Following the release of the free Operation 3: Gridiron update for Gears 5 yesterday, the game's Multiplayer Design Director Ryan Cleven has announced he's leaving developer The Coalition due to "personal issues", indicating that the past six years have "taken a toll".
Cleven announced this via Twitter, where he also commented that Gears 4 and 5 have been the highlight of his development career so far. You can see the full statement in the tweet below:

Cleven stated that due to the departure of his mentor Rod Fergusson from The Coalition, it gave him the opportunity to re-evaluate his priorities. Fergusson left The Coalition to join Blizzard as the head of Diablo earlier this year, suggesting it was "time for a new adventure".

My GPA took a dip 2 years ago trying to balance an unmaintainable work and school schedule, a relative and a friend's drug problems, and a stalker. I spent so many all-nighters working I could not digest food very well, and I was a mental wreck from dealing with 2 people's substance abuse and the trauma from the stalker. People don't take breaks when they should, I hope his sabbatical goes well.
I have never been a fan of Gears multiplayer & I think Horde has grown stagnant over the years.
