We're only around a year and a half out since Xbox Series X|S launched, but are we about to see more Xbox hardware? The XboxEra podcast — which had Phil Spencer on as a guest last week — discussed the matter in a recent 'Rumour Mill' show segment.
One of the show's hosts, Shpeshal Nick, claims that he's heard of new Xbox hardware to be shown in 2022. The host goes on to say that it be a little different to what people are expecting:
"All I was told that I'm allowed to say, is that sometime this year, or I should say maybe sometime this year because there's a lot of stuff delaying things lately. Whether it's the Ukraine situation, still COVID issues, chip shortages, all that sort of stuff so I'm not going to say it's definitely happening this year."
"But, I've been told it should be this year [...] I'm saying it should be this year."
"Xbox currently has some hardware to show [...] that falls into a different bucket than people are probably expecting."
And here's a timestamp of the discussion:
The show segment's name, the rumour mill, tells us to take this one with a pinch of salt and we definitely will. We are left wondering what this "different" hardware could be though.
What do you make of this? Could we see new hardware announced this year? Let us know your thoughts below.

Chromecast type Gamepass
I'd take an Xbox VR at this point, my Quest 1 is really struggling with modern releases and id prefer a Xbox connected replacement. I don't need a series XX yet and a portable Xbox seems... counter to gamepass streaming.
More likely alternative is a new controller with haptic and resistive triggers
Xbox TV incoming.
A Nvidia Shield TV type device with game pass, yes please
Gamepass for Smart TV's
Yeah, it's going to be the streaming stick surely.
What I'm expecting is some type of 'dongle' to turn any display into a 'Game Pass' streaming machine. As you can't really sync a controller to a display, its likely to have some 'Bluetooth' or Xbox wireless built in and probably Wifi too.
Whether it has any 'storage' or not, I don't know because it obviously couldn't work 'offline' with no 'hardware' built in to run it and all game saves, preferences etc would be stored in the cloud.
I do think that its much more likely that 'new' Hardware would be aimed more at Xbox Cloud gaming. AMDs new 'mobile' CPU's though do come with around 3-4TF of GPU performance which may open up more 'hardware' options for 'local' play but I think some 'plug-in' dongle type device to bring cloud gaming to any display is most likely myself...
Chances are a steaming stick but I'm hoping they also releases a elite 3 controller which fixes the probs the elite 2 has
Hmm bucket eh? An Xbox Mop perhaps?
@CrazyJF but it's a matter of getting the software on TVs. It would be much easier with a dongle.
"..into a different bucket."
Finally happening, The KFConsole by MS! Original, crispy or gamepass.
That's my wish:
Xbox Series Portable (Handheld).
Am thinking perhaps a handheld device of sorts to go with x cloud
@CrazyJF it would still be easier with a dongle that they can update directly.
With the TV app stores, it's harder. MS would have to contact all the TV companies and get them on board, and not all of them would wanna participate, especially not Sony. Then updates would be annoying. it's why you don't see smaller streaming services like Shudder on TV app stores.
A VR device would be great. But I'd rather an AR device like the HoloLens, there's just so much more that can be done with AR.
Gamepass built into new tvs/game pass streaming stick, MS pretty much confirmed that this would happen at some point this year during the xbox Bethesda round table talk(at least I think that was the event where it was mentioned)
While, I'd love it to be a VR device in partnership with Quest or something, it's gotta be a Game Pass streaming stick/smart tv app.
I'd like an Elite Controller V3. I still have my first gen and I am trying to hold on for a new version. Fingers crossed.
I'm hoping for a Xbox Freezer to go with the Xbox fridge. That way you can keep some Ice Pops at hand for the summer gaming sessions.
i'd be interested in a portable device, but it's probably the streaming stick. Microsoft is REALLY dedicated to this "we don't care what you play games on as long as you're in our ecosystem" thing. the streaming device would be a low-spec, low cost option.
