So, the rumours about Microsoft's slate of next-gen systems seem to have slowed down a little bit lately, after we heard about three potential devices being in the works over at Xbox earlier this month. Skipping over that 2025 partner handheld for the moment and looking ahead to the two widely-reported 2027 systems - do you think either of them will support physical media?
Of course, if one of these 2027 consoles ends up being a handheld device, it's extremely unlikely that it'll support physical media of any kind. While consoles like the Nintendo Switch and older handhelds like PlayStation Vita worked with cartridges, Microsoft has never used this game delivery method - and we can't see them starting now. That's one device likely crossed off the disc drive list, then, but what about the Series X successor?
The home console is where things get a little muddy. You'd think that for backwards compatibility's sake the team will include a disc drive - especially with Xbox Series X supporting four generations of physical media. However, Xbox Series S set a precedent that Microsoft is willing to launch discless consoles, and with handheld devices potentially being more of a focus going forward, the team could move even further into that direction. That's not to mention Xbox's new direction of being a software-first brand, either.
There's also been some discussion recently around Microsoft getting its vast Xbox library working on PC in some form - almost like an emulation layer that would allow the team to have more of its games working on PC-like devices; such as the rumoured 2025 handheld. That reality seems far away though, and potentially an impossibility, but we do know that Xbox has a game preservation team working on forwards compatibility of some kind. If any of this comes to fruition, it'd be another push towards an all-digital future for Xbox.
Here at Pure Xbox, we think (and hope) that Xbox's home console lineage has at least one more disc-based system in the pipeline. It still feels like a huge PR gamble to ditch physical media entirely in the next few years, and even though Microsoft is more than capable of a PR fumble or two, we hope it plays things safe with the Xbox Series X successor. That way, the team would provide some compelling reasons to own multiple next-gen Xbox consoles if all of these reports come to fruition.
Do you think we're getting a disc drive of any kind next generation? Talk to us about this prospect down below.

I think not. I think they'll do what Sony did and offer a detachable drive instead - but only they know their exact stats of how many of their users play digital vs physical. My money however is on no drive - and I'm fine with that as we lean into a digital world.
Sonce Xbox close their physical games division in early 2024 I highly doubt it's going to come with a disc drive.
I mean, the physical version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle came with a diorama of the controls showing an Xbox one controller and not a Series controller, despite it releasing only on current gen. They clearly don't care
I wouldnt be suprised if the consoles are all digital but they offer a "legacy drive" an external device that'll "forward compatible" with future Xbox branded devices and be a huge pain in the 'buns' to get hold of after a year.
Never used the one I have in my Series X so if they go all digital it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Still an option for folks still clinging to physical media isn't a bad thing either so as @Kaloudz says it might be an optional extra next gen.
I still want the disc drive
I have a Steam Deck and MSI Claw and use a usb dvd drive on both for installing and playing old disk-based pc games, works great.
The new Xbox consoles will likely work with this too given that they will be Windows based.
I’m all digital on everything now so it doesn’t bother me.
However they could have priced the series x discless a lot more competitive in the UK.
£429.99 compared to PS5 discless £389.99.
No way there's a disc drive on any Xbox devices going forward. They will allow someone to sell an external one you can plug in but they won't be selling you one. Their entire vision is a digital market, can't play on cloud or a handheld with a disc.
Just make it optional so those who prefer their physical collections are satisfied. I went all-digital during the Xbox One generation—actually, even toward the end of the 360 era, I preferred buying digital. When the Backward Compatibility program kicked in, it was such a benefit.
No it shouldn't people don't really buy or use CDs for music anymore why should it be different for gaming and the best part of games sold now on any console are digital.
Makes no sense to keep going on with physical games because it's a niche market at best now!
Only as an option probably, rather than as standard.
I hope it happens, physically media needs to die. It's pointless at this point.
I've been all digital for about 9 years (since start of xbox one), i understand i guess why people want physical as a collectors item, but never understood the argument "cause now I permanently own the game". I feel like most games require an online connection and can still be shut down or bricked whether you have physical or digital, even single player.
Everything Microsoft is doing is in preparation for a digital only eco system. That includes the next gen hybrid Xbox. As you don't open your hardware platform to 3rd party competitors to appease tougher anti consumer laws around the world. If it comes bundled with a disc drive.
