343 Industries has confirmed today that Halo Infinite has been delayed until 2021 "to ensure the team has adequate time to deliver a Halo game experience that meets our vision."
In an update on the official Halo Waypoint website, Studio Head Chris Lee addressed the fans:
Today I want to share an important Halo Infinite development update with the community. We have made the difficult decision to shift our release to 2021 to ensure the team has adequate time to deliver a Halo game experience that meets our vision.
The decision to shift our release is the result of multiple factors that have contributed to development challenges, including the ongoing COVID-related impacts affecting us all this year. I want to acknowledge the hard work from our team at 343 Industries, who have remained committed to making a great game and finding solutions to development challenges. However, it is not sustainable for the well-being of our team or the overall success of the game to ship it this holiday.
We know this will be disappointing to many of you and we all share in that sentiment. The passion and support the community has shown over the years has been incredible and inspiring. We wanted nothing more than to play our game with the community this holiday. The extra time will let us finish the critical work necessary to deliver the most ambitious Halo game ever at the quality we know our fans expect.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Unfortunately, this means that Halo Infinite won't be launching alongside the Xbox Series X - the console is now officially releasing this November, with over 100 optimized for Xbox Series X titles planned for this year.
How do you feel about the delay to Halo Infinite? Let us know in the comments below.

I knew it was gonna get delayed, the writing was all over it. It never launched with the system except for Halo 1.
I'm devastated, obviously, but if it means the game is in a better state, then I'm all for it.
Bad news for the launch of Xbox Series X obviously, but after the mostly negative feedback to the recent reveal I’m not surprised.
Ouch! Let's hope Microsoft have anther big hitter up their sleeve for launch.
Thank god this was necessary. Just release it with Series X optimised RT version.
Was bound to happen with how laughable the reveal was.
It was like showing an OG Xbox 180 game vs whatever Sony will show for next gen.
@Royalblues It's incompetence, plain and simple. Is it the devs themselves? Leadership at the studio? Or the leadership direction from Microsoft themselves? All of the above? It's a failure by someone. Likely someone who has been failing with the company since 2013.
I’m sorry for the people who were looking forward to this game :c
MS have been doing so many things right but this is just poor. Especially as the game has been in development for several years.
Game Pass catalogue and third party will carry them through launch but one of their flagship first party games should have been ready.
@graysoncharles do you play PC games? Otherwise you know this is not true.
Bad news for the launch, what else is there to say... I completely understand not releasing the game before it's ready but the Series X will miss this game not being at the launch..
Now we just need Spider-Man Morales delayed to finish 2020. I have never lived through a year like this and I'm 49.
This should have been ready for launch but from the last reveal it clearly wasn't. I'd rather they delay it to make it better rather than release it in a shoddy state and then patch the hell out of it. I also think without COVID19 this would probably have been good to go at launch.
On a slightly separate note, I wonder if they'll actually try and launch the Series X with a Halo Infinite beta? Maybe..?
You had one job 343 😂😂😂😂
I feel bad for Phil and his team.
First their messaging and services fall on deaf ears. Then the Showcase is met with ridicule. Now Halo won't make launch.
They've done such amazing things to get Xbox back on track too.
I totally agree with the decision though. It won't effect my day one purchase but it'll have a massive impact on sales.
I guess I'm going to have to apologize to all the Nintendo fanboys. What a waste of a year.
@LocalPenguin We need to remember that Phil and his team get paid thousands of dollars to get this right and despite having an almost 5 years (after HALO 5) to correct their course they still are making amateur mistakes one after another. Announce X20/20 then cancel it. Announce Halo infinite as launch title then delay it and so on.
I am not going to argue with all the negative people in this thread bc......why?
But I will say......this sucks that Halo is not coming out in 2020. I’m not surprised. Covid-19 has effected all teams for every company.
But people need to be patient & let the team at 343 make the game that they want. That is what is most important (besides the health of everyone involved that is developing it).
