There was a lot of buzz back on January 1st when a set of achievements for GoldenEye 007 on Xbox were discovered along with a bunch of images, and now it looks like we'll finally get official news on the remaster very soon.
As reported by VGC, it was stated by VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb on the latest episode of the Giant Bomb "Grubbsnax" show that he believes the game's reveal "is probably coming pretty soon, I’m thinking next couple of weeks," with Grubb also suggesting that Microsoft will reveal it rather than Nintendo.
In regards to the latter, VGC also says it's heard Microsoft will be the one to announce the remaster.
We're still not quite sure what to expect from the release, although the leaked screenshots appear to suggest it will simply be an HD touch-up of the original N64 version, rather than based on the cancelled Xbox 360 remaster / remake.
As soon as we get more details on this one, we'll be sure to let you know. Let's hope it's soon!

Hopefully we get to see it on the second batch of february GP titles.
Can't wait for this. I still boot up my N64 every few years to give this one a playthrough. One of my favourite games of all time. Very very excited.
It was an amazing experience back in 1998 and we would play all nighters in college with the loser doing a shot. The same roommate would usually lose the first three matches and it all went to heck from there. Can’t wait to play this on modern hardware and my same group of friends will be getting back together for an old school night.
If this is on Gamepass in February, I’ll revise my score on how good Gamepass has been this year. Love this game, still love it
@Medic_Alert
Think you are spot on there, absolutely loved it on the N64 but it’s not aged well.
I guess everyone will jumping in for ten minutes will give some amazing figures of many have played like we get now. Which I find all a bit false really and really annoying when companies make a thing of it.
It’s like having a Lamborghini that everyone can drive for a bit, but no one ever buys it, so no money is made. False figures these, how many have played especially when the game is on game pass.
Doesn't Amazon own the license to James bond now
Jeff Grubb is not the insider he claims to be and it's funny that he says that just after Nintendo Direct. Yes, I also know that Nintendo will not reveal it. I mean, they just had a Nintendo Direct, right? I mean, after all the clues that have been leaked and a Nintendo Direct that didn't mention Goldeneye 007, he is revealing that the leaked clues are related to Microsoft and not Nintendo.
However, I believe the rest of the sources, some of them directly related to the cancelled yet finished and finally leaked Xbox 360 remaster. It's that Xbox 360 remaster the one I expect to be released on Xbox, because to me the N64 screenshots attached to the achievements are merely nostalgia icons.
@Dezzy70 I think that would be the case for some of you. For me, @aj102404 @somnambulance and the rest of the people that love this game, it will be the first official re-release of a wonderful game, one of the best ever made, one that is more entertaining and fun than most shooters made since and one that is also quite difficult to emulate correctly. Even the N64 version runs badly on Series X Retroarch and the Xbox 360 version doesn't run well on normal computers. So I get the hype.
PlayStation needs more shooters and Xbox needs more third person action rpgs. But they both continue to do what they do best. Oh well.
“It’s not aged well” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It’s still better than most new FPS.
People will play this and realise that most of these new gimmick filled FPS are not a patch on the king.
@Banjo- @Dezzy70 @aj102404 Absolutely! When Quake recently re-released, I didn’t play it for ten minutes and leave for something more modern. I played through it again and had more fun with it than I’ve had with a lot of more modern fps games. My parents still have the N64 hooked up at their house, along with the Wii, Xbox, PS2, SNES, and NES (and the WiiU they bought after I moved out). My family will still play N64 titles over newer titles when we get together, and Goldeneye is always the first or last game we pick up. To have the game optimized and in HD, regardless of how polygonal the game looks, what a dream! As a MP FPS, I’d only place the Halo series above it, for sure. After all these years, that we don’t have another MP FPS allowing for “mines and slappers only,” my god what a loss!
Honestly, I’ve become such a barbarian in the FPS genre in comparison to the civility my family and friends would show in Goldeneye too. To think we would wait to begin our hunt until everyone had a weapon…
My N64 is also still hooked up to the living room tv. Diddy Kong Racing and Smash Bros. are going to feature heavy after supper tonight.
It would be amazing if they released a physical version..
@Bmartin001 They could at least make a limited edition with the soundtrack and the original film soundtrack. That would be cool but unfortunately not very likely.
Is there a chance of the EA 007 games also getting re-released? I never finished any of the EA Bond games and would like to do that for a remastered release.
Playing this game with some proper modern controls and cleaned up visuals sounds like a dream come true.
I don't understand the interest in this. It was amazing in 1998 because there were few multiplayer console shooters at the time but more importantly it had a unique button layout and aiming controls on the N64 controller which are incredibly dated now. Updating the button layout and aiming controls probably won't make it any less dated. Some games age superbly - Mario, Sonic, Streets of Rage... others not so well.
Really excited to see how it will play compared to modern FPS's. Just a shame we have to wait until August to find out!
@TJ81 "Updating the button layout and aiming controls probably won't make it any less dated".
Have you played the Perfect Dark remaster on Xbox?
I played through Perfect Dark for the first time late last year and loved it, prolly one of my all time favorite shooters (but I have also never played a CoD game so it's not saying much). If Goldeneye is anything like Perfect Dark I am sure I will like it.
@uptownsoul Well I mean, they did remake the game back in 2010 for the Wii and it played pretty much like a Call of Duty game. It was also released on PS3 and 360 in 2011, but I don't recall many people caring about those versions at the time.
I'm personally more interested in the original experience and as some have pointed out, if it controls like the Perfect Dark remaster then I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
Honestly, what's the track record of Jeff Grubb? Using words like "probably" and "I'm thinking X" is more indicative of opinion, not fact. Granted, people in his position have insider knowledge that the general public doesn't have, but those who like dropping hints about rumoured projects need to be looked at very closely for consistency. 🤔
I am completely tired of remasters. Give us re-makes and I will be in. Give me a remaster and I will just ignore it.
Goldeneye should be remade in modern tech.
@Banjo- I haven't played the Perfect Dark remaster. Always tempted but didn't want to ruin a good memory. Do you recommend giving it a go?
Its a HD port...
That kinda bums me out a bit.
Could be on Xbox and ns
Expect to pay an extra $15 (or 1500 Bond Bucks; only available in bundles of 2000) per multiplayer skin.
@TJ81 Yes. Beating the final boss on N64 even in Easy it's very difficult, mostly because of the frame rate. The whole game is very enjoyable on Xbox with smooth 60fps and much better controls. The game still is as great as it was.
@Banjo- Thank you for the tip! It still has one of the greatest soundtracks ever in my opinion, along with Banjo Kazooie!
@TJ81 Yep, they are awesome soundtracks 😊.
@TJ81
There is interest because the campaign is incredibly fun and completely compliments the movie. It’s rare a video game based on a movie is this good, but the devs took their time and released it in 97, two years after Goldeneye hit the big screen.
Multi-player and all it’s options was the perfect couch multi-coop. Slappers, remote mines, proximity mines, license to kill, all very fun options or modes. It still holds up in this regard.
Frame rate drops really hit it on N64, but you kinda dealt with it because the gameplay was so fun. My main reasons for being excited is stable frame rates and being able to play it on a comfortable controller. Not the N64.
@aj102404 You had me at 'slappers' and make excellent points. Maybe I'm just realizing I won't have couch multiplayer buddies at my age. I hope they implement an online multiplayer successfully.