@Rusty_Ruby that’s because the controllers are the same thing, also we don’t know, they might have a option for physical media, they’re going to get backlash from that
to be honest i think it would be possible, but i rather wait and see what happens
It’s all digital going forward. I never used my Series X disc drive not once. I almost sold my Series X and bought the White digital one. I mean it will suck for those that like physical media. But i have no need for it. It lends so much more than just convenience now.
@Rusty_Ruby because the one and series x controller are the same, what are you talking about?
@HonestHick i understand that, but things could change, i understand that your evidence is the fact, that mostly people buy their games digitally, and the companies generally follow the market, but the demand is still there, if anything it would be niche but it wouldn’t full on die
It's crazy to see so many people not care about having physical games. Even if only part of the game is actually on the disc. You pay the same for a digital copy vs a physical but you have nothing that holds any value. I have some Dreamcast games I bought years ago that are now $300+
to be honest, it’s the people who collect, would be bothered by this
@Rusty_Ruby they didn’t actually close it, it was a rumor, i’m not defending the company just pointing out the truth when it comes up
for those that want it sell an addon drive for £100 extra so the option is there for discs both new and old
also, you’re not forced buy digital right now, you can buy physical if you want to, it’s just hard to break a routine, and it’s value is the most important?
also, hot take, i think people take everything about gaming too seriously
If the next xbox is windows based then no. All new games will be only digital and maybe they will have a choice of external disk drives for backwards compatibility.
@OldGamer999 £340 with the astro bot edition right now 😉
Yeah I think no disc drive, if it's going to be more like PC then it's pointless. One that could be attached via USB or something to "digitise" your games or play blu rays would be appreciated though!
I have XSX with blu-ray drive, I have literally many thousands of disc based media from OG XB, X360, XBO, blu-ray, DVD, and CD.
My drives and media collect dust 24 x 7 x 365. The only time I pull out discs is to play OG XB and X360 games that I have not purchased digitally on my OG XB and X360.
For movies and TV I subscribe to services or buy through MS Store to play on Films & TV. For music I have a family Spotify subscription. For games I have been all digital since early in the XBO generation. Would probably never go back to physical media.
I would rather play console games on disc. Hopefully they keep offering a way to buy and play them. If not, then I would be much more likely to purchase my games on pc where the digital stores have to compete with each other plus have sites with cheaper keys.
@OldGamer999 thats only if they cared about the console but they dont
Only nintendo for physical. Their exclusives hold value over years. Xbox discs are almost non-existent. PS discs are popular but costs nothing - which is a good point int terms of savings but not from the collector perspective or value perspective.
Xbox is now into cloud, cross-save across multiple devices so discs are redundant.
I have 2 xboxes in different rooms and I simply have more headache if I buy discs.
I dont own a single xbox disc since I got into xbox one x in 2019
These companies really need to let gamers with physical games 'own' the digital versions ASAP as these disc drives won't last forever. I think this is going to be a major issue in the evolution of gaming.
@donv2135 The Xbox One controller has the part were the Xbox button is located a little bit sunken in while the Series controller doesn't. The Xbox One has a more traditional dpad while the Series has the same dpad as the elite controller. The Series has a share button, the One doesn't.
They function the same, they do the same stuff, but they don't look the same, and when I buy a game that's exclusive to the Series console I expect for the image on the game case to look like the controller for that console, even if they work the same as the last gen
@donv2135 my bad, the rumor was so massively reported and it generate a lot of talk on socila media that I must forgotten that it actually didn't
@Coletrain thats the great deal. and astro is GOTY. I agree with this and believe its the best game this gen so far.
So a customer comes to store to learn that less popular console is out of stock, and on top of that noticeable more expensive than ps5 and ps5 comes with the great game on top.
like how is this supposed to work?
@Millionski I don't know. At this point I've stuck with series x because I prefer the controller and I use MS rewards to get discounts on digital games, but there's no denying that we need some Comms from MS soon about the direction!
If it’s a ‘PC’ with steam (which I doubt) then no it won’t have a drive.
Because no one will buy off the Xbox store it will only get use for GPU, everything will be bought on steam.
