It was back in late September that Microsoft released a new Xbox mobile app for Android users, and following a brief testing period, that same app is also now available for Apple users on iOS.
The app introduces a ton of new and improved features, including streamlined notifications for parties, chats and new friends, party chat on the go, the ability to share screenshots and clips from your phone to social media and via messages, an option to download games before you buy them, and more.
But most interestingly, it also incorporates Remote Play, allowing you to stream your console to your iPhone or iPad and play your Xbox games portably. Microsoft has struggled so far to bring its Project xCloud service to iOS with Xbox Game Pass, but based on our experiences with Remote Play so far, this is definitely the next best thing.
You can download the app right now from the links below:
Have you tried Xbox Remote Play yet? How are you finding it? Let us know below.

Please bring remote play on MacOS too as iOS apps are now natively ported to MacOS.
I downloaded the app and was playing Doom Eternal and Forza Horizon 4 on my iPhone via the XBOX ONE X.
It’s awesome it works and very smoothly! Downside is going from playing on a 55inch 4K TV to a 6inch iPhone just doesn’t give a great experience. No fault of the service, just my own personal comments.
Hurrah! Great, great news.
Can you use official xbox controllers for this right? As if I’m controlling the xbox not the phone? Not sure if that is a silly question.
@K1LLEGAL You can pair your Xbox controller via Bluetooth to your phone/tablet, yeah.
@FraserG thanks. I actually just tried it. It popped up at the beginning saying you should be using a bluetooth controller but let me continue with the xbox controller. But it was connected to the xbox and not paired with my phone.
Worked well! Apart from when it stopped working on Gears but still controlled the dashboard, which was wierd.
Not sure how to pair the xbox controller with my iPhone but I will google that.
This is great for those that will use it. I hate playing games on my cell phone though.
Yehsit's great, I have been using my iPad Pro to stream my PS4 Pro for some time, great when the demand for the TV is high and normally best used for those games where your grinding side quests or whatever and the cinematic experience is less important, D3 Seasons or 70% of Assassin's Creed content for example
Look forward to doing the same on Series X.
This is great! However, I’ve had more stable connection playing (w/ on-screen controls) on my phone on the subway to work with OneCast (with which I’ve had this functionality for at least two years? Three? Can’t remember). I’ve used it most extensively on Mac and iPad (w/ eth/wifi), iPhone (4G) feels a bit gimmicky. Nowadays I keep my Xbox by my home office 24”, so I mostly fire up OneCast on my Apple TV for the kids… they don’t mind the extra 1–2ms lag. Xbox.app feels a bit rough around the edges, but there’s other improvements as well (like full side-swipe, instead of overextending for the top arrow to go back) so I have high hopes! I don’t think the likes of Warzone or similar high octane gaming will ever work good enough streaming, but I’ve managed plenty of velociraptor breakouts just fine. For now, I’ll stick to OneCast.
