It's finally here! GTA V has launched for next-gen consoles this week, and if you want to know how to transfer your Story Mode and GTA Online save file from Xbox One to Xbox Series X and Series S, you've come to the right place!
How To Transfer Your GTA 5 Save From Xbox One To Xbox Series X and S
First up, you'll need a copy of GTA V on Xbox One. Once the game is loaded up, head to the 'Game' tab within the pause menu. Here, you'll see an 'Upload Save' option, press it, and your progress is now saved to the cloud via the Rockstar Games Social Club. Once you load up the next gen version of GTA V, you can choose to carry over your progress.
All the relevant achievements will also unlock again if you've played the game on Xbox One before.
How To Transfer Your GTA Online Character From Xbox One To Xbox Series X and S
Thankfully, alongside your main story mode save, your GTA Online character can also be brought forward to Xbox Series X and Series S. As this mode is all online-based, the process is pretty automatic. As long as you have a Rockstar Games Social Club account, your character will simply appear on the Xbox Series X|S version when you load it up, and it's up to you whether you want to bring it across or start from scratch.
Be aware that as soon as you migrate, the character will no longer be available on the Xbox One version.
Cross-Platform GTA V Save Transfers
Somewhat surprisingly, both of these transfers can be done across console platforms! So, if you owned a PS4 last generation and played GTA V there, you can bring that story save, and your GTA Online character, over to Xbox Series X|S using the above method. However, GTA Online cash only transfers within the same console family, so it's best to spend that before bringing your character across platforms.
Now you're all set with bringing your saves over to GTA V on Xbox Series X|S. Any questions? Ask us below!

Any crossplay? I doubt it, but thought I'd ask.
They lost me at “no free upgrade”
Most of us have bought the whole-a** game at least twice already.
Rockstar you disappoint me
@Dusk_Actual I might have accepted a upgrade fee, but full price they can "do one"
Play-Asia Has it listed for $69.99.

The cross-platform cloud save feature is much appreciated.
What isn't appreciated is no upgrade path. Not even any mention of an upgrade 'fee'.
No chance I'm buying GTA V for full price AGAIN.
Any idea if you can just download the main game and not the online?
@Dusk_Actual @blinx01 Yes. Nintendo has done the same with every single Switch port. I say it because I have a Wii U and a Switch.
Absolutely NOT purchasing this game a third time. Rockstar can shove it.
What about if you DON’T want to carry over your save and start again?
@norwichred Then simply don’t upload your save to the cloud. Even by doing that you would still have the option to start the game from the beginning.
This is cool, as if I buy the Next Gen upgrade I'll probably do it on PS5 instead of XSX due to the price, that's about max I am willing to pay for a Next Gen upgrade of a game I already own.
I thought Rockstar specifically said cross saves wouldn’t work. Did they change it? Guess I’ll find out in a little over an hour.
Edit: it does! Nice!
I totally agree with everybody that this should have been a free upgrade. So many of the companies have offered that, it should be the standard at this point.
At the same time, I also understand why Rockstar is not making this a free upgrade. I am not saying I agree with this, just that I understand why they are doing this. At the end of the day, Rockstar is to make money. That’s what companies do. In 2020 alone, GTA V sold over 20 million copies. Those are huge numbers, even if the game was new. So many would love to sell that much, but considering the game at that point was 7 years old, that only made it even more impressive. Rockstar is reselling the game because they know it will sell 10’s of millions of copies. Again, I don’t agree with this, just stating why they are doing this.
If we want a free upgrade for a game like this, we need to stop buying this 9 year old game. Your wallet will speak volumes to companies more than posting your disappointments because it’s where the money is at that’s most important.
I don’t mind paying a sensible price for a next gen update, but there are so many bugs with this port. Cars and objects pop in and out only a very short distance away destroying the game.
It’s like they didn’t actually build a next gen version. It’s essentially the same version, all they did was massively reduce draw distance so they could do it 4k instead. That it took them so long to do it is shocking really.
If they fix this then fair enough, but right now I wish I hadn’t bought it not because it’s the 3rd time buying, but because it’s literally not a finished product
