Every year here at Pure Xbox, we poll the community about how well you've been managing your Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S storage, and so we're doing the same again for 2025 - in a year where games are getting bigger than ever!
Looking back over the past couple of years, it comes as no surprise that free space appears to have been getting harder to come by. In 2023, for example, 40% of Pure Xbox voters told us that their Xbox Series X no longer had any free space on the internal drive, and the same went for 51% of Series S owners. Those figures increased to 45% and 58% in 2024, indicating that as time has gone on, it's gotten harder to manage our Xbox storage.
The 2024 version of the article was produced in March last year, and as the months rolled on, we started to see some massive games landing on Xbox. In fact, if you think about just the end of last year, the likes of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Stalker 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 were enough to cause a lot of problems for storage space!
Another thing that we always do in these articles is question whether you're using any form of external storage, whether that's in the form of an official Expansion Card or perhaps something cheaper like an external hard drive.
To be honest though, the figures don't seem to change much from year-to-year on this. Around 25-30% of Pure Xbox voters who own an Xbox Series X had bought an Expansion Card by March of last year, and the same goes for Xbox Series S owners. Something that also remains constant is that Xbox owners believe Expansion Cards are too expensive, with 34% of Series X owners and 41% of Series S owners telling us that in last year's poll.
It'll be interesting to see if anything's changed as we go into 2025, perhaps in terms of how many people have decided to pick up some external storage, as well how difficult it's become to stay under that 100% mark. Maybe you've found yourself deleting a lot more games than you used to, simply because there's no other easy alternative?
Whatever the case may be, we're going to throw the exact same polls down below, and we're very keen to see what the results will be. If you have anything else you want to tell us, please elaborate down in the comments section below!

This is what I hate about this generation. The storage devices just don't have enough space. I would love to have my entire collection on a few hard drives connected to my XB. But, no, you have to have a lot of games on the special storage, and a good portion of those games are over 100 Gb each. NVMe is great, but we need 10 Tb storage sizes at a decent cost for it to be useful.
I'm perfectly fine without any external storage device (Series S).
I normally play one or two games at the same time, and even then I still have like 20-30 games installed. Sometimes more.
No expansion card here. I just cloud play games I'm interested in and if I like it then I will download it.
My series x is at most 70% full but I do have a 512gb Seagate card I bought for the series s I used to use before upgrading. I don't really keep games downloaded unless I know I will play them just the couple gamepass games I want to play and the rest of the ones I own and want to play but on series s you need a expansion card the memory is just to low in my opinion and experience.
I usually have two or three games installed: the one I’m playing and one or two extra so I can quickly move on when the main game disappoints.
My series X has a 1 TB expansion card and then I have a 1 TB external drive for BC games and a few other offloaded items.
My main console, my PS5, has a 1 TB M.2 SSD installed and I have an 8 TB external drive with all my PS4/offloaded PS5 games installed.
At the end of the one x era, I bought a 5tb external hard drive, and it has stood me well for that console and now this. It is quick to transfer between them, and it effectively means I get 6 tb of storage.
I had a 4tb seagate external hard drive for 4 years it stopped working 2 months ago so I only have games installed now that I'm playing or jump into occasionally
I currently have 256.8 gb free on my series x with no money to upgrade
I have no problem with the basic storage of my Series X.
Picked up a 2TB card and filled half of it already.
My 4TB HDD died one month ago, after seven years of continuous use. I don't really miss it because my internet connection is very fast and that was a HDD. With a low connection, I'd get a storage expansion card. However, I enjoy games more if I focus on one at a time. I also find very useful the full library menus. It's like having your full collection sorted... and available if your connection is fast.
I have a 4 TB storage plugged into my Series S, but only Xbone and earlier games work on it, so it’s nice but sort of useless for dealing with current gen problems. My Series S hard drive is basically full and it just has CoD on it. I’ve still yet to try multiplayer too, so I’m not utilizing it properly. I play almost every game on the cloud at this point on Xbox.
I can honestly say that downloads and storage space are the two biggest issues with the Series S now that the first party line-up is starting to move in the right direction, but thankfully xCloud mitigates those issues. xCloud literally is the saving grace of Xbox this generation and I’m surprised fewer people sing it praises.
