Update (Mon 3rd Aug, 2020 18:05 BST): What a mess! After UK retailer Base suggested earlier today that this leak was "not correct" to IGN, Sony has now confirmed that Spider-Man will indeed be exclusive to the PlayStation versions of Marvel's Avengers, and will be added to the game in early 2021. Sorry, Xbox fans!
Original story (Sat 1st Aug, 2020 14:00 BST): There's been some speculation recently that Spider-Man might make an appearance in the upcoming Marvel's Avengers, and according to a leak he will be playable - but only in the PS4 version.
This is coming from the UK retailer Base (spotted by the folks over at Reddit), which seemingly for months has been listing the game for PlayStation along with the phrase, "play as Spider-Man exclusively on PS4."
This reference has since been removed over the past few hours, but nevertheless it looks like there's a very good chance it's true - the game was revealed to be getting "future surprises" for PlayStation players back at its unveiling at E3 2019, so this might be one battle Xbox loses out on - at least for now.
How do you feel about Spider-Man being exclusive to Marvel's Avengers on PS4? Let us know below.

Too bad the game itself looks a bit rubbish. Missed opportunity imo.
Whilst this specifically doesn't bother me, I'm just not feeling this game, but it bothers me that sony is able to secure all these third party exclusivities recently.
The Bethesda PS5 exclusives (Deathloop seems to be a true exclusive) have me worried, they aren't usually ones for letting money limit who gets games, its usually the hardware or companies policies (modding) that make things exclusive for them. Are we going to see Starfield or ES6 be exclusive? even timed exclusivity would be damaging.
I remember the complaints in 360 generation that MS "buying content" hurt gamers, and then MS stopped and now Sony seems to grabbing everything.
@abe_hikura
My understanding is deathloop and ghost of Tokyo are timed exclusive.
We are seeing alot of this lately the Xbox showcase was full of timed exclusives.
But Sony had never been shy about exclusive content they pulled a page right out of Don mattricks playbook.
@Arugula
I agree. This Avengers game has “mediocre” written all over it. It’s disappointed every time I see it.
And as far as Spider-Man goes.....I am not surprised. It’s Sony. What else should we expect? 🙄 They are an arrogant & douchey company that pulls stuff like this all the time. COD modes, Destiny 2 weapons, etc.
@abe_hikura
The Bethesda games are timed exclusives.
And to be fair, both companies are paying for timed 3rd party exclusives. Probably bc both Microsoft & Sony won’t have many 1st party games out for awhile.
I would highly doubt Bethesda would limit the audience of games like Starfield & Elder Scrolls VI with an idiotic timed exclusive deal with either Microsoft or Sony. Plus, those two games probably won’t be out before 2025 anyways. 😂
@Grot Sony only own the film rights to Spiderman. This is either part of Disney and Sony's deal to produce Spiderman games, or Sony reached out to ensure the character remains PS4 exclusive.
Ps4 fanboys: ha tough luck buy a ps4 if you want to play as Spiderman.
Ps4 fanboys if it was for Xbox only: aww that's not fair wtf that's anti consumer **port begging starts**
@JON22
Exactly.
@JON22 Remember Tomb Raider? So much of hypocrisy lol.
@JON22 problem is you're listening to "fanboys" not rational people. All fanboys are the worst no matter which plastic box they pledge allegiance to.
Would be cool if true, Spiderman was an awesome game and we're definitely looking forward to this one!
@Terrin I'd happily be wrong about this but the wording on the Bethesda page doesn't imply timed exclusivity.
Ghostwire: Tokyo is coming to consoles exclusively for the PlayStation 5, and will also be available on PC when it launches in 2021
DEATHLOOP will launch on console exclusively for PlayStation 5 this holiday season and will run at 4K/60FPS at launch. DEATHLOOP will also be launching on PC at the same time.
I certainly don't buy the page that these game need to be exclusive, they certainly wasn't announced as such.
Well they did say exclusive content to Sony way back in the E3 2019. If it’s just Spider-Man (and related Spidey people) and getting things a little early that’s not that big of a deal. Like I didn’t have a problem waiting a month for the KH 3 DLC.
Its a no brainer as they own the broadcasting rights to Spiderman films. Not really a third party exclusive out of desparation nothing to see here.
