Four years ago today, The Evil Within 2 launched onto Xbox. Tomorrow, it will mark seven years since the first game graced our consoles. It's become something of a cult hit series, with many more Xbox owners discovering the franchise since both joined Xbox Game Pass earlier this year. As expected, Bethesda has celebrated the series' anniversary on social media with some gorgeous artwork.
Showcasing the game's protagonist Sebastian Castellanos, the stunning image gifts an anime style to the series, and one we would love to have displayed in our office. Unfortunately, blowing it up on some A3 sized paper is as far as we'll probably get.
Understandably, the comments are calling for a third game in the franchise, which isn't surprising at all. For those who haven't dived into either of The Evil Within games, they're an absolute horror fueled treat - especially the sequel, which incorporates some open-world elements.
Currently, the team at Tango Gameworks are working on the upcoming PlayStation timed exclusive Ghostwire: Tokyo, but during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show stream, studio founder Shinji Mikami revealed another title is in the works, helmed by The Evil Within 2 director John Johanas.
This gives us hope that a third title is on the way. If not, then the sequel ended on an extremely high note and we'd be happy to cherish the adventures with Sebastian we do have. If you haven't checked either out, Xbox Game Pass is definitely your friend right now.

I loved the first game but never played the second.
I'll remedy that one day I'm sure.
I finished the first The Evil Within a couple of days ago and it's become my favourite horror game of all time. I'm currently playing through the DLCs now before putting away this game and they're great as well. I'm very excited to play the sequel down the line.
Microsoft acquiring this IP is seriously a huge win for Xbox owners. Having a phenomenal horror franchise like this exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem is incredible.
Evil Within 2 had probably one of the coolest looking final bosses in recent memory.
How is this series seven years old already? .
I feel like I need to go back and try the first one again, I bought it at launch and hated it, but I see so much praise for it that I feel like I missed something.
Evil Within was meant to be a trilogy, Bethesda were trying to take on RE1-3. The third needs to come out
I recently purchased the first one on the Windows Store. I should really get on that one soon then.
@Odium You definitely have to be in the right mood for it. There are so many things that can make it a sour experience: it can be very challenging, it's a very long game (around 20 hours long), the boss fights and certain segments can be frustrating as you can die in one hit during these moments and so on. Taking your time with the game is very important so that you can gather as many resources as possible. Not to mention embracing that it's a slow-paced game so that you don't get impatient trying to reach the end.
If you manage to find yourself in the right mood, then you'll have one of the best survival horror experiences ever. There's so much high quality content here, the gameplay loop is so in-depth and the environment variety is genuinely impressive. Every possible environment that you can imagine in a horror game is here. I'm still amazed at how much great content they put in this game.
@Odium that's how I felt about the second one. I probably wasn't in the right mood, as @LtSarge put it. I enjoyed the first, but I'm not mad about it.
@LtSarge I have a bit of a back log (like most gamers), but I think you’ve convince me to give it another shot. I loved the environments and enemy designs, but for some reason the rest just didn’t resonate with me. Like you and @Magabro said, I may not have been in the right mind set for it at the time. Worst case scenario, I’ve lost several hours to a game that isn’t for me, best case scenario I’m thrilled that my original feelings towards it were wrong. Thanks for the feedback!
I liked the first one a lot although the camera is rough and this is a problem in some boss battles. It's too gore for my taste but it's a very good game, especially the way things connect and how rewarding it's to unlock sparse upgrades. The mirrors, the lockers, the way you can manually save... Everything is designed wonderfully so you feel immersed in the game all the time. The DLC is awesome.
The second game is not as scary but it's a satisfying and enjoyable game from start to end. Both games are great for different reasons and perhaps the only thing that the sequel needs is Shinji Mikami.
I am going to play both games again soon so yeah, I want a third one!
EDIT:
"Studio founder Shinji Mikami revealed another title is in the works, helmed by The Evil Within 2 director John Johanas".
What do you mean? Make the new game, Shinji!
The Evil Within 2 had a great semi open world. I loved how there were so many unique and cool moments that were totally optional, but definitely worth discovering. I may need to go back and play that game due to it being spooky season and all.
@LtSarge It's only a win if they actually make a third one! Hopefully it's not another IP that MS just lets collect dust for a thousand years...
Removed - spoilers
Really enjoyed the first game was abit disappointed with the second because I preferred the more linear levels in the first & it didn't feel as scary
Evil within 2 is one of the most overlooked and unrated games ever its an excellent game.
unfortunately Evil within 2 didnt sell very well so doubt we will ever see a 3rd game
Evil Within 2 is superb and I suggest any horror fans check it out on Game Pass.
Hopefully with MS's backing and Game Pass taking the pressure off actual game sales, Xbox can greenlight #3 to finish off the trilogy.
@stinkyx Oh for sure, but I don't think Microsoft wouldn't want Tango to make a third game. This is an established franchise and Microsoft is going to need to rely on these in the near future in order to attract a lot of consumers for Game Pass. So when people hear that a third game is coming out and the first two are available on GP, it's going to garner a lot of attention for the service.
Best horror games out there since resident evil. Loved 1 and 2 is just mind blowing, playing them just now as we speak )) AWESOMENESS!!!