Think it'll be a Series S with a disc drive myself
@Kopite never gonna happen
Its gonna be a stream stick as we know they don't have VR and I don't believe they would do another console version just yet.
I'd want another controller version, preferably with gyro, but I doubt there's a strong demand for that, so that seems unlikely too!
White digital only xbox series x will be a good hardware.
You mean like a fridge?
@Rural-Bandit a digital series x would be so close to the series s in price I think they’d have to drop the series s price to move units. Which is fine since the series s has had a few sales already.
But I think it’s a streaming stick.
I hope Nintendo makes a switch tv box as a side note.
@FraserG I agree. And it will sell gangbusters.
@CrazyJF I don't think my 2016 TV has Bluetooth. It doesn't matter if it does or doesn't, it might not have the software to work with the Xbox Game Pass software and/or introduce additional Lag as its sent from the TV's Bluetooth receiver, through their processing to the app/device. It may well be better to use MS's own wireless protocol built in to a 'dongle' instead...
I hope it's a Windows 11 TV dongle with connections for a Egpu, power supply, and mouse & keyboard with built in Xbox wireless connection 😁
I'd love a USB stick, particularly if it can stream from my Series X. The PS Vita TV thing was mostly considered a joke by the market, but I loved it as it was dirt cheap and essentially let me have a PS4 in multiple rooms.
Xbox series portable would be incredible.
I can't believe we're getting a new Kinect. Wow.
I would love to see an XB version of SteamDeck.
Won't be vr they've already said they aren't interested in it
I won't be surprised in the slightest if they launch a streaming device, it'll just stream Xbox Live games. Or maybe it'll be a new steering wheel or sim setup? To go along with Forza?
X-Box handheld? All digital, plays everything up to X-Box One natively, and plays Series games streaming.
likely a streaming stick but i’d siht a brick for a xbox handheld!
Xbox Printer to make it easier to share screenshots.
Xbox Handheld please!
Most likely:
Streaming stick (or puck).
Less likely:
A full size Xbox fridge.
In our dreams:
A handheld Xbox
In the dreams of perverts:
Xbox vibrator and a Phil sex doll.
Given Microsoft had already officially announced the streaming stick last year, that would be something expected so I think it's something else. Going with Kinect 3.0 as my prediction with full backwards compatibility for Kinect 2.0 games.
"Xbox currently has some hardware to show [...] that falls into a different bucket than people are probably expecting."
We were expecting the streaming stick , they more or less announced that already... so it could be something else entirely, so I hope a steambox (custom steamdeck in a partnership with Valve).
@Grumblevolcano would love a new Kinect, and if so they should make it full backwards compatible with the Kinect 1, cause I got a lot of 360 kinect games on my shelf, but my 360 with kinect were stolen.
A series 3 Xbox Elite controller perhaps?
A streaming stick, controller, and 3 months of GamePass for $99.99.
@TheSilverFalcon Sadly Microsoft already confirmed back in November that no more original Xbox and 360 games are coming to XB1/Series X|S backwards compatibility.
Xbox mini freezer you heard it here first
@Kopite
I would love that to happen.
Or a controller with gyro.
I feel like we are all expecting the plug and play Gamepass stick. And that Microsoft thinks we’re expecting a different Series machine. I personally hope we are getting a VR device to compete with or outperform the PSVR 2.
Hoping for a handheld…..figuring it is not.
Xbox Pro Confirmed!!!1
I'm thinking it may either be a "Dual Sense" type controller since they were polling about such things, or some VR/AR component (MetaVerse(TM) compliant), or a Phil Boy, a handheld type device, official, for playing Game Pass on the go (because Nintendon't play ball.)
@CrazyJF all smart tvs have stores and they already have the android and the ios apps ready, so they only need to create a tizen and webos one to cover most of the market
the problem is that tv manufacturers are not upgrading the os at all (webos) or just for a few versions. So after a few years MS will have to maintain a dozen different versions of their apps. A lot easier to release a dingle they can upgrade at will