If they release they game when it’s not ready, people will destroy Microsoft for ruining Halo bc they forced 343 to release a game that is not ready yet.
Microsoft made the right decision here. I’ll be looking forward to playing Halo on my Series X in 2021.
Oops, not good at all. At least Series X and PS5 will have Cyberpunk as a launch game unless it also....
I'm more shocked a forza wasn't ready. Perhaps they are waiting to get the tech right before they launch it as a games as a service
@KelticDevil I’m with ya. I agree they made the right decision here. I’m still pumped for the game. Especially after the digital foundry video basically showed how they are really only a ray tracing update away from having the graphics about to where they need. Let them get the update and the lighting will be night and day.
@BrilliantBill
Phil gets paid “thousands of dollars”, eh? 🙄
Omg. Thank god for the ignore button! Lol.
@sixrings
I actually agree with you! I was shocked a Forza Motorsport wasn’t coming out at launch. But they may have ran into the same issues 343 did with Halo.
Covid-19.
However, Phil did say that Motorsport was “early in development”. So that means a re-boot, in my opinion.
@xMightyMatt14x
Exactly. People will overreact about this, bc they always do. But this is a good thing.
Clearly, Halo wasn’t ready yet. So release it when it’s done. It’s really that simple. I’m not sure why people would be upset about this.
And it’s not like we all don’t have backlogs the size of a small country these days anyways. Lol
@BrilliantBill I agree mate, I do. It's such a bad look. Money aside though you can tell when a man is passionate about something and Phil Spencer really cares about Xbox. This will be a devastating blow to him and his team, regardless of their salaries.
@KelticDevil exactly! Also shocked about forza too. But hey this means we are in for a great 2021.
Halo infinite, Psychonauts 2, possibly Everwild and I’m betting forza as the holiday release for 2021.
I guess PS4 won 2020. I would have thought xbox basically dropping support of the one a while back meant for sure there would be games ready in 2020. I mean I thought they had games just sitting waiting for the series x since before the pandemic. And I thought PlayStation was wasting two huge hits on their soon to be out of date console. Man I got lots of things wrong. Phil had a good poker face because that is really pathetic news. If the x doesn't undercut the PS then I don't know whose going to be buying a system before 2021
Microsoft has been in the console space since 2000, and in gaming since forever. HOW are they so bad at this? HOW? everyone who saw the gameplay demo thought, "oh yeah, that's not coming out on time." How is that the only first party game? you bought 15 STUDIOS, listened to the fans concerns, and STILL were banking on Halo?! HOW is Forza not ready? how is there no other AAA first party game coming?! how are they NEVER READY?! oh and Sony is apparently buying up exclusivity of a bunch of games by outbidding Microsoft.... WHY ARE THEY SO BAD AT THIS?!
Looks like my X will be gathering dust for a few extra months.
@sixrings the ps4 won 2020 vs xbox yes but overall I think the switch has both beat to a pulp this year, its shifted more units and it's had the most games in the top 10 every week whilst Sony have had a couple.
If Sony and xbox don't have any heavy hitters at launch then I'm pretty sure the switch will still be the console to have this holiday season.
Fair play to MS/343. Yes it’s annoying when games get delayed but it’s usually for the best. I was worried they’d just release whatever they had and patch it up later but hopefully now the extra wait will be worth it.
@LocalPenguin Yeah I know. Phil has done a ton of good for Xbox
and I don't mean to belittle his work. It's just that after all those good work it is sad to see the console launch without a big first party title.
But sadly Infinite was in no shape to launch in November and if that decision was made a broken halo at launch would be far worse.
Not surprised, but at least it wasn't cancelled...yet. It's a hard sell when your only gameplay is for a 2021 game, and everything else you show comes as a CGI trailer. 2022? 2023? When will the games come?
"Xbox has no games" continues
@Royalblues agreed. The sheer amount of people defending ms for the sake of defending them by gamers in denial is crazy.
That's tough. The launch will likely not go as well. But I don't know if the PS5 will do much better. These are likely 600 dollar machines few will have money for.
