We're obviously now on the verge of Starfield's release, and we've been seeing a fair bit of discussion in the game's community about whether that one game alone is worth buying a new Xbox Series X or Series S console for.
Ultimately, if you don't have access to a good gaming PC or a reliable Xbox Cloud Gaming connection, it makes sense! With the standard Xbox Series S retailing for £249.99 / $299.99, it's a relatively affordable way to join the fun.
Discussions like these remind us of past Xbox launches that have also inspired fans to go out and buy an Xbox console just based on that one game. The Halo franchise obviously comes to mind, as does Gears. Forza Horizon is another one, and even Microsoft Flight Simulator inspired a bunch of Xbox purchases a couple of years ago.
So, have you ever been in this position? Did you join the Xbox community based on one game? We'd love to know what it was down in the comments section below, and let us know if you think Starfield is worth buying an Xbox for as well!
Have you ever bought an Xbox for one specific game? Tell us down in the comments.

The brand in general for Fable yeah.
Although it’s now mainly for Forza.
I mainly play on PlayStation and Nintendo.
EDIT: I’m not a fan of most xbox IPs pre current gen but Microsoft bought a bunch of stuff I usually bought on PlayStation and Nintendo, I guess I play those specifically on xbox now.
Heck I bought the XSX for 2 reasons. Gamepass and MS buying bethesda.
I'm dating myself here but the game that made me want an original Xbox was the first Rallisport Challenge. I worked near an electronics store that had an Xbox demo kiosk. Rallisport was AMAZING at the time, and I bought my Xbox because of it.
That and the fact I was CERTAIN that Microsoft would have the good sense to buy Sega lol
On a warm and sunny day, I was engrossed in playing Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King on my PlayStation 2. As I completed the game, thoughts of trying out an Xbox began to linger in my mind. I eventually decided to set down the controller, head over to my local game store, and purchase an Xbox. While I didn't have a particular game in mind, I believed that the Xbox's game library offered a more appealing investment. This choice wasn't driven by a single game, but rather a desire to explore the broader gaming experience on the platform.
Bought a 360 just for Lost Odyssey. Have been primarily xbox ever since. 360>xbone>series x. Been gaming since about the mid 80s.
Bought a 360 for Gears of War. I was PS1 then PS2. Towards the end of the PS2 life I found the games struggling a tad, where they weren't on my friends OG Xbox. Eventually he got a 360, which I was blown away by, and I been xbox through and through since.
Like many people, any Xbox I bought, I bought for Halo. Even the Series was for Halo initially.
I bought my OG Xbox because of Halo:CE.
That was the last time I bought a Console purely based on 'one' game as I had made up my mind to buy before the Xbox released but I was sure that it had potential and that more games would release I'd want to play - which also turned out to be the case, so I also considered the potential and long term benefits. I didn't buy 'just' for Halo but it was the Game that convinced me to buy into a newcomer to the console market.
I bought my PS5/Series X for example because they both had BC and so my 'Library' came forward rather than buying because of a single 'new' game - the fact that I had a 'lot' of games I could play also meant that I didn't need a 'game' to convince me to upgrade and didn't even need to buy a Game as well as the Hardware to have 'something' to play on my new Hardware.
Nowadays, you don't even need to buy an Xbox to play 'new' Releases from Microsoft. If you want to play Starfield, you may have devices that can allow you to play without even buying the game - play on Cloud for a month or two to decide if its worth buying Hardware for.
When the xbox 360 came out I was not financially in a place i am today. However when i saw Elder Scrolls Oblivion that was it. I traded in a bunch of games and bought the 360 along with Oblivion Collectors Edition and never looked back. I own all the systems since the Atari 2600 but Oblivion is what prompted me to buy the 360 sooner rather than later.
Ironically I was just thinking about this. I got my OG Xbox for Driv3r... Yeah
On a positive note I got my PS4 for Spider-Man
kind of but not really. i bought a wiiu just to play breath of wild and i bought a switch just to play tears of the kingdom.
i bought my og xbox for dead or alive 3 but also because of the other games like jet set radio future and halo.
360 was my default console buy that gen. dodged xbox one.
seriesx was because of the zenimax buy out , elderscrolls 6 and starfield i wanted and backwards compatabilty sold it to me.
realising ES6 won't be coming out on this console most likely now if it wasn't for BC i would be disppointed. so i don't think starfield would have been enough on it's own.
