The Xbox Tokyo Game Show Showcase takes place later today at 8AM ET / 1PM BST, and ahead of the event, Microsoft has surprisingly revised the price of the Xbox Series S in the region.
On its official website, the company confirmed that the price had been reduced from 32,980 yen (excluding tax) to 29,980 yen (excluding tax), which represents the equivalent of a £23 / $29 discount.
The Xbox Series X remains at 49,980 yen (excluding tax), and both systems are set to be available for pre-order in Japan beginning tomorrow, September 25th. We're definitely interested to see those sales figures!
How well do you think the Xbox Series X|S will sell in Japan? Let us know your thoughts below.

Two words - xCloud, PC.
@Senua
True dat. With Japan's internet speeds, Microsoft's gonna knock it right out of the park over there.
@Senua
Exactly. I doubt MS will shift many consoles, but if they get the content, xCloud could be a huge hit for them.
I'm not sure Microsoft even have the games Japan wants these days, I seriously doubt the Series S and X is going to have any real success over there where Switch is hugely dominant
Series S being tiny has a chance in Japan and they love their phones so xCloud will be a success in Japan... and Asia.
@carlos82 They are pushing hard on the Japan scene with games and series like Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts all available on Game Pass.
Yakuza like a Dragon is also next-gen timed exclusive. I expect them to announce more like this at the Tokyo Game Show tonight. Plus Cloud gaming?
If all this doesn't work at cracking the Japanese market nothing will
@themightyant thats a lot of games they've already played though. I wish them luck as they're effectively starting from scratch when Switch sells more in a week then Xbox One has in 7 years, even PS4 sales have slowed to a crawl. I just don't see it taking off over there
@carlos82 I tend to agree it may not work, but hats off to them they are trying harder than they ever have.
Also remember the vast majority of players are not hardcore and
1) won't have played all those games
2) may appreciate the cheaper S console
3) may appreciate cloud gaming + game pass
It's a lot to offer the more casual gamer in Japan
@themightyant Agreed.
USA and Japan prices don't include taxes, UK and EU do.
@Medic_Alert Plus Japan has a history of cultural loyalty & pride, making it more difficult for foreign companies to reach the same level of success in the Japanese market
A lot of good points raised above. I just think it's a good move and hope it works out for them.
One of those studios they have is bound to be working on something for that market.
Money is a good motivator and the XSS is a great next gen machine, so good luck over there!
Phil drop some Info during Tokyo Game Show if I heard right, xCloud going to Japan early next year and Japan is the fast growing Market for “Xbox Services”.
So hopefully they get xCloud and Gamepass dialed in over there for it’s launch.
As for the Series s pricing if I recall the Yen conversion was wrong in the first place for it.
@carlos82 So far, seems their preorders have been a HUGE success. Sold out in one minute. They are doing something right.

@Tharsman Sounds like good news certainly, it would be good to know the actual allocation of units...
