Update (Thu 24th Dec, 2020 14:00 GMT): Double Fine has now shared more details on the current state of Psychonauts 2 via a 'Holiday Update 2020' video which you can watch above, showcasing plenty of work-in-progress footage of the game, which according to Tim Schafer is now fully playable from start to finish!
Original story (Wed 23rd Dec, 2020 18:00 GMT): Among the first-party games heading to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One next year is Double Fine's Psychonauts 2, which was unfortunately delayed to 2021 back in July from its original 2020 release window.
However, in a new IGN interview, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer confirmed that the team is "pretty much closing in on finishing the game", suggesting it'll be with us in the relatively near future.
"We mostly have everything now in the game, like if you've worked in game development, the fact that I can say that we're starting to work on the end credits kind of shows you where we're at. At least for us.
By the time we're working on the end credits, we're pretty much closing in on finishing the game."
Schafer went on to explain that the studio is now in the process of polishing the title, but understandably refrained from giving an exact date, or even a release window of when we can expect the game to drop.
The most recent gameplay footage we've seen of Psychonauts 2 arrived back in August courtesy of Hollywood star Jack Black, and it looked to be in great shape even back then. We're definitely excited for this one!

I’ve never got into Double Fine’s games before. But I am excited to give them a shot on Game Pass & a first party studio.
Too bad that I won't be able to see the game under my tree, but nevertheless, I definitely am excited for this game.
@KelticDevil they are a unique taste. I’ll say that Costume Quest is a must play for me every Halloween. And Psychonauts one was a ton of fun. I’m really excited for this one. But I’ll admit they are a very unique taste. The perks of gamepass is you can always try it out and see.
Never played the first one but I'm having a blast in Brutal Legend so sign me up for this one.

I agree about Game Pass, which Double Fine is perfect for. And thanks for the tips! 👍🏻
Very excited about this one! Still have my physical copy of the original. Possibly my most anticipated game of 2021
I am the Milkman. My milk is delicious.
Very interested in this game, Never played the first one but the the sequel looks really good..
Given Microsoft aren't usually the type to reveal an unnanounced game out of nowhere to release soon after, I'd guess this fills the gap before Flight Sim.
Can't wait to play this game. Of course, I still need to beat the first one. I've played it once but got stuck a little while into the story. I should be able to work through it this go around.
Personally, not a game I would buy, but with the luxury of Game Pass, I'll be giving this a shot.
Hopefully it's been X/S enhanced as well due to the delay.

I remember the original had a few points in the beginning that you could get stuck. Totally worth using a guide to see all the levels. They are so creative and have different gameplay styles towards the end of the game that are a lot of fun. Such great character interactions and I love getting to literally explore their minds and find their “emotional baggage”.
@Nermannn I may end up using a guide on my second attempt if I really feel like I'm stumped.