Bit like when Master Chief was in Soul Calibur. Sony paid a big tonne of money for the Spiderman IP its no surprise.
@KelticDevil I agree it does look mediocre but douchey move possibly not given they own Spiderman broadcast rights to be expected.
EA wanting to get their hands on WB Games. Now there is a douchey move 🤣
Doesn't surprise me. With the deal Sony made with Disney to use Spider-Man in the MCU this comes as no surprise.
@Jaxx420
True. Sony did buy all the Spider-Man rights back when Marvel was broke. It’s crazy to think that was a thing once. Lol.
And I hope WB games just stay where they are, to be honest. If EA or Activision buy them, they will ruin them & shut down the studios.
If Microsoft buys them, great for us Xbox fans. But it doesn’t come with any IP except for Mortal Kombat. And it could start a chain of events where Sony feels like they would have to counter move & they will buy something that will tick us Xbox fans off. Plus we wouldn’t see any games from those studios for many years.
I much prefer Xbox buying studios like Obsidian, inXile, etc. Take a really talented studio that lacks $ & turn them into a AAA studio.
@KelticDevil Sony almost did. They were looking into buying Leyou the parent studio of the Digital Extremes (Warframe) and Splash Damage (Gears Tactics). Tencent is buying them now which I’m not Uber excited about either.
Edit: I totally agree about Obsidian and WB.
@abe_hikura Deathloop is a multiplatform game
Edit: Saw your other comment after I posted this.
@Grot the MCU thing is significantly different from the video game license. As far as we can tell, the video game license is limited to games called “spider-man”. Sony does not even have permanent ownership of animated shows or movies featuring the character, only the movies are technically permanently Sony’s, until they have a number of years without a film being produced.
Keep in mind Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 came for the Switch and features Spider-Man. Any exclusivity of Spider-Man in this game, if true, is a thing between Square and Sony. These two companies have a track record of exclusivity, see Final Fantasy 7 remake.
@KelticDevil they only bought the movie rights. The recent game deal is just Disney cutting temporary deals, as they have no interest on making games themselves. Just like they granted most Star Wars game rights to EA. These game deals all require renewal every few year’s but despite Sony’s sometime selfish (from our view) handling of spider man in movies, Disney and Sony actually get along rather well, so, as long as they don’t destroy the IP, they likely will get that deal renewer, whenever it expires.
Edit to add: I was listening to The Xbox Two podcast, those guys tend to know a few things from some people (one of them apparently known about Halo free MP for a long time now.)
One thing one of them mentioned hearing from sources is that Microsoft is indeed pursuing the WB Games acquisition, but there are tons of red tape issues. Like, they just win nothing if they buy the studios and then the entire back-catalog does not come with the purchase, with all rights, especially streaming. Be assured: if MS does want to acquire WB, no one will out-bid them. If they end up not getting them, it’s because the deal was not favorable.
@Tharsman
I listen to the Xbox Two podcast as well. It’s good stuff. I like Jez Corden from Windows Central. Rand Al Thor 19 is pretty good too. 👍🏻
Gross. Superheroes have no business being platform exclusive. Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman Black Panther, Shazam. I don't care who it is, they have no business being exclusive to a platform. Hopefully it's just some idiot drone at this retailer who doesn't know the rights situation. The last Spiderman game being PS4 exclusive was a sham. Sony pulled crummy deals like that all generation. From FF7 to Dark Souls Thre... I mean Bloodborne the totally not made up name to buy an exclusive when they needed it. "for the gamers" they said, as they force comic fans to buy their console for games. How consumer friendly.
@Tharsman Pretty sure everything is up for sale. All one package. IP. Studios. All of it.
If they do buy them, I'd be pissed if Batman was Xbox exclusive. If they did get them, it would go to PC, but Playstation players shouldn't be screwed from Batman just like Xbox players shouldn't get shafted over Spiderman.
@KelticDevil They have the movie rights temporarily. That's it.
@Tasuki They have the movie rights temporarily. Nothing else is set in stone, and definitely shouldn't be.
@Grot Sony does not have game rights for Spiderman, they have movie rights.
@Muslimbacconator it has been actually stated from the start that the deal does not include any IP ownership other than Mortal Kombat. All super hero stuff will continue to belong to WB and they will have the right to sign licensing deals as they see fit, however it is expected that anyone that buys will likely have at least some first-refusal rights for at least some game licensing deals.
