Want to know how to buy 'delisted' backwards compatible Xbox games like Daytona USA, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Jet Set Radio and many others? It's a question we see popping up all the time, and the solution applies to a variety of backwards compatible Xbox 360 games — so if you can't find a game digitally on the Microsoft Store, this might help you.
Seemingly for licensing reasons, certain games aren't available to purchase directly from the store on modern consoles, so you have to use a workaround and access the old Xbox 360 marketplace. You can do this on an actual Xbox 360 if you want to (the easiest method), or you can navigate to the old marketplace on an internet browser instead.
As an example, here's how to buy Daytona USA on Xbox One, Series X and Series S using the old store:
- Go to the Daytona USA page on the Xbox 360 marketplace
- Locate the 'Full Game' option, and then select 'Download to Xbox 360'
- Pay for the game, and you should then find it in your games library on a modern Xbox
If you want to find a different game, try searching "[Game Name] Xbox 360 marketplace" in Google. Make sure it's part of the Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S backwards compatibility list before attempting to purchase it though. If you can't find what you're looking for, it most likely no longer exists on the marketplace in any form due to licensing issues.
You may run into a common issue when doing this, in which you hit 'Download to Xbox 360' but all you get is a pop-up window with an endless loading circle. Firstly, we suggest trying as many different browsers as possible to see if the problem goes away (Edge, Chrome, Opera, etc). Bizarrely, we've also found that the US version of the website works better than the British version — and in our experience at least, we still only had to pay the UK price when using it, and didn't run into any region-specific problems. That said, your mileage may vary with certain games, so be cautious.
As a final resort, a Reddit user actually created their own script to bypass this issue a couple of years ago, but it's quite old and has since been archived. We have no idea whether this still works as of February 2022, so needless to say it's something that's only worth trying at your own risk, and we can't vouch for it ourselves.
Hopefully you'll soon be able to play a 'delisted' back compat game on your newer Xbox console!
Have you had success with this in the past? Let us know, and feel free to ask questions in the comments.

Weird how its compatible but not purchasable
I can't buy anything on X360 marketplace. When I put something in the shopping cart and click 'buy' it takes me to the main MS site. I'm left with looking for discs on auction sites where games like the FEAR and Max Payne trilogy already cost around $50-60 per game. It's nuts.
Do you have a list for other games available to purchase this way?
@MagicCat Unfortunately not. I'll see if we can put something together at some point.
@MagicCat L4D2, the orange box, prince of Persia(cel shaded version) can be purchased this way.
@PhhhCough The two GTA 4 DLCs as well.
@FraserG also jet set radio, probably others, but those were the ones I wanted. Also the Maxs's
Well that's a terribly useful trick! Thanks! Knew I kept my 360 for some mysterious reason.
What I would like is a (simple) way to buy Ridge Racer 6 in Europe. It doesn't appear to be available online and physical copies have shot up in price.
@FraserG Thanks!
@PhhhCough Thanks! Can you play jet set radio on series s?
@Krysus The main reason I kept my 360 is because I have the TMNT, Simpsons and Xmen Arcade games on it.
@MagicCat yes
I’ve tried this with Google, chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari and as soon as I click ‘buy’ I just get taken to a blank white screen every time. @fraser
@swagbag7 Disc only BC game. WB never bothered to make a digital version for the 360, only PS3.
Seems that old marketplace needs a bit of tinkering. I can only buy 360 games if there's credit in my account.
This works for Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as well!
Does this work in the UK?
Wished Ridge Racer 6 was made availble for download in europe
@jarvismp I'm not sure what the answer is, sorry! Try a mobile device and see if that works?
Maybe try Microsoft Edge on your console...?
@Nightcrawler71 Yes it works in the UK! I've used it a few times (including for Daytona USA).
Safari browser👎
Google chrome👎
Microsoft edge👎
……..
Amazon Silk browser👍……… worked like a charm😉
@FraserG cheers 👍
@FraserG You guys already have so many compiled lists I use so regularly. I link every single for my gaming club, and everyone loves them. Thank you guys so much!
I want to get Ridge Racer 6 but it's impossible. You can't buy games on the USA marketplace if your region is UK. You can get games from UK and EU but not from other continents. I tried with Ridge Racer 6 and the Silent Hill games.
