit as any intermittent fault might never have been picked up in the testing of the return.
it does come with a years warranty though and you can upgrade to 3 year warranty so maybe worth a go
Got mine a couple of days ago and was think I should of waited but then saw its only £30, what was the point , it should of been a minimum of 50
I'd rather have a brand new one for the extra £30
Great deal.
My Wii U was a refurb. Bought it for $200, and I've never had any issues with it (apart from it being the Wii U, of course).
Considering in the UK there is no issues what so ever getting a new series x, why bother with repairs one.
@Dezzy70 I'd imagine for the cost saving as these would of been checked and any necessary repairs made to ensure they are working as intended. Like buying 'new', these also come with 1yrs Warranty so also should offer the same 'peace of mind' as well as offer a £66 saving.
This brings the price 'closer' to a PS5 Digital console. The fact that its also under £400, makes it seem even cheaper - like £9.99 seems more reasonable than £10.
Regardless of whether there is availability of 'brand new' consoles, there will be people who would prefer to save money by buying 'used' - at least with a 'refurbished' option, you know its been checked over and made 'right' by 'professionals' and will come with the same Warranty as 'new' which you don't get with 'used'. Some may have just had a loose solder joint from the automated process for example, so someone has manually fixed that, reapplied any thermal paste etc.
Microsoft should copy sony and made a discless series x for $400, or $500 discless series x but with 2TB ssd. And make it white.
@BAMozzy
Ok point taken.
Xbox need a series x disc less for £350.
Also made available on Xbox all access.
It will help people that want one and cost and also give a boost in console sales.
I am a little surprised we have not seen one yet, but then again it is coming up to Christmas soon.
@Dezzy70 Or alternatively, buy a refurbished Series X because the Disc Drive is great for those of us with 20yrs of Discs - inc 4k HDR Bluray movies and all for a 'little' more than a 'discless' PS5...
@BAMozzy
It’s just an idea for the general public and those that fancy £350 disc less when out shopping 🛍
@Dezzy70 Except that its not as simple as just making a Series X without the drive - that requires making yet another set of molds and redesign to make a Discless version - you can't just remove the Disc drive and sell it cheaper...
For that little difference, I'd bet the majority of people would still prefer a Disc drive for the extra functionality and features that brings - its not exactly a massive console and space is an issue either...
Their budget friendly direction was to build a Series S without the Drive and cater more to the 1080p TV owners and up to 1440p Monitors because a LOT of people, especially those unlikely to have a $500 budget to spend on Consoles, don't have the latest 4k TV's with 120hz VRR and all the HDMI 2.1 specs.
I guess its not quite as bad as Sony who also put their Game Prices up so if you do buy the PS5 all Digital, then you are stuck with having to pay Sony Store prices or go without. I know the Series S also is limited to games in MS's store, but at least they aren't as expensive but still reduces consumer choice and neither are great for Backwards Compatibility support for all those discs you have from previous generations...
I don't know how popular the Discless PS5 has been - perhaps more than anticipated/expected due to lack of availability of the standard PS5. It's still a 'beast' and completely overkill for most kids in their Bedrooms. Which is where the Series S comes in - a £250 console that's going to work perfectly well with anyone who hasn't got space, budget, 4kTV's, etc and of course Parents who buy Kids these...
Consoles are Global and don't need 4k capable GPIU's. They are paying extra for little/no benefits so a Series S makes much more sense than a Series X (disc or not).
The fact that you can get a £450 console with a years warranty - everything you get as buying new - for little more than a Discless PS5 is why we don't need an official discless Series X...
@BAMozzy
Well we have the Series s and that is good.
Would never say do away with or replace the series s.
Just thought the series x discless might be a nice edition to the family and an additional option for those that want top power for £350.
I would have purchased a disc less series x for £350 instead of my disc version.
@Dezzy70 a discless series X makes perfect sense and I too hope we get one. Would be a nice middle ground option and I for one would seriously consider.
@Dezzy70 I would have bought discless series X if it were an option, when I bought my second ps5 I bought discless.
I dont even know if the disc works in my series X, its never been used, its just a waste. 😀
To be fair, same is true of my first ps5, the only disc its seen was a 4k bluray to test it works...
As for a refurb, I certainly wouldnt take that risk for such a paltry saving. Refurb will pick up constant faults and obvious shortcomings, but they are not in the test rig long enough to pick up more troublesome or intermittent issues, so you are more likely to experience an issue imo.
I had my disc drive crap out, literally 4 days after the manufacturer warranty. I had to plead to them on the phone to give me a new one. They agreed because I was on Xbox live since day one. Sent my system in and they had it about 2 weeks shipping it back with a new drive. Maybe these are part of this with permanent returns?
@Spazmonic I bought several refurbished 360's back in the day and they are still going strong. I had the ethernet plug to burn out on 1 and they replaced it right away, only took about 10 days to ship it off and get another. When my 4 kids lived at home I had a 360 in each of their rooms so being able to by them at a discount was a big plus.