@KelticDevil you know what’s funny? McDonalds employees are also paid thousands of dollars! Minimum wage is literally “thousands of dollars” a year! People that say stuff like that expose how they have never even held a part time job in their lives.
Anyways, these comment threadS been doing wonders for my ignore list.
@Tharsman
Yea I agree. The ignore button is going to get a workout today with all the Push Square trolls coming over here bc they smell blood in the water. Lol
@Octane
Xbox has plenty of games, troll. Ugh.
The ignore button is on fire today. Lol.
They made the right call to delay the game to 2021.. If the game can be improved upon than by all means delay it.. They need Halo to be perfect when it launches..
@KelticDevil Yeah... Negative Nancy's, aye? And another thing: Phil Spencer hasn't even been fully involved for that long yet, because he first had to clean up the mess that Mattrick made. And every move and decision he's made ever since, has only been to the benefit of the Xbox brand.
Oh, well. Haters gonna hate and all that.
@KelticDevil I think he may have been being sarcastic he isnt one of the usual nutjobs.
Well, that's too bad. But nothing we can do about it. TBH, now I may wait until Halo launch to get my new console. But it is good thing that they want to make it best it can be.
@ThanosReXXX
Very true. And what do people want? Do they want 343 to have to go through “crunch” just to put out a video game that isn’t ready bc people are spoiled & impatient?
Some people are ridiculous these days. Ugh.
@Jaxx420
Oh ok. My bad then. Lol.
Best decision they could have made and the game will be all the better for it.
@KelticDevil lol, take it easy, it's just a joke.
@KelticDevil On a side note: I can vouch for @Octane: he's not a troll. Maybe a bit weird sometimes, but definitely not a troll...
As expected, PS fans are having a field day with this.
I’m probably one of the few that’s actually glad this has been delayed to 2021 as I’m going to be a late adopter of the Series X. I’d love to get it on release in November but with 3 kids each wanting a Switch this Christmas it’s a bit too much to buy a Series X as well. It’ll be the first time I’ve never bought a new Xbox on day one since the original.
I hope Halo Infinite isn’t going to be delayed to late 2021 as I’m looking in get the Series X around March/April. Which games are left that’s making it to launch?
I have to come back to my repeated refrain here. WHY are these two companies launching consoles this year? Even without COVID. WHY are we actually going through a console launch from two companies that are clearly in no way ready for a console launch? It's like reliving the WiiU all over again. Buy our new console. We don't have games for it, but here's some old games you can play a little better than before!
I mean, for XSeX considering it's sort of a pseudo-PC the graphics upgrade actually has some value for buyers with a big library already. It's like upgrading your GPU for....presumably about the price of a modern GPU. In that regard XSeX early adoption is still a better bet than PS5.
But NEITHER company has anything to launch their console with. Who's really going to buy a launch console for the prettier version of Ubisoft games? Xbox has literally zip as far as first party system sellers, and Sony has, as far as we know so far, an enhanced PS4 DLC. MAYBE they get GT out the door at launch which would show up MS if Forza isn't ready. Short of that we have 2 companies screaming to buy their new console, based on the promise that in the future they'll make it worthwhile but right now don't have a particular reason to do so.
It's the weirdest launch. Early adopters will buy anyway. If the price is right and the availability is there, I might be included...for one or both brands...or neither. But maybe supply will be less constrained than the PS4 launch was, which was huge because PS3 owners had lousy experiences with 3rd party games up to that point, and because 360 owners were fleeing in droves to PS after the XBone launch disaster. And these platforms aren't Switch so it shouldn't be a full year of shortages like a Nintendo launch
But I'm only buying it, if I do, for an upgraded GPU for my existing backlog because "if I'm going to spend the time playing, I might as well play them the best I can."
XSeX is clearly the better upgrade first for that use. And yet half the games at the top of my backlog are the ones on PS...which doesn't really benefit from the upgrade as far as we know.