"Sorry
This offer is not valid in your region".
@Kingery2011 True but remember that Sonic Origins is coming next year, with native 16:9 versions of the classic Sonic games, including Sonic 3 & Knuckles 😍.
@FraserG "try searching '[Game Name] Xbox 360 marketplace' in Google". You mean in Bing 😝.
@MagicCat But if I want to play the game, I have to change the console region, right? Every time I want to play it.
@MagicCat So I change the account region, buy the game and then I can change back to UK and play, right? Thank you, I'll try that then.
@MagicCat Thank you.
@MagicCat No and I don't have a second account either. I'm a bit confused because you said you got a US card but you got the game on the Brazil store? Also, I remember a person from UK on Pure Xbox saying that he got this game but he had to change the region to play it, so I'm a bit worried it might work for you but not for others?
@MagicCat Ridge Racer 6 is cheaper on the Mexico website but I'm going to add my credit card for the USA website and see if it works.
It's a shame this doesn't work with F.E.A.R. Really weird they added that to the backwards compatibility list even though you can't buy it. The only way I know of is to pay $40 or $50 for a new copy of it on eBay (I don't buy used copies of old games like that, as who knows what the disc looks like now).
@MagicCat Right, it doesn't work. Where should I buy the USA gift card?
@MagicCat That's what I was going to ask. It says that the $10 card costs £10.38.
@MagicCat This is scary LOL. I bought the $10 card with my credit card on Eneba as you said (I tried on Xbox.com but it's not possible because of my region). I can't wait to see if I can play the game when I change the console back to UK!
@MagicCat Yeah I redeemed the gift card and bought the game on the console like you told me to and I only changed the region on the console not on the account but no, I'm not able to play the game.
@MagicCat I downloaded the game and there is an error that I need to sign in with the same account but I didn't change any account.
@MagicCat Yes, I restarted the console and then I did a full shutdown. The problem is Eneba doesn't admit refunds (I had to accept that when I purchased the gift card).
@MagicCat I tried now and it does but my intention was not having to switch regions.
@MagicCat If you find anything please let me know and thank you, you just wanted to help and I appreciate it.
Thank you, @FraserG — I was able to purchase [Daytona] using a computer. This will go perfect with my new racing cockpit and wheel!!!😁😁😁
I'd also like a list of games available this way
Question: Anyone playing this game (Daytona) with a wheel & force feedback? My wheel (Fanatec) works, but lacks FFB😣...
I bought my USA gift card on Gamivo, switched region on my console, redeemed the code, bought the Ridge Racer 6. Bingo. All done.
If you are doing this remember to pick up all the free DLC too, there's lots of it.
@JetmanUK Have you read the conversation above? Can you play the game when you switch your console back to UK?
@BlueOcean TBH I had not read the above, still haven't. Haha.
I'd purchased a game that wasn't on my store (UK) previously and it works just fine when I'm on my region.... Just switched, RR6 does not. Very weird.
Ah well, I'll switch back to USA when I want to play. I wonder if this is just an issue with 360 games? The previous game I bought was an Xbox One game.
3 browsers and 2 attempts on Google Chrome and it managed to work with PayPal... after I bought a $10 gift card for it not to be a payment option on the website.
@JetmanUK No idea but same thing happened to me. This is the first time I buy a game from outside UK and EU.
@MagicCat Are the games that work for you without changing the region Xbox 360 or Xbox One games? And what games they are? Just in case I want to get one of them.
I might have to do @JetmanUK 's trick, RR6 is good enough for the hassle of switching region
@Raffles I was thinking of you! If you do it, you have to buy an Xbox gift card for US ($10), change your console region to US and purchase the game ($9.99) redeeming the gift card.
@MagicCat But if I download a free game/demo that will only tell if that particular game works or not without changing the region. Did you get Silent Hill Homecoming and Downpour?
@MagicCat Alright, I'll see if there's a free game that I haven't acquired and get the US version.
I think the issue with rr6 is its not available on UK store
All the other games are available on both stores
Annoying but just switch to USA Mexico etc on console only to play it...
Now f.e.a.r
Please tell me how to get it without payin £50 on eBay...
@Tasuki Yeah theres that too. Love those classics.