If it doesn't it won't be the end of the world since I have the XSX now which I'll likely never get rid of since it's a nice DVD player for me
@donv2135 it’s already niche now. Some games not even launching physical copies. Most major retailers barely carry copies. So once they fully stop like they did with movies and music it’s over. Which again i am not saying i am for or against. I don’t use physical media but for those that do it does suck that it is largely dead. Nintendo still has a healthy physical media spilt, but Xbox and PS are above 80% pushing 90% digitally. The market won’t spend money on less than 10% of the player base.
@RiverGenie I think that's going to be the safer bet and I think it makes the most sense based on how digital we are these days.
@HonestHick, well, if you convinced the all digital future is all but confirmed that’s fine, i’m not going to try force you to see it otherwise, just i’m seeing it from a neutral perspective, it could happen that way, but things aren’t necessarily set in stone
@HonestHick also i see dvd is making a comeback, i’m not saying you’re right or wrong, we’re just going by the general consensus
I expect them to take a Sony approach. The disc drive will either be sold separately, or part of a more expensive bundle. Or both lol
@armondo36 I’m expecting that at least
now we can just play games and deal with it until we reach that point, and i seriously doubt the compaines would just do that, that could get them boycotted to bankruptcy
it’s okay to be concerned but too much concerned can sour your mood
also, i think we don’t have to act like stockholders
Difficult to know for sure - after all, MS has been offering All-Digital Hardware since the 360 era and with less and less Physical releases and sales - let alone all the plastics and other resources used in manufacturing and distribution, Discs maybe obsolete for new games - especially if they have limited Storage capacity and games get bigger.
Its also about sustainability and environmental impact. They may decide not to offer a Disc Drive because of those reasons too.
I'd hope that they offer a Disc Drive or at least the option to add a Disc Drive for Backwards Compatibility. Alternatively, I'd like the option to 'convert' Physical to Digital - some way to transfer the Licence from Disc to my Account so I don't have to 'repurchase' Digital or lose access should Disc Drives become obsolete...
With Discs being nothing more than a Licence Key to access games installed on your System - you aren't playing the game from the Disc, its only on the disc to 'deliver' it to your Hardware (like Downloading) and often not 'playable' without some Downloads (patches, bug fixes, additional content/assets etc) - or even the 'version' for your Hardware (with Direct Storage downloading & installing the version specifically for you) - particularly with Cross-gen releases that may have the XB1S version, the 'smallest' version on the Disc. Discs also tend to have the 'pre-release' which can be months old code, not the 'version' you play day 1 and certainly not the final version of the game. Cyberpunk 2077 is 'pointless' to own on Disc as the game is so far away from the current version!!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner It could work in a way steam OS hanles it. Basically when launching the pc-xbox you will see more or less same xbox OS with your collection and games and to access steam you will have to reboot or switch to Windows and then the experience is not that fluent.
Basically they will make Xbox experience more friendly than Windows + steam experience. I dont believe they want to put steam somewhere on front page and make it super accessible as its against their benefit.
And play anywhere feature on top of that so it makes sense to buy thru MS store if you have other devices.
But again all speculations at this point.
@donv2135 I would not call 30year old nostalgists buying dvd's a "comeback". same as vinyl couple of years ago. Its all enthusiast market that at best 5-10% of total population. Thats basically true with everything else.
My personal opinion is that MS needs to figute out option for those few who wants physical. Maybe a separate drive, could be partner-manufactured.
I think they should stop printing discs at this point but allow sort of "order online your copy" feautre where you pay so they print and deliver you a copy on request. Maybe sounds stupid but we need to get rid of this clutter (cd, dvd, bluray, games, etc) but allow those 3% of collectors to obtain the copy in physical.
Absolutely PS6 will. While OVERALL digital sales are much higher than physical, the odds are stacked in their favour, but physical is still MASSIVE for some titles especially AAA in some territories. e.g.
Xbox is not in the same position, I can easily see them dropping discs... EXCEPT it will cause a big stink, do they want the negative PR at launch of a new console? But I think it will be an optional extra on PlayStation that they will upsell at an even higher premium to try and move people away.
I'm going 100% digital for next gen. Not because I believe it's better but because I don't have the space anymore.
I have hundreds of discs and cartridges across multiple systems I've owned over the last 40 years and can't deal with any more or I may be facing divorce.
