John Madden - the voice, face and name of EA's long-running Madden NFL series has passed away, aged 85.
While he was known mostly as a legendary coach and broadcaster, he had a huge impact on the video game industry as well. EA's series was around on Xbox's original platform and initially got its start on the Apple II in 1988.
Here's a message from EA (via Twitter) remembering this sports legend:
NFL's official account also paid its respect to his involvement in the video game series over the years:
On behalf of the Pure Xbox community, our thoughts go out to John's family and friends during this tough time.

He may be gone but his legacy will continue.
R.I.P. John Madden
Such a sad loss.
RIP Coach
Hopefully EA do a classy cover for Madden 23
Even if you didn't know football you knew John Madden.
It's funny cause when I was a kid he did commercials for Ace Hardware (a chain of hardware stores in the US) and one day I saw him on the cover of a football game for the SNES at my local video store. I thought why on earth would you get a guy that does commercials for a hardware store for the cover of a football game. Needless to say that was before I knew how big of Legend he was in football.
R.I.P Coach a legend that will be missed.
I played his games on Sega Genesis before getting into watching the sport. I loved listening to his commentary on game day. There were a lot of announcers that tried to imitate him later on but he is the original. God bless him, may he rest in peace.
I don't like football or sports in general but still a sad read. Even without watching games you've seen him on tv. Probably the most "fun", approachable personality in football history... Almost could make even me like the game. Almost.
Yeah @tasuki I remember those commercials too! He's done several other commercials for other companies over the years iirc.