@MagicCat no that I can find pal no
F.e.a.r
Early release
Never available anywhere digitally
Yea not working for me. It's asking me to update me cc since the one on file is expired. I have a valid card on my current xbox/Microsoft account but it's not syncing to the old marketplace link 🤷♂️
@MagicCat What free games or trials are available in USA but not available in here so I can see if they work here?
@MagicCat I did it. That game works fine in my region (UK).
@MagicCat Ridge Racer is a Xbox 360 game. Perhaps all Xbox 360 games that are not available in here present this problem?
@MagicCat Perhaps there are not many backwards compatible games that are available only in one region.
I would LOVE to find and purchase FEAR 3!! I want it badly! Lol
I did this for my Xbox Series S and it works Perfectly! THANK YOU!
@SnesSwitch Same here, I'm enjoying Sonic 3 on my Xbox Series S.
Updated the guide to cover more games than just 'Daytona USA'. 👍
As far as i am aware Ridge Racer 6 and Spongebob Underpants Slam are the only games that require the region on your console to match the storefront you bought them from in order to play them; usually once the game is on your XB1 it will play regardless of console region setting
The irony here is that the disc version of RR6 is region free and XBLA games should be region free ie Spongbob; the fact you can only acquire them from american stores may be an unusual factor in this case
@Leprecorn A lot of it maybe because of licensing issues - not always just the IP, but things like music too can get a game delisted. If the Publisher doesn't/can't renew the license to use a certain piece of music for example, they can't 'sell' the game anymore. Its the same with Activision's Spiderman/Marvel games and most likely the Transformers games too...
@GlasgowGuy Yes, I bought Ridge Racer 6 but requested a refund because it doesn't work unless you set your console region to USA. I assumed that this hasn't changed since I tried in December.
@FraserG "You may run into a common issue when doing this, in which you hit 'Download to Xbox 360' but all you get is a pop-up window with an endless loading circle."
This is still the old bad MS at play. It 'magically' works in their own Edge browser but doesn't often in Chrome despite Edge now being a Chromium based browser. They would have had to go specifically out of their way to make it work on one not the other.
EDIT: Is that the full list of games that have been delisted?
I get the marketplace. Get the game but no option to buy. Says game not available separately. Have been trying on and off for months, tried everything, every browser and nothing. Time to give up. @fraser
@themightyant Not the full list, there are many of them (and it's not easy to identify them all).
@jarvismp What's the specific game you're looking for?
@themightyant I seriously doubt that Microsoft are doing this on purpose. They would kill the marketplace website if they could but they can't until they stop supporting Xbox 360, which is nice of them. Besides, they have moved the Xbox and Xbox 360 games to the new website that works fine and to the Xbox One and Series S/X stores except for those games that are delisted somewhere or didn't get the permission for whatever reason.
I got this to work on Edge within windows 10. Have to make sure to click download to Xbox 360 and not “buy”. Went through and charged my credit card. Now downloadable on my series X.
@FraserG Still Daytona and also tried Ridge Racer 6 but never had bay success with those two. Mainly Daytona but have tried pretty much every tip and trick and no joy sadly.
A proper list of workable short cuts and a list would be ace. I’m very interested in this.
@jarvismp Hmm, what country are you in?
@Banjo- that might have been me. I bought a 10 dollar US ms card. Redeemed it. Changed the location of my Xbox to US and bought ridge racer. It only plays if your Xbox is set to US region though (which takes away some UK games) until you switch back. I’ve since bought a UK disc copy from CEX for £30. So plays like normal now.
@jarvismp I bought Daytona before it was delisted but I had the same problem as you when trying to acquire Jet Set Radio. What worked was doing it on the Opera browser. If you don't want to download another browser for your PC just do it on your phone which is what I did and you can uninstall it easily afterwards. Make sure to install the full version and not the mini version. Log in, add a payment method if asked, even if it's the same and if it's like the Jet Set Radio issue, it will work.
@Scenes Can you try to play it on your UK account without the disc inserted to see if anything has changed since December?
@Banjo- Since Edge moved to Chromium every website we build works identically on Edge except in a few areas they have specifically changed. It uses the exact same underlying Blink browser engine and V8 JavaScript engine. My point is, barring a few quirks, you have to go out of your way to make websites behave differently on Egde and Chrome, it doesn't happen by accident. But believe what you want to believe.
@themightyant "It doesn't happen by accident. But believe what you want to believe".