The Moldor stuff is trickier since the rights for that stuff is, potentially, non transferable (WB does not own The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien’a Estate does.)
If Microsoft buys WB and gets rights for Batman games, you should not expect them to show up in other consoles. Neither Microsoft, nor Sony, should be expected to have their studios develop games for competitor platforms.
@KelticDevil I think it was Jeff that mentioned he had knowledge of those WBGames and Microsoft talks being actually ongoing but potentially detailed due to the complexity of the back catalog and game streaming rights (since MS would likely only justify the purchase if it means all those games can instantly be added to GamePass and xCloud.)
@Muslimbacconator Sony shares movie rights with Disney. Disney is able to use Peter Parker Spider-Man and a few other things for the MCU and Sony is able to use other parts of the spider- verse for their movies. It's why Venom is not connected to the MCU but it's own universe (along with Morbius and a few others). Part of the deal was that Sony has exclusive rights to Spider-Man video games as well.
@Tharsman Doesn't mean other mediums should be trapped to any platform. It's BS no matter what way you justify it. May as well force me to be a Walmart customer if I want to buy specific superhero products. I'm a Spiderman customer, I should be able to buy that where I see fit.
@Tasuki Categorically false.
@Tasuki “ Part of the deal was that Sony has exclusive rights to Spider-Man video games as well.”
The video game rights are a separate deal that was struck a few years before Sony’s spider man game came out. Before that, the video game rights were under Activision, with their last game being Amazing Spider Man 2 in 2014 (damned hard to find a copy of that game now.)
Sony does own the movie rights for extended Spider-Man related characters like Venom and Carnage, though.
To be able to use Spider-Man in the MCU, Sony had to be on board in the project. It’s not shared rights, they are part of the production of any movie involving Spider-Man.
@Tharsman
Like I said, I am not a huge fan of the acquisition.....if they did it. It just doesn’t seem like a Phil move. It would be cool, but I would rather see them buy 3-4 more studios that need $ to make games that they want to make. Hence why we get such a diverse collection of games on Xbox.
IO Interactive. Bloober Team. People Can Fly. Asobo. Maybe DOTNOD? Techland. Etc. Studios like that.
A big one to me would be to just bring Bungie back. That would be a 🎤 drop moment for everyone involved.
@KelticDevil I think it’s not unlike buying Mojang, that was an absurd amount of money just for one studio and one game, but it was worth the money. I also don’t think MS is hurting for money, they can acquire WBGames (if they feel there is value on that purchase) and still buy plenty of small studios on the side.
@Tharsman
Very true. Microsoft has enough $ to actually buy Sony.
But I like I said, I like them buying smaller studios. However....if they buy up WB & are patient and the talent of those studios make what they want (which seems to be what Phil is going for), then I am all for it! 👍🏻
@Tharsman
Oh and one more thing.....
Bungie is right out there. Bring them home. It would be so perfect. Keep Destiny multi-platform, obviously. But then let Bungie do what they want to do next. And Bungie would no longer be tied to the Halo franchise.
@KelticDevil might sound odd but don’t think Bungie is worth it. Destiny is no Minecraft, and it’s already rooted as a multi-platform that MS would just develop nothing but resentment if it stops getting content updates on PlayStation.
I also doubt they have much interest on making any other game, much less have MS make them work on Halo again.
What would MS gain from buying Bungie, then? No exclusive games, no studio to work on new stuff...
Only reason MS should buy Bungie is if the owners decide to sell and retire, at that point it’s either MS, Sony or EA. Better to just snatch it, but only at such a point.
@Tharsman
What I meant was....
Just let Bungie keep doing what they are doing with Destiny on multiple platforms, just like Minecraft.
But then help Bungie fund whatever project they want to work on next, just like they have done with the other studios they have purchased. They have to have multiple teams &, if they don’t, hire people.
And then let Bungie do what they do. It’s a no-brainer to me, to be honest.
@abe_hikura While I can see where you're coming from, Sony isn't the only one doing this so I feel like everything will turn out alright.
Out of the 32 games shown at the latest xbox event in July, 23 are timed exclusives coming to PS5 eventually. Also to keep your worries away, Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield will not be exclusive to aither platform; those are Bethesdas own games. Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo are published by Bethesda, so those were easier to make timed exclusives.