Series x - 72% full (includes 2 tb external hdd)
Series s - 56% (internal only)
Ps5 - 29% (internal only)
Would be interested if a manufacturer could make a hub to allow more than 1 expansion card to be used at once as i have a 2TB & 1TB card and the way cables are clustered around the expansion slot makes it tricky to swap over
Bought one of the cosmic black Series Xs just to have the 2TB internal available rather than the normal 1TB
-5g external HD for XB1 & 360 and like 3 Series games.
-2g Seagate expansion SSD card
-360g internal
All on Series S. Totally maxed out. Once Xbox gave up on the Smart delivery mandate for new titles, it capped really quick. Thanks to some titles like Metaphor at 76g. While PS5 is at 38g. But the combined file size for PS5&PS4 is 76g. Good times. Thx Xbox.
I only really play one or two games at a time so I just delete stuff I'm done with.
The reasons why I had to give up the idea of buying xbox series x are
1 - Not enough storage
2 - Expensive and (for me) useless disk driver
I would have (gladly) buy some xbox series x version without disk driver and with at least 2 TB ssd.
But it is too late since 2024. I'll have a look at next generation consol options.
I hope, sony and microbe-soft won't do the same mistakes that they did it in current generation. Fingers crossed.
(Note: The reasons I have not buy PS5 are
Constantly deleting games to downlaod others then redownloadinggames IV deleted 🤣and repeat over n over🤣😭
I have 3 external hard drives 10tb + 5tb+ 3tb (this is used for emulation and dev mode), 4 expansion cards 2x1tb and 2x2tb , 2 series x consoles and 2nd console has another 5tb hard drive and still i m running low in space
I love the fact that the expansion cards are hot swappable and the console handle over 20 tb of space but it was cheaper if the series x game would run on the external hard drive
Storage is a nightmare. I have an expansion card, which is full and a 4tb ssd external hard drive (Which unfortunately stopped working, annoying considering it's a WD and I had only had it a year, trying to get a replacement has been a pain)
It's a constant battle to keep installing stuff plus some game sizes are huge. Indiana Jones file size is so big, it's the only reason I haven't played it. I don't have the space.
I used to have a 16tb external HDD for my Series X but I got rid of it because it bothered me. Being able to have all of my games stored meant I could never decide what to play and ended up playing nothing. Now I actually choose what to store and and play from there.
98% full. 210 games currently installed, three quarters of them via Game Pass. I have 1TB expansion card, 512GB SATA SSD, and 4TB HDD. I still have 13.5 months of Game Pass Ultimate left on the clock so will be having storage issues for a while longer.
My Series X space is completely empty - I formatted the drive before trading it in to GameStop.
I have about 1.5TB left of 4TB of space on my gaming PC, though!
According to Microsoft, it’s an Xbox, too! 😁
Series X - never had an issue. Maybe once but easily removed some older game that i did not need.
Series s - need to manage space regularly. The most annoying moment where even that I had space for Indy, it forced to pretty much delete everything, download Indy first and then re-download the rest. Crazy.
Was always looking for seagate storage to went on sale but it still expensive.
Do not really recommend series s 512gb in 2025 - not enough space and it barely handles new games with 1080p/30fps.
Series S 1Tb is too expensive.
I would say even go refurbished series s just to save or go with series X white digital.
Well the Series S is not a bad console but there are two small issues. First no disc drive, minor since it hard to find Xbox games anymore, at least were I am. Second the internal storage is limited so you need the expansion card. Any X1 game that has a series version is automatically upgraded to the series version which takes up the limited space on the SSD. But the loading times make the hassle worth it, generally.
Series s was cool for cross-gen until 2023 or so.
I like series s but honestly would only recommend used/refurbished on sale for 512gb only for people who absolutely dont care and want to play “some” games.
For sure dont go for 1TB SS as its overpriced.
I feel like it does not have enough power (or devs dont optimize) for most new releases. Again regardless of is it a lack of power problem or developes that dont want to optimize for SS its just a fact that you will be getting subpar experience.
Get a series X digital or PS5 on sale that would be my advice.
5tb usb drive works great for me
Nowadays I am much more honest about what games I might ACTUALLY play in the next few months and mostly only download those. You can still pin a tile of a game to your dashboard or groups if you don’t download it so it isn’t forgotten. It has required a shift of mentality, because with 15+ years of games and Game Pass you can’t realistically have everything downloaded.