You seem a bit paranoid about this. Microsoft didn't create these issues on purpose to have a group of old-school players switch to Edge when trying to purchase delisted backwards compatible games LOL. Besides, as I said, Opera worked for me and Edge didn't (Edge=Microsoft). Probably, because Opera didn't do the double check with delisted games that we aren't supposed to be able to buy and Edge did. Other players had luck using VPNs such as Tunnel Bear that change their country IP, which is something I'd also recommend when having availability issues.
You mentioned Google and Chrome. Well, it has been proved by hackers and programmers that Google make some things play worse on browsers that aren't their own Chrome, especially YouTube, which is one of the reasons why Microsoft moved to Chromium. Of course, Google denied it but...
"That means Google could do the same for Firefox and Edge, but it chooses not to..."
"The alleged employee claims that Google added a “hidden empty div over YouTube videos” to reduce the performance of Edge browser which uses Microsoft’s hardware acceleration for videos".
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-to-fix-slow-edge-youtube
https://www.windowslatest.com/2018/12/20/google-denies-intentionally-causing-youtube-issues-in-windows-10s-edge-browser/
@Banjo- nothings changed. It’s not listed in the UK store. For the digital version I have to switch my Xbox location to US and reboot. Then I can find it in the US store, download and play it. If I change my location back to UK with it installed it won’t launch. You have to have the Xbox location set to US to play the digital version. But that takes away the option of playing some games only available on the UK. I can see my ‘full game list’ number drop by about 30.
The UK physical copy works. Exactly as you’d expect. Put the disc in. It installs and plays fine with it set to UK.
@Scenes Thank you, it's a pity that the only way it's to buy a physical copy or change the Xbox location.
@Banjo- You're right it could be on Google's end, that's fair.
But my initial point still stands that if no specific code is written for either browsers they should perform the same. One of other party would have to go out of their way to make it perform differently.
I managed to do this to get the Orange Box for my Series S. Took a few goes. I had to access the US marketplace to add a payment card, then try and buy it via the US (I'm a UK owner). It took about 5 attempts across different browsers but suddenly worked with no obvious reason as to why. Orange Box £14.99. Seemed reasonable
@themightyant Yes but your first comment suggested that it's a glitch made by Microsoft on purpose. I asked @FraserG about Jet Set Radio on another thread. He suggested to switch browser and the one that worked for me when getting Jet Set Radio was Opera. Edge (Microsoft) is my default browser and didn't work. I only have issues with delisted games or region-blocked games so the fact that they are not available it's what it's supposed to happen.
I have bought a couple of games using Tunnel Bear (a free VPN) when trying to get games that were not available. This is not necessary except for some games that are not available in UK but EU or vice versa, including Games with Gold. Sometimes the browser or console check your country IP and if it doesn't match with the game region, the game is not available. As I said, it's not always necessary but sometimes it's the only thing that worked for me.
FYI: I did this today with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time just as a way to test it again — didn't work for me when using the GB link (I got the endless loading circle), but when I switched to the US link, it all worked fine and swapped to UK pricing when I got to the checkout. Game's showing up in my Series X library now.
The US solution for UK users might not work for everything though, and you also potentially need to be wary of region-specific stuff...
@FraserG UK mate
@jarvismp Very strange... I don't know what to suggest! You're using the link in the article for Daytona, yeah?
@Banjo- tried this and still no joy. Just brings up the game but says there is no option to buy it
@FraserG yeah using the link from the article
@jarvismp Even tried opening pure Xbox via opera browser but just get the wheel of doom all the time.
@Banjo- Yes that was my initial assumption. I still remember many of their apps not working, or working worst on other browsers and their stock 'solution' was to use IE and later (non -chromium) Edge. They've all been at it over the years in the browser wars, I assumed it was more of the same.
@jarvismp Tried US browser as well and just get that game not available separately. Will have to give it up as a bad job. Thanks for all the advice though. Just one of those things.
@Banjo- it doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon unfortunately. But at least there’s a way to play it if you really want to even if you have to jump through some hoops.
I already bought Daytona years ago but unable to download it. I don’t want to have to buy it again.
@FraserG
Thanks for this article. It helped me get Aegis Wing. For whatever reason the game was telling me I needed to login into my Xbox account when I tried to get it from the store on my Series X. This round about method ended up working instead.
