You may have noticed recently that you received five free Super Wheelspins in Forza Horizon 5, and if you're not sure of the reason for the generous gift, it's because the game has been crowned IGN's Game of the Year 2021!
The game joined a long list of incredible nominees, and impressively managed to beat them all:
- Deathloop
- Forza Horizon 5
- Halo Infinite
- Hitman 3
- Inscryption
- It Takes Two
- Metroid Dread
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Returnal
In the video you see above, Playground Games had the following to say about winning the award:
"Thank you so much, this absolutely means the world to us. Congratulations to everyone on the Playground [Games] team. This team has poured so much into this game over the last three years."
Better yet, FH5 also won Best Console Exclusive, Best Racing Game, and Noteworthy Achievement in Accessibility!
Do you agree with the choice of Forza Horizon 5 for GOTY? Let us know down in the comments below.

Great to see FH5 get the recognition it deserves. Even if it's from IGN...
Finally, it gets the award it deserved! Racing games don't get any better than this (once you turn off some voice acting LOL).
Thank you superstar!! Papa Fernando is mucho proud
Well deserved, so pleased for Play ground games for giving so much dedication and joy to the Forza horizon games.
Now if they pull off Fable, they surely will be Microsoft’s best Studio and prove they are not a one trick pony.
@BlueOcean
Yup, a video game is a video game. Genre shouldn't matter, if a game excels like Forza Horizon 5 it should be up for the Game of the Year award.
@Gamer83 Exactly, we're finally getting rid of it has to be indie and weird or linear and cinematic to be awarded.
Still playing this wonderful gem on my series s. My favorite game since I bought this console!
Great game and visually stunning. Although an amazing game it's not my personal GOTY. Really pleased it's getting awards though.
Can't wait to see what they do with the expansions, PG always go to town with the horizon add ons.
It’s a really good game. Not my GOTY, but deserves several awards. Looking forward to see what this talented studio can do with Fable!
FH5 is something I truly wanted to experience with friends, and I anticipated it so long... to find out it was riddled with online connection issues. It kind of lost the momentum, and FH5 isn't the online games with friends it should have been.
Still had three full days of fun with it though.
100 hours in, still having a blast! Head and shoulders above anything else released this year, we'll deservrd
But why? It's almost exactly like Horizon 4 and brings nothing new to the table. It's an alright game, but nowhere near GOTY. But it's IGN after all, no clue whatsoever about games.
Fantastic game, ... Customisation is what makes a game for me regardless of the genre. FH5 delivers on many levels except (I stress personally) when creating custom routes (where I spend most of my time) there are many unresolved issues, obsticals vanishing after confirmed test run, inability to select more than 3 laps when the counter goes much higher, when reaching 80% obstical usage, rewinding causes crashes, course map not spawning and car freezes when driving over the unloaded map etc....
Don't get me wrong, it won't stop me buying another one but it's frustrating to say the least when you've spent 2 hours creating a route and it just crashes or does not load correctly. 😶 love you turn 10 please don't ban me.
Not my GOTY but its a worthy winner and one of the best games this year.
@Apkorv So what if its "doing nothing new" its a racing game set in the open world so other then a new world and some new cars it never need to do any drastic changes.
Wow, a racing game winning a GOTY isn't something I ever thought I'd see! Finally an award not going to one of a few narrow genres as the preordained "best genres" of games.
Fantastic game, so addictive, so much to do, I ended up buying the premium add-ons bundle and I'm ready for those expansions. Not sure what they'll do this time. They usually do a weather based pack, but the main game already has sandstorms and hurricanes, and then they usually do something crazy, but after Hot Wheels and Lego, what's left?
There's still those few speed zones that even my fastest cars so far aren't coming close..... there's more to find I think!
Deserved. It is more of the same but its still a bloody good same! The return of more of a story over the 'videogame map' of FH4 was most refreshing. My only real concern is the seasons don't really add anything to the game compared to 4.
However FH5 does ultimately feel tiresome by the end and it is probably the 4th best in the series. Whatever form 6 takes needs a rebuild from the ground up.
@NEStalgia The best expansion I can think of is a kart racer expansion with items, karts, grand prix and Microsoft characters. That would be so awesome.
@BlueOcean Certainly can't refute the business sense of that, though that sounds like a F2P cash cow more than an FH expansion.
An FH expansion needs to do something with the open world. But they've set the bar so high with the last to expansions that I wouldn't doubt this time it'll end up seeming disappointing in comparison to the past 2 expansions.
Great game, I'm having a blast playing it.
