There have been well over 5000 (!) Xbox games released over the past twenty years, spanning three generations of consoles beginning with the launch of the original Xbox back in late 2001.
It's inevitable, then, that some of those games were always destined to go under the radar, and the sad truth is that some of them were really good, but just never caught on for whatever reason.
There are plenty of examples of these spread across the Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but which do you think is the most underrated to date? Give us your picks and tell us why in the comments below!

Ryse: Son of Rome is the first game that comes to mind with something like this, but I know it's brought up a lot.
The original Titanfall, too. The second game gets so much praise, but the first one was such a breath of fresh air at the time and so important to the early days of the Xbox One.
Screamride.
Say no more.
I always liked Far Cry Primal, but looking around I felt very alone playing it.
I'd have to go with Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, and Killer Instinct
Definitely Sunset Overdrive. the problem is, it was underrated BY Microsoft. it should have been a big franchise, and they probably should have been the ones to buy Insomniac....
@FraserG Yeah good call with Ryse. I remember having a blast playing that game, it had a great campaign and the colosseum mode was a ton of fun. Very underrated, easily my favorite Roman game.
While Sunset Overdrive is an underrated game that deserved more love, it's far from the most underrated Xbox game.
I'd have to say that that spot has to go to an original Xbox game like Jade Empire or maybe even Lost Odyssey on Xbox 360. Excellent games that barely anyone has heard of or played.
No love for Quantum Break?
I feel like everybody loves Sunset Overdrive at this point. Then again, doesn't Sony own that now? So if there's ever a sequel it would be on PS.
I agree with @LtSarge Jade Empire is the single best Bioware game, ever, hands down, and one of the very best RPGs ever, hands down. The X1X enhancements really make it better, but it's a shame just how dated it really looks and feels now. It's such an amazing game.
@SuperKMx I loved that wrecking ball mode in Screamride.
If we are just talking about the Xbox One, I will have to go with Ryse: Son Of Rome & it’s not even close.
For Sparta!!!! ⚔️
Sunset od got good reviews but I still think it's vastly underrated, so many people I see who actually played the full game put it in there top 3 or 5 games all gen, me included, I never even planned to get it but it came with my xbox and such a great game, I never usually buy dlc but I did with sunset I enjoyed it that much
The two I would have to pick is Morrowind or jade empire. Jade empire was short for an rpg but it was a lot of fun. The reason I say Morrowind is I didn't even know what I was getting the guy at babages suggested it and it was a great experience that really launched a franchise on consoles I bought an xbox 360 to play oblivion and so on.
Is Sunset OD multiplayer or does it have a solo campaign? I can't wait to try Ryse on my XSX
@Krzzystuff Both, multiplayer probably dead though, campaign is great
I feel Gears Of War Ultimate Edition doesn't get enough love..
I know Ori gets praised, but it’s still underrated. It should be in game of the year conversations a lot more than it is. Has the same type of emotional impact as a game like Journey, but is fun to play.
Too Human imo
K-K-K-Killlllerrrrr !!!
And Sunset Overdrive ofcourse.
I'd have to go with Halo 5. Sure the campaign is bad but the multiplayer is the best in the franchise. It's also the only Halo game that hasn't been given a second life.
Lovers in a dangerous spacetime
Mad max
The godfather
Zombie army
Max Payne 3
Fight Night round 3
Good question! Ones that come to mind from original Xbox are Gun, Armed & Dangerous, Sudeki, and The Punisher.
Since then, on 360, probably Warhammer: Space Marine, Prey, King Kong, Alpha Protocol, Dante’s Inferno, The Saboteur, Spec Ops, and Divinity II spring to mind.
On the One, maybe Plague Tale, Mad Max, Shadows: Awakening, Greedfall, Evil Within, or Bulletstorm...
@jongred Good call with The Godfather - totally forgot about it but it was a really fun game!
Spec ops the line
@MarkD01 yes It was great. Like playing the movie. They really nailed the feel and managed to make it a very playable and fun game aswell.
@MarkD01 The Saboteur!! You never hear anyone talk about it. It was one of the best "Ubisoft style" open world games last gen. The whole B&W to color mechanic made it really unique and memorable. It's the best done "WW2" game I've seen. Maybe the open world is a dated mechanic today, but nothing had the "feel" of the romantic view of the WW2 era quite like that (if that's an appropriate way of wording it.)
@NEStalgia It was great, right?! Well, apart from the dodgy Oirish accent... Still hopeful of a redux one day, just like Kingdoms of Amalur finally received (which would have been on the list if this years ReAwakening had not happened).
I'm looking forward to sunset OD on my series X on my new 4k TV... I've hated 2020 but it does have some good moments.
ReCore was one great game but was not well received. I don't know why.
I think Murdered: Soul Suspect is pretty under rated because it’s got a pretty good story to it.
I thought Alan Wake was really under rated until Quantum Break, that was my favourite game on 360 and still is.
Jet Set Radio Future! Such unified visual and sound design. Would love to see this added to backwards compatibility. I’ve also heard outrun 2 is great, so I hope that one gets added too.
Gotta give it to Lost Odyssey!
Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga
Xbox 360 game!
remake could eat it up!
Ryse: Son of Rome. Loved it, wish we could see a sequel
Ryse and sunset od, they should have made follow ups to those games and pushed the ip, maybe even a series x release title for one of them on their second or third outing.
I’m hoping with all their studios next generation will bring some massive AAA games both new ip and old favourites like fable.
Lost Odyssey. What a brilliant fluffing game, & it definitely is not brought up enough.
Kinect sports
Stranded Deep. That game sucked me in for months.
@XBontendo Lost Odyssey is amazing and still available to purchase on the xbox store.
The free-to-play multiplatform game Warframe. I can recommend it to everyone. The combination of shooter and hack-and-slash ninja action is soooo fluent and satisfying!
I've tried it two years ago - it was decent. I tried it last month, and it's developed fantastic.
Crackdown 3.
I love it! Although I know a lot of players dissagree.
Returning to Xbox after 15 years, I've a lot of catching up to do.
No love for Stubbs the Zombie? That was hands down one of my favorite games back on the OG Xbox.
Quake 4