Without opening a can of worms here - can anyone actually download these games to their 360 - I bought a few in the sales over the last few weeks & there are some that just will not download to my 360 - gets to 100% then goes back to 0% & continues to do this in an endless loop; switching the 360 off & allowing background downloads just gives a corrupted file, eg:
Munch's Oddysee
SW Ep.3
Max Payne 2
Spongebob Truth Squared
Manhunt
Red Dead Revolver
Tried on 2 different 360s with same results
FEAR 3, First Templar & Thrillville OTR installed fine
@GlasgowGuy Now that you mention it, I've had this issue in the fairly recent past with my Xbox 360 (not just with backwards compatible games — with any digital game), and have yet to come across a solution. I was finding that it was getting to, like, 56% and then immediately going back to 0% and starting again on an endless loop.
Not a problem on the modern consoles, of course.
I just wish m$ would put Blur on the list. That's all I care about really. And Condemned 2 of course.
@jarvismp More ideas... Use a VPN to change your IP (Tunnel Bear, free and easy to use) and select USA. Try to get the game on Opera again like that in a private session. Try on your phone and on your PC.
USA link:
https://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/DAYTONA-USA/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410b1d
Another thing you can try:
Set your Xbox to USA or other countries in Settings, browse the store and see if the game is available for purchase.
@Scenes Yes, at least there is a way.
@GlasgowGuy I don't have an Xbox 360 but I've read that some users have to do something to clear the Xbox 360 download queue because it can come to a standstill. That might be your problem. It's a queue related to your account so that would explain why it happens on both Xbox 360 consoles.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/all/download-queue-full-but-nothings-there/15775b01-3013-4509-a150-2f474b71a24b?auth=1
@themightyant OK, I understand.
@KilloWertz fyi I just finally saw FEAR 3 available on my Series X (had it on my wishlist since the last BC update but was “not currently available”) like a week ago for $20 and I bought it asap! If you meant FEAR 2 that was already available for purchase.
@GlasgowGuy I was able to download SpongeBob, Max Payne 2&3 and Red Dead Revolver with no issues on my 360. But what’s strange is I bought FEAR 3 on my Series X but can’t find that purchase on my 360 but you managed to do it so how? I don’t get it 🤷♂️
@joey302 I meant the first one.
Gta 4 plays so rough compared to 5.
@FraserG not in the US at least. In order to purchase DLC for GTA IV, you need to buy them in-game. Otherwise, you'll be greeted with an "unavailable" in the web browser.
@Metalder Good to know, thanks. This sort of stuff is always going to vary based on region 👍
@Banjo- cheers for your help. I got further by trying this workaround but still couldn’t buy the game. Just said page no longer exists. Changed my settings to US browser etc but still no joy.
Appreciate the help though.
@joey302
Think I bought FEAR3 when it reappeared a few weeks ago off the old marketplace on my pc as it was slightly cheaper there than on Xbox.com; it showed up in my purchase history on 360 & re downloaded it from there
Doing a search on the 360 games tile section also tends to show up games & if you can install them
The old marketplace on the 360 has seemed very shaky for the last few years with some stuff I have bought asking me to rebuy it, especially OG Xbox games - Black, Crimson Skies, Gauntlet etc
I just tested this with Prince of Persia. With a UK Xbox account on the US store page and using NordVPN, the Safari browser failed to complete payment and just froze. Once I downloaded and tried the Opera browser it worked and I can download and play the game.
A list of all the backwards compatible games not available to buy on the Xbox One/Series store, but can be purchased on the old Xbox 360 website.
https://www.reddit.com/r/xbox/comments/rajsdy/list_of_delisted_xbox_digital_backwards/
slightly off topic but anyone had any issues with older games that you have bought now showing as you need to purchase it again?
I went to try Vandal Hearts Flames of Judgement which I originally bought at release and it is asking me to buy. Have looked at the old marketplace website wi]hitch is showing as bought.
prince of Persia(cel shaded) need a discount, game + dlc too expensive for now....
how to change 360 region to buy a delist game?
Hi all
I'm a new Xbox user and new to the forum. I recently learned that there was a BangaiO HD for the 360 and that's my favorite game, I wish I could purchase it out get it any way possible but, I think it's really gone forever right?