I’m sure they will be adding content for some time, enough that one character missing from the Xbox version shouldn’t take away from the experience as a whole. I’m interested to see if they are going the Hawkeye route with Spider-Man(storyline missions focused on him and usable in co-op). Can’t change main story too much cause it will be like releasing two separate games.
@abe_hikura Ghostwire is timed exclusive on console for PS5. You can check it out on PlayStation official YouTube channel. The video for the Ghostwire trailers states at the end that it is a timed exclusive.
@abe_hikura Just checked and Deathloop is also timed.
Sony should be more transparent regarding what's timed and what's true exclusive, just like Xbox is.
Imagine if Xbox got some exclusive Killer Instinct skins for mortal kombat and PlayStation got none. 💩 storm would be too mild of a description.
I’m assuming that was supposed to announced for the State of Play coming. All these whoops announcements are kind of getting out of hand...
Sony’s new moto: even our game feature exclusives won’t arrive at launch!
I’m curious what are the odds anyone still playing this game into 2021.
If they are going this route, then Xbox and PC player should have an exclusive character, Soul Calibur style.
This way is basically just 2 fingers up at anyone not buying this on PS4.
Haha make your mind up. Think this was pretty inevitable tbh.
I don't really have any interest in the game anyway though
If this is another Destiny-like live service game, then I won’t be playing it anyways. I plan on getting into Sea Of Thieves soon, so I won’t have time for more games of that type.
And I could care less if Spider-Man is in the game or not. The Hulk is my guy. Lol.
I like Spider-Man, but nothing of value was lost in this. This game doesn't look very good.
@Tharsman popping in late. But I’m glad to hear some sort of update on the WB thing. I’ve never heard of the podcast you mentioned but I’m gonna check it out.
Sadly from this conversation I learned that the Middle Earth stuff is the hardest to get. Middle Earth is in my top 3 favorite universes and would be my favorite of the ips from WB studios.
On the bright side, I saw someone mention a new quality crackdown game with the nemesis system from the Mordor games. That would be epic.
This is some of the pettiest of exclusivity deals. It's one thing to just make the game exclusive. With this they just expect Xbox/PC players to just pay the same price for less of a game? Game should be $10 cheaper. Well, I probably won't give this game a chance now...
Marvel has been lame since Disney got them. The comics are as generic as they get, sort of like the way this game looks.
This type of exclusivity is goofy though. Are customers really going to buy a playstation just to see Spider Man? This isn't the Todd Mcfarlane or Steve Ditko version. This is the Sony/Marvel/Disney approved generic version of classic characters. Get real.
@Cyberbotv2 I don’t entirely agree. I like a lot of stuff in the early 2010’s and Old Man Series has been pretty good too, and that’s newer, and not generic... But the company ends up killing any comic that doesn’t earn huge dollars signs out the gate these days sadly :/
I admit it’s goofy. I really don’t think anyone going to switch for one character, but I think it’s more like the Zelda stuff in Skyrim. Sony thinks of Spider-Man as theirs even if Disney could contested it. It’s like Mario = Nintendo Master Chief = MS, Sony kind of only Spider-man to fill that role. They didn't really have a character that the general public recognizes as theirs until Spidey due to the Movies and the Disney fight. (I’m waffling) point is I think Sony trying establish Spidey as a company mascot so and the Avengers came up. I wouldn't be surprised though if you see more Spidey content in places.
Edit: for well clarity on my messaging.
Hm... Sony up to their old exclusion shenanigans again?
Not that I'm interested in this uncanny valley version of an Avengers game anyway, but this is petty as f***.
@JON22
For bonus points, remember that - over at the sass dimension - "port begging will not be tolerated". I'm not even kidding.
@ThanosReXXX
Remember the old days, back when console-exclusive characters were something cool that everyone got? Yeah, good times.
Since Marvel is now owned by Disney I’ve found myself enjoying it less and less, not because of the Disney aspect of it but the direction it’s gone.
Back on subject, I wasn’t planning on getting it anyway because chances are it won’t be any good
@AlexSora89 I do, and good times indeed, but this is not the same. Back then, each console had the complete roster of characters in a game, and the console exclusive one was an added bonus.
Seeing as Spider-Man is both a standard and integral character where the Avengers story/universe is concerned, this is a pretty childish move by Sony.