I think it's really important to see a disc option for those who want it though.
I keep all of my consoles so any disc only games I'll play on my original Xbox, 360, One X or Series X.
No disc drive and physical games means i end my relationship with XBOX. I will just game on retro systems which still get a physical games now .
In fact that goes for all the big three. the day they go all digital, I'm not interested anymore.
Sayonara it will be .
If it’s truly a PC as all the rumours are suggesting then no, as PC is all digital.
If they go all digital I hope they increase the HDD size. 2TB is nothing (in comparison to the size of games, my switch holds hundreds of games per 1.5TB microsd).
I think the best bet is to just make two versions one with, one without. What's the point of forcing people to do something if they don't want to. Xbox is hurting enough as it is they can't really afford to be picky
I buy all my games physical - so I hope at the very least they have detachable drive. I honesty won't be surprised of any outcome at this point, I'm just happy they're going to make another Xbox, I like the PS5 (for the exclusives) but the UX/UI and features on Xbox (I'm looking at your quick resume) are SO much better.
at the end of the day, we don’t know until they announce it themselves
@donv2135 I honestly hope dvd and physical media is making a comeback. I don’t think only digital is the smartest thing for the consumer. Sure digital has its perks and thats why i use it. But i ain’t sure i trust it fully and for movies i would perfer to have a disc truth told. But i am just not sure we will see PC, Xbox and maybe at some point PlayStation ever supporting physical as gamers are largely all digital these days. Nintendo likely sticks with physical for a while tho. Time will time. But rumors are not many brands even make disc drives any more. Which makes sense, they aren’t in vehicles no more, no laptops have them anymore and consoles are slowly phasing them out. Once Sony, LG and Panasonic quit making them it’s all digital then. I still think people should have a choice personally.
I am really sick and tired of paying additional 100 $ for the disk drive I do not use.
Not to mention;
This would definitely ruin a lot for me, if the next XBox doesn't have a disc drive, since most of my games are on disc.
But if they are working on the next round of backwards compatibility, it would be absolutely dumb, not to offer a disc drive.
@ozkrmz thankfully, the world doesn't spin around you.
Dear my friend @Nintendo4Sonic
I am also happy that world does not spin around me.
I am only a mere one, among the hundreds of millions of gamers in our world.
I am not saying (as I never did) physical copy of games must die.
I got close to 90-95 box / disc games of Xbox and Xbox 360
But it if we include the counting PS3, PS4, PC disk games, they are close to 200 (not to mention hundreds of DVD and Blue Ray Disk Movies). My shelves are not only filled with science, scienfiction and fantasy books, but also with physical games.
I respect and support the physical media games (despite the fact that I have no more additional room for new games in my house) because, I fear that sony/microbe-soft duo, may abuse gamers via the absence of the physical media.
But, I am sick and tired of paying 100 $ more for the disk drive on each new console.
By the way (as you know) gamers of our world lost their purchasing power. We need, more affordable, lighter, less electricity consuming, less heating, less space accupying consoles and personal computers.
@ozkrmz alright, I get your point and that's OK.
And you are right, my place for physical games isn't infinite as well. But I can't get rid of that, that I want a lot of my games physical. On the other hand, digital is ok as well. Both should be there in the future.
If they can make the physical backwards compatible games digital that can help ps i still have physical games
Nintendo would celebrate if its competitors decided to produce consoles w/o a disc drive bc that means the absolute end of physical games media for said competitors and no competition on retail shelves
I mean, if they do still add a disc drive, it will be more like the PS5 situation where you can buy the drive separately.
Physical media for the dedicates Xbox handheld will probably end up being cartridge-based like the Switch and Switch 2, as well as any past handhelds except the PS Portable.
Zero chance it will have a disk drive and that is the reason series X will be my first and last Xbox system. Just since mid 2021 I acquired 70+ physical games across the 4 generations and happily will stick with the system until I played them all.
Dear friend @Nintendo4Sonic
Colsoles, with and without disk drive, must co-exist.
For now, it is the only way we can be sure that "sony & microbe-soft" duo won't be able to abuse gamers of this world.
We (all end users) are eternal friends, regardsless the type of games we prefer...
I think that MS will move towards largely digital and they will offer physical games for a HD add on drive, since they own the HD DVD technology.
