The Xbox App Now Allows You To Install PC Games To Any Folder

Update (Wed 2nd Mar, 2022): Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox App updates on PC are now available to everyone, allowing you to install games to any folder of your choice, as well as get to access to files for select titles.

The Xbox team also says that this update enables the "ability to mod more games".

"You won’t have to re-install your existing games, just right click on them in the left-hand side of your app and click on “manage,” then “enable.” You can also move and repair your games from here.

To install the latest Xbox app updates and get access today, open the Microsoft Store app on Windows, then navigate to your Library and select ‘Update’ next to the Xbox app."

Original story (Fri 25th Feb, 2022): Way back in November last year, Xbox announced plans to allow more flexibility for PC installs. Now, that plan is in motion, for Xbox Insiders at least, as part of the program's latest update.

Basically, anyone installing games via the Xbox app on PC can now choose their install whereabouts. Previously, games downloaded from the app were placed into a locked folder, meaning accessing config files and the likes was troublesome.

The insider patch also addresses a number of issues that cropped up with certain games in the app. These include compatibility issues with Darkest Dungeon, DIRT 5, Gears 5, Hades, Hitman Trilogy, Lost Words: Beyond the Page, Slay the Spire, and Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

The update post does say that some titles are still not compatible, and are being actively worked on before the feature's public release. Those games are Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Back 4 Blood, Cricket 19, Phantasy Star Online 2, State of Decay 2, and titles that are offering a pre-install.

All in all, this is a welcome move that allows for more flexibility with PC game installs, particularly Xbox Game Pass titles, where users are more likely to use the Xbox app.