Yet even with a 1TB Series X, a 1TB expansion and a 4TB USB HDD I am usually pretty full. I try to always leave at least 200gb on one of the nvme drives to install any new games.
However from time to time I do a bit of a clean up by going to my library, sorting by largest install and either deleting or archiving to HDD any games I don’t think I will play in the next 3 months. It helps for a while.
I have well over 1600 digital games, and have the vast majority installed in 4 different places; the internal hard-drive is full, as is the 2TB official Xbox hard-drive, and then I also have 2 external 8TB hard-drives attached, and they are both over 90% full... 😂
Currently have a 512GB expansion card on a Series X - both are always full.
Also have an external 8GB that contains my entire library of digital games and it is also full.
To say I have a backlog would be an understatement.
Next time someone says it's too much, I'll point them to your comment @Fiendish-Beaver 😂
Damn, How many games are you all playing?
I usually play 2-4 at a time, still have about 15 games installed in oth 10gb left over!!
I have the special edition galaxy black Series X on the way with 2TB internal. Picked up a used 1TB expansion card from GameStop a few months back, and use a 2TB external SSD for backwards-compatible games.
Compared to my ps5, there’s plenty of storage on my series X. I don’t see the need to have so many things installed all at once.
Having a WD 1TB expansion for a longer time now.
Also having a 2TB Hdd external for older games.
The internal 800GB from the Series X are way too small.
I'm having games like Gears 5, Halo MCC and Halo 6 always installed. Games are too big these days.
I wish to thank Microsoft for Play Your Own Games on xCloud... and xCloud in general. Several particularly large games that I own... I don't need to install, meaning my storage is only taxed by games that aren't yet cloud-based.
Around 200gb free internal, thanks to having fornite and 1 cod installed. Curious to see if ms uses the same expansion card slot for their next console
I only have a few games at a time on plus an ongoing game like cod. COD goes take up so much but still enough room for 3more games.
Have ‘standard’ disc Series X and 512 gig WD card. (Also 2TB Seagate external HDD which never really use anymore.)
As of now about 10-15% storage available on each. While don’t really try to squeeze in any more (perhaps being paranoid, but read / heard here and there to leave some ‘breathing room’). While my home 400-500 megabit download speed permits me to delete then install quick enough.
@ButterySmooth30FPS Did you purchase 2TB console direct from Microsoft? Both disc XSX variants seem to be out of stock at Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, etc.
@Fiendish-Beaver 1600 titles?? Lose (or win) a bet with a beaver?
@sd7232 Yep, bought it direct from Microsoft on New Year's Eve and estimated delivery is February 11th. There are plenty on eBay if you don't care about being gouged...
I always rotate games. Majority are old Xbox OG to Xbone games so maybe I should buy a smaller hard drive for it
Man, I bit the bullet and bought a 2tb card to complement my 1 tb card. Too many games, not enough storage 😭😭😭
@Decimateh that's been my life since this console's generation lmao
@Sirbrandon100 ye same even on Xbox one was abit like it tbh 😂😭
I rarely use my Series X. I only really got it for better BC of old games. Even then I think it's about 80% full. Ain't no way I'm buying their abhorrently overpriced external drives.
Given 90% of what's installed isn't Series enhanced, I could just connect an old spare SSD in a USB enclosure I suppose.
I have about 15 games installed at the moment on my Series S.
The internal storage is pretty full at 88%. I bought an expansion card last year which is about 54% full. I also use a USB flash drive for the backward compatible games, which is 36% full.
I'm really glad a poll was put on this article. Really like polls more often on this site to be honest.
I keep Fortnite, CoD, MSFS2024, etc. on hand for quick play with friends.
I have gotten into the habit of clearing a single-player title before moving on to the next game because it fills up so quickly, which is a good thing.
My Series X is about 90%, but that's because I'm regularly uninstalling stuff to make space for new games. I've got 2-3 games that are permanent fixtures, and the rest will be deleted as needed to make room for other stuff.
I have so many games it would be unrealistic to think any console could store them all. I'm currently rocking 3 TB total and haven't needed to upgrade again...yet.
I have room for games I'm always playing, games I like to play, and games I'm going to play. I'm fortunate to live in an area where I have gigabit internet so redownloading isn't a struggle.
Out of habit, I uninstall games I don't finish (because I didn't like) and games I finish (and unlikely to play again).
