We've known about Rocket League's plans to go free-to-play for a while, but now developer Psyonix has confirmed the game will transition to a "free" experience next week on Wednesday, September 23rd.
As part of this, the developer will be introducing lots of new features to the game including revamped tournaments with automatically scheduled Competitive Tournaments every day, game-wide challenges offering items and XP, cross-platform progression, and streamlined Seasons and new Ranks.
And of course, this also means that Rocket League will be leaving Xbox Game Pass imminently.
Something to keep in mind however, is that you'll still require Xbox Live Gold in order to access Rocket League's online features when it goes free-to-play, as recently highlighted on the game's official website.
Will you be checking out Rocket League when it goes free-to-play? Let us know in the comments.

So my copy I have via Game Pass will just turned into a "owned" game I guess??
@BANJO
I would assume so. That would be dumb for them to make you download it all over again.
"you'll still require Xbox Live Gold in order to access Rocket League's online features when it goes free-to-play"
THIS. IS. TOTAL. NONSENSE.
And I know this problem is not new. I had to pay a month of Xbox Live gold in order to play Phantasy Star Online 2, which is supposed to be... well... FREE to play. Except that it's not.
Even if the Xbox Live Gold stays, even if it's still something we have to pay, IT HAS TO, AT LEAST, FREE THOSE DAMN FREE-TO-PLAY GAMES.
Why can Sony do it, and not Microsoft ?
@Bobobiwan Well in Microsoft's defense, they are still giving you parties and such, but on the other hand, Rocket League is capable is doing those things all on their own, so I do think Rocket League should be free. Maybe if Epic changes it so it uses all their built-in features instead of parties and what not?
On the other hand, it might cut down on toxic Xbox Players just creating random accounts to ruin the game?
So I guess I'm impartial because I have Xbox Live Gold already and see it both ways.
@Bobobiwan
I do agree that Microsoft should take the Xbox Live restriction off of free to play games.
I would go one step further & say just get rid of paid online services altogether. PC gamers don’t have to pay extra $ to play online. Why should we?
I know there are rumors that Xbox may get rid of it at some point, but considering Sony & Nintendo just started it on the PS4 & Switch, I doubt Microsoft has a ton of incentive to do it themselves right now.
And why anyone would actually pay for the Switch online service.....lol.
