Microsoft Research uploaded an old video to its YouTube channel a few days ago showcasing a "versatile controller concept for mobile gaming." The video was made back in 2018, but represents work carried out between 2012 and 2014, so it goes back a bit!
It's still a really interesting showcase, however, highlighting how the controller could potentially operate with mobile and tablet devices, which ultimately could prove invaluable for Project xCloud users. It starts off by demoing the controller as a standalone device, before revealing how it can be snapped in half and clipped to the side of a tablet.
The potential downside, as Windows Central has noted, is the lack of bezels most phones and tablets have these days compared to a few years ago, making it difficult to clip anything onto the side of a screen without taking up too much space. That said, this controller is simply a concept, and there's every chance the final design (if it ever comes to fruition) will look nothing like this.
What do you think of the concept? Would you buy one to use with Project xCloud? Let us know in the comments.

Hoping the final design looks nothing like this and is more similar to Joycons or the current Razer solutions.
@redd214 That's what I'm expecting. I can't imagine it'll look much like this by the time it (possibly) comes out.
Mobile gaming is just inferior. I'm sorry but it is. Streaming is never going to work as well as having the device in the same room. You can't beat the laws of physics. There are people who can notice the input delay from older wireless controllers. Now take that and run that signal through a dozen repeaters a few hundred or thousand miles away to a server hub and enjoy lag fiesta!
And F2P touch screen only mobile gaming, riddled with paywalls or "energy limits" to push you into spending money and gatcha mechanics... nope. Hell nope.
I'll keep my Switch and either a PS or Xbox. Haven't decided which of the latter two yet. Leaning Toward Xbox now, since it seems to have much better backward compatibility. But both PS5 and XboxX seem to be focusing too heavily on raw specs and I've not seen any games yet that really scream "buy this console right bloody now!"
@Heavyarms55 Sure that streaming is not currently the same as playing local, but xbox console streaming is working really great. Here in Brazil xCloud isn't available yet, but Console Streaming is, and runs flawlessly on 4G network. I've managed to play Gears 5 campaing just fine, with no issues with shooting or delays. I was really surprised that I could progress the story on my phone with no problem at all. Smooth in all 45 minutes of gameplay.
