Chinese tech giant Tencent has announced today that it has acquired the Back 4 Blood developer Turtle Rock Studios, but says it'll have no effect on that specific game — and the existing team will continue to run all studio operations.
Eddie Chan, Chief Strategy Officer of Tencent Games Global enthused that the company "can’t wait to see what comes next, and we’re excited to be part of their future.”
"We are huge fans of Turtle Rock’s games, especially their amazing approach to creating co-operative online games."
Meanwhile, Turtle Rock Studios President and General Manager Steve Goldstein explained that the deal "will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit."
“We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios."

This is disappointing. The CCP's control over content is alarming and industry consolidation, especially in the CCP's hands, is dangerous for creative freedom.

Welp, there goes that developer...
Well that's rubbish.
@Bdbrady Yeah welcome to this new big corporate monopoly age, where everybody is owned by a few massive corporations.
Good help us. Some takeovers mean quality but Tencent means rubbish,
CCP, this is how free speech dies.
@JayJ This is about CCP controlling more games. Good by free speech!
It's almost as if they want me to go indie only.
Oh, boy! The comments will be spicy today!! 🍿🥤
@Jarobusa Tencent is trying to move their HQ to singapore to evade the CCP, according to recent news
@Savage_Joe Does that matter? If anyone or company wants to do business in China, they have to follow CCP rules.
Look at the NBA, Nike, etc.
@Jarobusa that's why tencent is trying to leave
NBA, Nike, etc are just woke companies that bent the knee to china on purpose
I honestly belive tencent will acquire a few more developers with Warner Bros and the guys who own THQ next, and then once they have a huge portfolio of developers tencent will release their own console, calling it now
Or at the very least their own streaming service
@Savage_Joe 100% agree on Nike and NBA
@UltimateOtaku91 That might be fun. Like I always wanted to see a new console from.a different company come out.
@Ihavenomouthandimust yeah I can't remember the last "new" console from someone other than the big three, and I'm not classing stadia as that wasn't a console lol
@UltimateOtaku91 Poor stadia lol. Yeah it would be nice to see a new player enter the game so to speak. Things would definitely get more competitive. It would be exciting regardless and I think you might be right, with all their acquisitions it does seem like they're building up to it.
@UltimateOtaku91 so, you didn't knew about the ouya and the soulja boy console? 😧
@Jarobusa the west is doing just fine on it’s own destroying free speech thanks 🤣
This is bad news, anyone owned by Tencent is subject to the CCP and all the baggage that brings with it. Another sad day in the gaming industry.
@Savage_Joe oh yeah the ouya lol wasn't that just android gaming? I didn't think people actually thought the soulja boy console was legit though? Like legally as it was just old retro games which they didn't have the licenses for
Sure, they can "move to Singapore" for their official incorporation HQ...doesn't mean they're still not tied to the gills within the CCP. can't change that DNA, ownership, etc. That's a PR stunt to pretend they're friendly. They along with Ali designed and operate the social credit/big brother system. Any company that connected to the CCP "leaves" the CCP about as easily as someone "leaves" the mob.
IDK if they're releasing a console or just launching a streaming platform or PC store. Physical hardware doesn't seem their style.
@Royalblues Or another good Little Big Planet/Sackboy...
@Ihavenomouthandimust I'd like sega to get back into the console market
BRB, uninstalling Back 4 Blood.
Nothing good ever comes from Tencent. 🤦
@UltimateOtaku91 Releasing a closed ecosystem console now would be extremely foolish. The smart money is on a streaming service.
@Xiovanni Hong Kong remains totally autonomous. Ask anyone there! They'll all agree! And remember all smart devices are always recording all audio.
@Would_you_kindly Dreamcast X or Dreamcast 2 oh man I would love it
@NEStalgia There is no war in Ba Sing Se.
Well guess that's a game I can delete off my Xbox.
Well f***.
Yes, PureXbox, that is all i have to say.
Tencent produce naff rubbish.
