It's time for another round of Pick One! Today, following the official announcement that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is on the way in Spring 2021, we thought we'd look back at the series' history on Xbox.
There have been four games released on the platform since the arrival of the first Mass Effect in 2007, culminating in the controversial Mass Effect: Andromeda which released in 2017. Which is your favourite?
Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
Mass Effect (2007)
You are Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy, an elite agent in humanity’s Systems Alliance Military. Explore the galaxy with your hand picked squad of combat, tech and biotic specialists as you race against time to stop a madman bent on galactic destruction.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Across the galaxy, entire human colonies are vanishing. As Commander Shepard, you will recruit anelite team of the galaxy’s most dangerous and skilled experts, and lead them on an assault into themost dangerous area of the galaxy - from which you might not return.
Mass Effect 3 (2012)
Earth is burning. The Reapers have taken over and other civilizations are falling like dominoes. Lead the final fight to save humanity and take back Earth from these terrifying machines, Commander Shepard.
Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)
Mass Effect: Andromeda travels deep into the Andromeda Galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, you will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory where we are the aliens. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and your choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda Galaxy.
Let us know which of these Mass Effect games is your favourite below.

2. Not only the best mass effect game, one of the best games ever made imo.
I haven't played any but did download these awhile back along with the Dead Space and Crysis games when I got my EA subscription. One day I will finally get to them, one day..
Played all 4, all good in their own way but the WE are the aliens thing was pretty neat. Not a new idea (few are!) but a good take on it that felt realistic. Not that I'd know from experience lol
Probably in the minority here but Mass Effect 3 was imo much better than Mass Effect 2. It had a better story and more exciting moments, definitely enjoyed it more.
I liked them all - inc Andromeda (better combat and some great environments) and beat everyone to 100% but 2 was definitely the best of the franchise. I know a lot went on about the ending to 3, but 95% of the game was probably better than 2 and the last bit almost felt 'rushed', that they reached a point and didn't quite know what to do, how to end so just rushed something.
If it hadn't ended as it did, it would easily be the best, but 2 just pipped it for me...
Overall, though, the entire trilogy is well worth playing and its an instant buy. Only question will be 'when' as I don't think its getting a Series X patch at launch and I don't want to be tempted to start on BC...
Never played Mass Effect before so i'm looking forward to this collection..
ME2. Literally the easiest opinion survey I’ve ever answered. Favorite game of all time. I really liked 3 as well, but the ending did indeed suck. Also, the fetch quests were weird. You eavesdrop on conversations, then go find a heirloom for them. “Hey, I overheard you talking about your family’s sacred heirloom. I came across it in the Horse Head nebula. Here you go.” Garrus and Shep on top of Citadel is one of the all time great scenes. Mordin death was also fantastic (unlike Shep’s).
2 easily! Amazing game. Number 1 is very close with its more RPG vibe.
As someone that came from the KOTOR games, I preferred the RPG aspect of the Bioware games. ME 2 & 3 were just far too shallow in the RPG mechanics for me.
@FraserG Hi there fellow gamers.
Wow....... This is a though one.
All three games are awesome in their own right.....
I´m gonna cheat and say all three of them.
Never have I experienced a gaming saga quite like this one.
MGS(1-4) and ME trilogy will always be my number one favourite sagas of all time.
But if I really have to pick just one, I have to pick the first.
Nothing is going to beat getting my limited edtion Xbox 360 version from my local store with some friends and watching that sweet intro into the ME universe with the iconic score in the background....... Really good and fond memories from this article.
Thank you Fraser for reminding me of this.
Cheers, stay safe out there people and happy gaming to us all
Played, and loved, the first one far too much so it just about beats ME2 for me. Both great games.
I absolutely loved ME. I know ME2 improved on it, but the first game is still my favourite. I can not comment on 3 and Andromeda since I didn't played them.
I think the first one personally. The second is great but it didn’t quite have the same element of magic as the first. 3 is great until the end and Andromeda’s better not talked about!
Mass Effect 2 was the best campaign. But Mass Effect 3 had that awesome co-op multiplayer mode. They were all fun.
ME2 was easily the best game in the series. The first game was great but a bit rough around the edges, the second game just really improved everything and added somethings that I enjoyed the most about it above all others like the galactic exploration. ME3 wasn't as good as that and Andromeda is not even in the same league as the original trilogy.
Never played this series, maybe next year.
@AJDarkstar
This. I remember playing the first ME. I didn't know what to expect and this made it so engrossing. 2 and 3 were third person shooters with some rpg elements. Still great games, though. My all time favourite games and I can't wait for the Legendary Edition! I don't suppose we can count on Dead Space receiving the same treatment with Visceral gone :/
Obviously, most people are going to pick ME2.
I have replayed & completed the original trilogy multiple times & am currently playing Andromeda. And I will still pick the original ME as my favorite.
Star Wars KOTOR is my favorite RPG of all time, so I prefer the original. ME2 dumbed down everything & turned it into a 3rd person shooter.
ME1 is a bit janky, but I loved exploring planets in the Mako, customizing weapons, the wider level design, the extensive playstyle differences caused by choosing different classes, etc. It's the only one that felt like an RPG to me. They'd better not turn it into a corridor shooter to fit with the other games in the trilogy.
@AJDarkstar
Do try Dead Space. The first one is a masterpiece in my book. Part 2 is ok, but Part 3 is lame. At least in my opinion.
The first is a great game, but I voted 2.
The first will always be my fave.
The sequels are incredible of course but the original can never beaten 😁
I think I have more nostalgia for 1, but 2 was just absolutely incredible.
2 was genre-defining for me. Loved the first one but 2 absolutely blew me away at the time and no other game came close. Like any great sci-fi series #2 was the gritty, intensified sequel that was almost impossible to follow. Can't wait to play that one again in particular.
Mass Effect 1, no question for me, although I admit it's game mechanics are quite dated in places now. Not very often a new game hits me with such atmosphere and storytelling that I'm sucked into its world so deep. That ability to go anywhere in my ship and land on alien worlds and explore on foot if I wanted to, all the strange lore for certain planets in the codex, being made a spectre, the reveal of the 'reaper', the showdown with wrex and so many other awesome character moments and interactions.
I for one always get Anderson to punch Udina.
I loved ME2 almost as much, it's even better on the character interactions and world building, but just felt it lost too much of its rpg mechanics and the overall story vs collectors was not as good as hunting down and stopping saren and sovereign. That said, the suicide mission may be one of, if not the greatest mission and gaming moments ever. (imho)
