Xbox has added touch controls to a wide array of Xbox Game Pass titles for use with Cloud Gaming over the past year, and Microsoft has revealed today that they're proving a hit, with almost 20% of xCloud players using them exclusively.
As highlighted by The Verge, Xbox Senior Program Manager Monty Hernandez explained that the company has seen "on average, a 2x increase in usage for titles available via Xbox Cloud Gaming, across genres, that implement touch controls."
In addition, a few select titles have boasted 30% of players using touch controls exclusively:
- Hades
- New Super Lucky’s Tale
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon
- Scarlet Nexus
- Dragon’s Quest XI
- Minecraft Dungeons
- Football Manager 2022 Xbox Edition
It sounds like they're going down a treat then, and according to Hernandez, the key to their success is that the touch-enabled games included with Cloud Gaming are "relevant and, most importantly, play well with touch controls.”

Football Manager if I play on my iPad is like having the game off the iOS store except I can cloud save with PC and Xbox. As you don’t need to replicate a cursor and can just touch the relevant buttons it’s really well done. I hope they do something with other strategy type games.
It was really well executed on Minecraft dungeons too but I only played that to get some reward points
I use Razer Kishi when playing on phone.
I use my Razer Kishi most of the time, but have to say that the touch controls work really well in quite a few games. More often than not I'll just boot up Slay the Spire with touch controls to avoid the (incredibly minor) faff of plugging the Kishi in. I even completed a mission of Halo Wars 2 using touch controls while on my lunch break at work the other day.
Sure, it's not the best control method, but it's really great to have the option.
Touch controls are garbage. I need a physical controller to play a game. With the exception of like Candy Crush and smaller simple phone games, touch controls are useless... Your fingers get in the way of way too much and they slid all over the screen and just no...
I feel this is largely a generational thing. Having grown up with a controller I find touch controls awkward and imprecise. Yet I watch my niece and nephew use it with finesse.
That said an old dog can learn new tricks. I was away from home a bit this year and kept playing Genshin Impact via touch controls on mobile, previously I’d had been playing with a controller up till then. I’m getting better, but it’s still not my preferred way to play.
It’s good we have the option
I find it interesting that the list of 30% exclusive titles as also titles that would be more popular with players more used to using their cellphones to play that style of game such as Genshin.
This makes sense as much as it doesn't. It doesn't make sense cuz touch controls kinda suck and are hard. It makes sense cuz I'm old and the target market for them is the younger gen that's constantly on a phone and it's just a natural fit for them.
I've used touch controls while sitting on the porcelain throne at work or just playing over lunch hour. I use the clip at home with a controller.
@MegaWatts I agree that although i don't prefer them, having an option for touch controls is very handy for certain situations. And i tend to pick games that are easier for the controls like slay the spire as well.
I think this just proves what I always figured, how the whole cloud streaming concept is a big hit with the mobile phone crowd. Makes sense for that too, as they are always connected to a network and modern high-speed networks make it easy to stream.
"Generational" or not, there's a reason you're not going to see an eSports tournament using Steam Controllers and touch screen inputs. And why glass cockpit aircraft still have yolks and analogue throttles. It doesn't just "seem" imprecise. It is imprecise.
I'm surprised at Hades, and somewhat with Scarlet Nexus being that popular with touch. Hades is brutal fast and definitely a game I tried with touch right at launch and decided that's just a terrible fit.
I can't get on with touch controls. My thumb often leaves the circle of influence or I press somewhere in no man's land rather than a "button".
When I haven't been able to get to my console I fired up Hades on my phone just to get the daily Game Pass game played. Does that count towards the 30% even though the game only ran for 10 seconds?
good to see that it's a used feature so they'll hopefully keep at including it in new additions. It makes sense that it's popular as if you're gaming on your phone what's more awkward using touch controls, or carrying a bulky Xbox controller and stand/clip around with you everywhere?
Unfortunately I've never gotten Xcloud to work on my iPhone 7 as it's always got, literally, seconds of input lag despite being on fast and stable wifi that's fine for my PC and Xbox. It meets all the minimum specs, but it's never worked :/
