If you like binge-watching documentaries, you're going to love this! Xbox's new six-part documentary series chronicling the history of the brand is available as of today, and you can watch it for free on YouTube. You'll find the vids below!
This is a fascinating set of discussions talking about everything from the birth of the original Xbox, to the highs and lows of the Xbox 360 era, to the absolute despair of the Xbox One launch (even former Xbox head Don Mattrick makes an appearance!). It's really well put together, so definitely worth your while.
You can watch Power On: The Story of Xbox below, and here's what the official description says about it:
"Xbox almost didn’t happen. Find out why in this behind-the-scenes, six-part series that takes you back to the scrappy beginnings of Microsoft's video game console. It’s the untold story of the people behind the box, glitches and all."

Looking forward to this but with a 4 hour running time will probably need to wait a bit.
On the watch list it goes.
I spotted this earlier.
I am hoping that it will be available to 'buy' for free on the Xbox movies app so it can be watched outside of YouTube.
Watched a little bit of this morning while I was working out. It's pretty well put-together, honest, and interesting.
It's crazy to think that Xbox COULD have never happened if it wasn't for a passionate group of individuals. It's the epitome of the whole "group of 'misfits' create something revolutionary" story
I've been gaming on Xbox since the big old OG. Then I got my 360, and when Gears of War 2 came out, I was playing a huge amount of Horde. It was at that time, whilst playing GoW2 horde that I met two of my closest friends (I went on to become Godfather to one of the son's, despite my being 20 years older than both of them!).
When the big TV, TV, TV reveal happened at E3, both my friends jumped off the Xbox ship and went over to PC. I reluctantly followed them, buying a gaming rig that cost me just over £2000. Then 3 years ago, I ended up having to replace it at a cost of a further £2300. All that despite having bought an Xbox One on release day (though the Kinect that came with it never came out of the box!) and then buying the mid-generation Xbox One X upgrade too. Despite the outlay on PC's, I still invested way more time playing on my Xbox.
I have to say, gaming on a PC is nowhere near as simple as gaming on a console, and I spent many an evening when I should have been gaming with my mates, just trying to get a game to run on my PC, and oft times trying to get the PC itself to work! And so I was really pleased when both my mates jumped back on to the Xbox for the release of the Series generation, and I credit my powers of persuasion, and the ability to extol the virtues of Xbox gaming, for them having retired their PCs.
So, in short, Dan owes me £4300. I'm sure he can afford it...
Watched the first episode with breakfast. Even as someone whos' not a huge Xbox person, I found it very well done and interesting! Look forward to watching the rest throughout the week
Just started to watch the first one and it just led into the next and next, now I have watched the lot , whoops. Having been with Xbox from Day one, Beta tested Xbox Live and had all but the Xbox One console, it was fascinating to watch the journey
Was a great watch and as somebody who had an original xbox some of it was kind of emotional and brought back a flood of awesome memories
A very interesting watch. I remember a LOT of the talk about MS entering the Console Market and I was sucked in by Halo. That was 'the' game I wanted to play back in 2001 and the rest of the line-up made it a no-brainer. I wouldn't spend hundreds on Hardware just to play '1' £40 game so the rest made it an easy decision.
I was definitely late to the Xbox Live party as I never really wanted to play games with complete strangers. My MP experience had always been local split screen, playing with friends/family together in the room. My Xbox allowed me to do that without Gold so I couldn't see the point or willing to pay a monthly fee for something I couldn't see myself using. Therefore I didn't jump in until the 360 era.
I jumped on-board with Kinect at launch - especially as I played Wii with my Kids and thought they'd enjoy it - they much preferred Kinect Dance/Fitness games than on Wii and the Wii gathered Dust. I wasn't put off by Kinect 2.0 and the 'cost' of XB1 seemed 'comparable' to PS4 with a Camera as they 'bundled' that in with one of the launch options. To me, it seemed that Sony intended to Bundle the Camera in, but made it optional after MS's E3 disaster. It worked out cheaper to go with Xbox & Kinect, than to buy a PS4 with Camera as I still had a lot of months of Gold and PS4 now required PS+, I had a Season Pass for CoD: Ghosts on XB360 that would transfer to XB1 saving me 'money' so it made sense to go Xbox at launch, pick up PS4 after Christmas.
You could argue that the XB1 was the 'best' thing to happen to MS. That really taught them a massive lesson and even before the Console was a few months old, you could see that they had learned that lesson. Phil came in, empowered the team and gave them 'focus'. It was never going to be an 'overnight' turn around, they had to 'live' with that 'millstone' around their neck for the 'generation', shift from the 'initial' message of TV Media box to games, games and games. ID@Xbox, Backwards Compatibility, Studio acquisitions etc and being the 'leading' innovator in gaming. The online communities, our online profile & achievements, having storage built in, digital game purchases, streaming media, voice/gesture control (maybe not so much in gaming now but you see these everywhere) and now Game Pass allowing us to play our games anywhere on devices we have...
I'm glad they appointed Phil as he is a Gamer first and foremost, understands what gamers want and expect and what Xbox represented - Innovation, most powerful hardware and easy for 'developers' to create for and to reach as many people as possible - not just the 'affluent' ones that can afford to buy your hardware. Games are the heart, the soul of the ecosystem and build Communities - the hardware may facilitate it.
Its clear that Community is very important to MS, the Studio's are joining a Community of devs. They bought Minecraft and its Community (regardless of Platform), they bought Zenimax which has a Bethesda Community and 'Doom' community and you can see Xbox is fully committed to making their community as inclusive, as welcoming and safe for everyone as possible.
I am very excited for the Future of Xbox and Gaming!
Finished watching it a bit ago. Great, honest, and retrospective piece. I am very glad they were not shy about showing their own dirty laundry.
Watched the first 3 episodes, up to the launch of the original Xbox. As a fan of both documentaries and gaming this checked all the boxes. Such a well done documentary and best of all it's narrated by Laura Bailey!!!
Watched it. Really well done. They don't shy away from most things - crazy how much they misjudged the market with the xboxone. And the fact that Xbox only exists through Microsofts paranoia over Sony killing the pc.
Nice to see a bit of bite from Xbox there that they saw Sony as arrogant.
Also a good insight on just how much Xbox brought to gaming and shaped it.
At the end though the whole 'you can now play on your phones' cheesy grins I reckon will age as gracefully as 'TV TV TV'.
I'd love to see a playstation one of these...what they were thinking when Xbox entered the market. When the 360 was 100 less, and then red ring of death. And the whole sharing games thing.
