The popular PC ARPG Grim Dawn launched earlier today on Xbox in the form of Grim Dawn: Definitive Edition, and reports have been somewhat mixed so far, with some suggesting the port is great, and a small few suggesting it isn't.
Those who have complaints have primarily cited the game's low 1080p, 30fps target, graphics running at supposedly "medium" settings, and suggestions that the frame rate is uncapped on Xbox Series X when it doesn't appear to be.
In response, a developer at the company has taken to Reddit to refute some of those suggestions:
"The game runs on High settings, or higher. We openly said the game targets 1080p at 30fps, so if someone is going to try to scare people off because it does exactly what was advertised, I’m not sure what to say to that."
"I was informed that the fps is unlocked, and I'll trust the word of our programmer on that. I can't verify for myself what that means in practice as I don't have a Series X so I'm not going to make outlandish claims.
That said, we’ve already committed to squeezing out more from the Series S/X consoles when we have a dev kit. I wish we had the pull of a AAA studio to get one of those years ago, but we do not. We are on the waiting list to receive ONE dev kit, which will hopefully happen sooner rather than later."
The developer also went on to acknowledge that there have been some valid concerns about the text being too small to read in the Xbox version, which he says is "definitely on our radar and we hope to have a solution soon."
As for everything else though, he's keen to ensure that people don't fall prey to "misleading information":
"If you have any doubts about our work, you can simply scroll through 5 years of Grim Dawn updates to see where we stand on our commitment to our products.
But please don't base your purchase decision off of misleading information."
If you want to grab Grim Dawn: Definitive Edition for yourself, it's available right now from the Microsoft Store for £45.99 / $54.99, containing the base Grim Dawn experience and "two sprawling expansion packs."
For reference, here's one of the more positive reports about the Xbox version:

Well, points for honesty that you don't have a dev kit, I guess? Kinda ballsy to admit all that and then say 'everything is fine according to our programmer's. I have no idea what this game is but that's a pretty high entry point for a port, that you can't test internally properly.
I always thought this port was being developed for Xbox One (wasn't it announced long before Series X was even a thing?). So it not being super shiny and spectacular on Series X when they haven't had the opportunity to work on one seems kinda fair enough. I had wondered whether everything being marketed as being for 'Xbox One & Series X|S' might hurt some smaller devs that haven't had a chance to enhance their games for the newer systems. If it's not running well on Xbone then people have a right to moan and expect some rapid updates though.
The game on PC is absolutely cracking and they have supported it for years with updates and new content, so it seems very harsh to jump straight on the 'lazy developers are lazy' bandwagon.
@BionicDodo Yep, the port was developed for Xbox One. It's not officially optimised for Series X or Series S right now.
I'm not very knowledgeable about the dev kits and such, but it's a bit weird that there's a waiting list to get them. It obviously made it impossible for them to optimize it at all for the Series consoles.
The price is too high for me to jump in to a game that's nearly 10 years old. It's up my alley, so maybe it'll be a pretty good port by the time it drops in price.
Great game; terrible port.
Ya I was pumped to see this coming to the X but, for the price, and the lack of next gen features, coupled with so much else out there to play right now, going to take a pass on it.
The text size is an issue I will admit that. For the people complaining about everything else it's an Xbox one game not a series x game. The price is fine for the amount of content in it. yes it's been on the PC for awhile on the PC you had to purchase all the dlc the game comes with all that on Xbox I think the price is more than fair. If you give the game q chance you will see that it's a gem.
Bit steep for me but will definitely get this at some point down the line. I didn't realise that all the screenshots from the store are from the pc version, surely that is a bit misleading... Look forward to playing this when it gets optimized for series X though!
Devkit or not. Trying the game on different TV sizes to make sure the UI is big enough should be the base minimum. The PC version have a slider for UI-size!
I had been looking forward to this game since I heard it was coming out, but between the price, my backlog and halo infinite coming out soon I’m going to wait and see if they can iron out the kinks and see if it goes on sale. I own the game on pc, but got it on a steam sale and my computer has never been powerful enough to run it.
@Sveakungen The PC version does have a slider and I agree that it's kinda weird the Xbox one does not. I'm very confident they will fix it. That being said I hope the game is a success on Xbox they have worked so hard on it and they are a great studio with a small team
I bought it and have put a few hours into it. Its fine. Not amazing, but i'm enjoying it. It had apparently been in the works for a few years now, so they obviously had some dev issues. It works. The problem it has is a basic HUD scaling issue that (should be) relatively easy to fix. As far as the resolution/fps.. its an xbox one game. As in, 2013 VCR Xbox One.
Hopefully in the near future they'll gain the resources to give it a Series X optimization, but i read before the game launched that they didn't have a dev kit. They have been pretty up front about that, but i will admit their PR department needs a lesson in bedside manner. It would go a long way.
That being said, i knew nothing about this game prior to seeing it in the MS store. So i did research. I bought the game knowing what i was getting into. Sometimes people just need to do their due diligence and make educated purchases (or know when to wait).
I just replayed Dungeon Siege 3 whenever I want a top down action game with loot. The ascent should be my new go to game for that genre but as good as it can be half of the game is backtracking and the loot is just annoying not exciting.
