The first reviews for this week's highly anticipated release of Cyberpunk 2077 have gone live today, and as expected, they're looking (mostly) very positive! Let's see what some reviewers are saying about the game so far...
Video Games Chronicle (5/5)
"An immersive and stunningly crafted RPG, which has raised the bar for cinematic quality in open-world games. Just be aware of the bug issues at release."
VG247 (5/5)
"The final experience might be more familiar than many predicted, with plenty of elements that aren’t perfect, but it’s dripping with detail and engaging stories. With so much to see and do, Cyberpunk 2077 is the kind of RPG where you blink and hours go by, which is just what we need to finish off 2020."
Windows Central (5/5)
"Cyberpunk 2077 is an industry highpoint that, simply put, may never be bested. Right now, and without hesitation, I am overjoyed to say Cyberpunk 2077 is everything I've ever wanted from a game. It is the best game I have ever played."
IGN (9/10)
"Cyberpunk 2077 throws you into a beautiful, dense cityscape and offers a staggering amount of flexibility in how you choose to take it from there."
Trusted Reviews (4/5)
"CD Projekt Red has created a triumphant RPG experience with Cyberpunk 2077, yet it often falters under the weight of its own ambition thanks to inconsistent writing and narrative."
GameSpot (7/10)
"The side quests and the characters they showcase are the shining beacon through the neon-soaked bleakness of Night City, and they give you room to explore the best the core RPG mechanics have to offer. These are what carried me through an otherwise disappointing experience."
Polygon (No Score)
"On one hand, it’s a more earnest and sincere game than all its edgy marketing has suggested. On the other, though the word cyberpunk evokes a radical vision of the future, there’s nothing revolutionary on offer here. Instead, it’s a game obsessed with the past."
Cyberpunk 2077 currently has an OpenCritic 'Top Critic' rating of 91 based on 36 reviews. The game will be available this Thursday, December 10th for Xbox One, with a Series X optimisation patch to follow later on.

Sounds promising! I look forward to playing it
GameSpot always rates low.
Knew who the Gamespot reviewer was as soon as I saw the score 😂
@Jarobusa
You mean 8spot. As for the game, it just might not be breathtaking. I'll still play it and see for myself.
My copies just been sent (£44.85 from base.com). That's £5 cheaper than Amazon. Looking forward to it on Xbox.
@roe Consistency is a good thing in a reviewer!
8post, thats describes them perfectly. I have it pre-ordered and not waiting for 'enhancements'.
Gamespot is a joke..
With every single review mentioning bugs I think I’ll push this till there’s a next gen patch and hopefully they’ll be fixed by then
Thanks for the roundup. A couple other reviews I've read are less complimentary. Bugs seem to be the main issue. Some hoped for less repetition of NPC models, though I bet that becomes more noticeable the more immersive a setting.
In every case, the reviewers aren't playing slow and focused on exploration like I will play it. They rushed through the main storyline to get a review out as quickly as possible. Imagine being tasked to review Skyrim or The Witcher 3 in only a week. Early reviews are useful, even so.
If it was anyone but gamespot I would say fair enough... But this is just cliche typical gamespot.. They go out there way to put there scores away from the majority... They will no doubt give some average game that's getting 7 everywhere a 10 next week
They are so hip and trendy rollseyes
To be fair, it's just not GameSpot giving a slightly lower score (we just picked them for the roundup) - VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb also gave the game a 3/5.

@FraserG Indeed. There's a lot of shady practices going on here like
In the race for posting reviews/clicks I take my hat off to reviewers like SkillUp who refuse to kowtow to CDPR's unethical embargo demands.

Yeah I don't really trust most critics and gaming sites these days, sites like Purexbox is one of the rare good ones. I usually go off Steam reviews and the Xbox store reviews as the best indicator of quality. As for me I already got the game pre-ordered and I'll be my own judge. I know politics heavily influences a lot of gaming critics these days and they lost their credibility with me for that.
I expected it to be buggy and I wish people would stop letting hype make them deny the fact that CD Projekt Red is not showing the base Xbox One performance. We slam Ubisoft for doing it, just cause CDPR makes better games doesn't give them a pass for the same tactic. I still might buy this day 1 but I have my expectations lower than the hype train. It's still good I'm sure, but Gamespot had good reasons to be less enthusiastic and they're not the only ones. In my opinion they should have delayed this till the next gen console patch was ready. Better for the devs who crunched, better for the players. Of course CDPR wanted that holiday money, but with COVID I'm not sure it would be as big a knock on their income.
I’m still not interested. I’m never excited about futuristic stuff
I’ve never been that hyped for Cyberpunk, if it was made by anyone but CD Project id probably have zero interest in it. I’m sure I’ll pick it up and some point and give it a go, after a good few patches that it needs.
I do question, how any game as buggy as this seems to be can score 10/10.
@Fenbops Honestly I just see that as a fault with the traditional approach to reviews in this day and age. We live in an era where games get heavily patched all the time, the experience of playing a game a month or two after launch can be completely different from playing it when it launched, and holding it to the way it was when it launched is irrelevant as nobody can play it in that state anymore.
The whole concept of being heavily critical over bugs and issues harks back to the old pre-online era when games couldn't be patched and the game you got on disc/cartridge was the only state you would ever play the game in. We really need to rethink how we score games in this day and age and be more open to how the experience will be when it's inevitably patched. Just make sure the problems aren't serious design issues really.
@BrilliantBill I'm sure it was, that whole site is oddly political for what is supposedly a gaming site. It generally comes off as the type of place I try to avoid that has got no credibility with me.
Oh and just a heads up Cyberpunk fans! The day one patch is apparently out now! I am downloading it right now, weighs in at 15.4 GB but it apparently doesn't change the file size.
@BrilliantBill This is why I tend to avoid Polygon. They are always political. The same goes for GameSpot, although some of their reviewers are more grounded and appreciate gaming for what it actually is. That said - although the reviewer made valid points and criticisms regarding Cyberpunk - she also stated in one of her cons that she was offended by some things in the game. This isn't the first time she put her political views (or life views, in general) to make a negative about a game. With that said, it's her opinion and her experience, so I can't necessarily fault her for being impacted in the way that she was. Nevertheless, I've always considered GameSpot "hipsters" who enjoy indies more than anything, while Polygon is the political bunch.
I think the fact all reviews have been the pc build are telling. Maybe the day one patch will make the console versions more playable than they currently are. The really slow driving on the One X footage was especially telling of the state the game appears to be in currently. Could still be a great game though, it just seems like there are lots of issues still, despite the delays.
@JayJ you’re so right about politics influencing gaming critics. Sites like polygon and eurogamer have lost all credibility to me after reading some of the reviews they’ve put out. I tend to stick to just a couple of youtubers now, ACG and Skill Up in particular who leave that stuff at the door and just talk about the graphics, gameplay and how fun it is.
You’re also correct the way games are scored needs to change. Is a game where it’s probably best waiting 6 - 12 months to play at its best after multiple patches really a 10/10, i don’t think so.
Thankfully, I'm not getting the game until Christmas.
Hopefully by that point, the game has been patched a few more times.
Very damning when reviewers are only provided with PC code, and even then, they can't show that footage, as apparently it's very buggy.
I'll be playing on Series X, but I pity anyone going to play this on Xbox One S or PS4 base consoles. Got a feeling it will run like crap on those.
