We've been hearing for months about the existence of a second next-gen Xbox - the Xbox Lockhart / Xbox Series S - and now its name has almost certainly been leaked via packaging for the new Xbox controller.
In addition to the photos which first leaked above, Twitter user Zak S was able to find one of these controllers in the wild and posted an array of images online - including the side of the box which references the Xbox Series S console.
There's a lot of evidence to go on here, but just in case you're still sceptical - website The Verge has also reportedly confirmed that this controller is genuine, so it looks like Xbox Series S is indeed the official name.
The Xbox Series S is rumoured to be a cheaper, lower-spec alternative to the Xbox Series X, and it's been suggested that it will be revealed later this month. We've been hearing about it for a long time, but this is the first time we've seen it referenced on (seemingly) official Xbox packaging.
Excited for the Xbox Series S? What do you think of the controller? Let us know in the comments.

π± the d-pad. Is that good?
@sandman89 I don't like the look of that d-pad at all, but as with any leak, I'll wait for it to be official lol
@Jaxx420 The actual look of the controller was revealed by Microsoft some time ago - here's a look at it in more detail:

The XSS is the only console that has me at all interested in jumping to next gen. It just needs to be the right price.
@Richnj 299usd with a free month or two of game pass ultimate would be very tempting for a lot of people I think
@FraserG I am working too long and too hard and must have slipped under the rock a bit too much!
I may stick with the Elite controller.
So, basically nothing Earth-shattering on the news front, then. I think it's safe to say that most of us already expected for many months that the official name for Lockheart would be Series S.
So basically a digital only version like the ps5 has done, getting people ready for a digital only future
If they play their cards right it could be a compelling micro PC for a 1080p screen. But I wouldnβt want it hooked up to my main living room TV.
@playstation_king Itβs a 1080p console with same CPU and SSD as Series X.
@playstation_king While there's a chance it will be digital only, the specs point to a lower end budget machine, rather than the lazy and pointless route Sony took.
I mean, I've been almost completely digital for around a decade, and I still saw the XB1S all digital as a pointless device.
@Richnj if you are right and it is a lower end budget machine then is it truly next gen? Compared to the X?
@Z3u5000 but the X would be a 1080p console if you haven't got a 4k tv which majority of people don't
@playstation_king It will play all next gen xbox series games, so yeah.
And the XSX has power to support 4k, but if you only have 1080p why not offer cheaper hardware that is dedicated to 1080p? It makes sense to not force gamers to pay for hardware above what they need. So for 1080p gamers, and kids, a high end 4k Β£400+ console is not fit for purpose.
The leak is more important that some people say. This reminds me of the comments, "Xbox Games Show was underwhelming because we already knew that Fable existed" because someone said it existed. The same stupid thing would have been said if Perfect Dark was announced instead and the same stupid thing will be said when Microsoft finally announces Perfect Dark.
Firstly, we didn't know if Lockhart was a console, it could have been anything else, e.g., an xCloud kit. Secondly, we didn't know for sure if Series S was the name of the hypothetical console. Finally, the colour has been confirmed to be white. All of this has been confirmed today by this real leak.
I like that the packaging states "Series X/S". I would love game boxes to show the same instead of "Xbox Series X/Xbox Series S...". I also like the name and colour because Xbox One S was quite popular and people will recognise the successor easily. Will Xbox One S be discontinued when this is released? It makes sense to me.
Confirming what we mostly all thought, it's still great to see it in the photo's however... I wonder what Microsoft's response will be to this..
@BANJO They'll probably announce it soon. The question is will they reveal the price of Series X and S first and let Sony "win" the chicken game? That could be dangerous and allow Sony to undercut Microsoft.
@BlueOcean Yes, regarding price they both are awaiting and seemingly hoping the other jumps first...
They could have a presentation for the Series S and not announce the price, saying the price will be confirmed shortly or just say it will be competitively priced as an entry point into "Next Gen" with exact details tbc nearer release...
One things for sure, time is running out and someone has to jump first..
@BlueOcean The fact that Sony have a high end system, and a high end system missing a disc drive leaves me to believe that they couldn't possibly compete with MS' strategy of having a high end and lower end system.
Sony could certainly undercut the XSX, but trying to undercut a lower end budget system would be a major loss per console.
And this is why I've been saying MS should launch the XSS at $250 or $300 max. It's a price point Sony just couldn't drop to. If MS were brave enough to take an even bigger loss on the XSS, the momentum would pay off in the long run.
Microsoft just needs to officially reveal this thing soon.
@Richnj I think that PS5 will cost 500* and PS 5AD 400, so Series X should be 400 and Series S should be between 200 and 300 depending on features (disc drive, etc.). They could release Series S for 300 and Series S All-Digital Edition for 200.
*dollars without taxes / euros with taxes
@BANJO "They could have a presentation for the Series S and not announce the price, saying the price will be confirmed shortly or just say it will be competitively priced as an entry point into "Next Gen" with exact details tbc nearer release..."
I'd do that if I were Microsoft because they have already revealed console and specifications first, let Sony say a price now π.
I wonder when they'll officially reveal this thing. Has to be fairly soon, like Jeff Grubb is claiming.
Nice looking controller, I still prefer the black one.. Looks like Xbox Series S is the official name so i can't wait for them to reveal it this month..
Iβm still skeptical about it being called βSeries Sβ because people believed Xbox One was to be called βXbox 720β up until officially announced. Personally I think it will be an all digital version of the series X and the slim will come in a year or two
"Xbox Series" is still a pretty weird core name for a console generation.
@Jaxx420 its the same dpad as the elite controllers just not removeable from what ive read....with that said its so much better then the stock og dpad i cant explain why it feels better it just does...
@Blessed_Koz It looks like an evolution of the Mega Drive D-pad, too. I really can't wait to try it.
@Medic_Alert Right, the consoles are named "Xbox" and the models "Series...".
Sorry guys your reading it wrong, its clearly says πππ¨π± "πππ«π’ππ¬ π" | "π" We already know this. MS has stopped making the One X but will keep selling the "S" as its entry level machine for now.
Robot White. Just like the PS5 controller, but with the sticks in the right place.