I guess I could say I bought a 360 specifically to play call of duty 4 after watching my college roommates playing together.
I had nintendo wii and didn't really like it that much and wasn't really playing that or legacy consoles anymore. 360 really brought me back in. Now I'm an every console gamer.
Xbox has been my primary console this gen but I did impulse buy a PS5 to play Stray - and then it ended up coming over to xbox anyway . On the positive side I have enjoyed playing through some of the Sony exclusives like Horizon and GoW so it wasn't a total waste of money.
I bought series s for Hi Fi Rush, its trailer gave me gen 7 feelings and I loved it
Yes. I bought a Xbox 360 specifically for Splinter Cell Conviction. Sold it again once I completed it.
The promise of Halo Infinite is why I came back to Xbox after skipping Xbox One for PS4. It’s been an interesting time since then.
I asked for an original Xbox over a PS2 after seeing 10 minutes of Halo CE. Then, after a 360 got the red ring of death, I bought an Xbox 360 Elite instead of a PS3 for more Halo 3 and the upcoming ODST.
Guilty as charged. Bought the Xbox One X for some 4K GoldenEye 007.
I had all the main gaming consoles back in the 1980's-1990s when consoles were much more affordable than they are now, but I did get the OG Xbox in the early 2000s to try out Morrowind. That style of gameplay was a revelation at the time, and after that I bought the 360 to be able to play Oblivion which was still an Xbox exclusive in those days.
360 for gears of war
The reason I bought a 360 was to play Saints Row. (The very first Saints Row game)
I was a huge fan of SR2 (on the PS3) but the earlier game was only ever released on Xbox. So I found a cheap 360 arcade version.
I bought an Xbox One before buying a PS4, and had already bought a Series X before finally managing to buy of a PS5.
but part of that was because the Series X was easier to get ahold of.
The good thing is that once I had a 360, as well as a PS4 I could buy exclusives for both consoles. Something I continue to do, even now.
The only console that I bought for a specific game was my GameCube and that was for Soul Caliber II.
My friend bought the original Xbox just for Halo back in the day.
i know its been said numerous times, but i bought original xbox for the lan/halo, my friends and i were having good ol lan parties
No, the entire idea is nonsense to me. Sure, there might be a particular game I am super looking forward to, but I am not buying the console for that game and that game alone.
I am a multi console gamer going all the way back to Intellivision, Atari 2600, and ColecoVision. Only console released in the US I didn’t own was the Wii U. I know with each console I buy that by the time that generation ends, I will have gotten my moneys worth in regards to the number of games I played and enjoyed. That’s been true 100% of the time.
I know there will be many games I wind up buying and enjoying for each console i buy, even if I don’t know what those games will be at the time of the hardware purchase. I would never buy a console for a single game.
Bought a 360 for Forza Motorsport. Went to the PS4 at launchday because there was no worldwide release from XBox One and after two months I imported onde for FM5 because there was no racegame for the PS4.
Xbox 360 was mostly for Gears of War and Skate. Series X was mostly for Sea of Thieves and Microsoft Flight Simulator.
I came for Starfield, got delayed and then I left with a 94 game backlog… zero regrets and ready for my intended purpose…
I bought my Xbox One S to play 4K blu-rays because my PS4 Pro didn't. Then I remembered how much I preferred the controller, then Game Pass happened, and the backwards compatibility and now I'm an Xbox guy.
I bought:
My 360 specifically for GTA4
My XBOne X for Red Dead Redemption 2
My PSX for FF7
My PS2 for FFX
My N64 for Mario 64
My Wii U for Mario 3D World
My 3DS for Zelda Link Between Worlds
My Xbox Series X and PS4 are the only consoles I ever bought without any specific game in mind.
My PS3 was given to me as a gift, so was my Wii and Switch. My GameCube was a hand-me-down.
Edit:
My Atari 2600 was also a hand-me-down.
My NES was a Christmas gift, as was my SNES.
I picked up my first 360 because some big JRPGs were announced for it. The Far East of Eden Ziria remake, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata were more than enough to lure me in.
I bought an Xbox one for rare replay
I got my Xbos S for Cities Skylines. Never regretted my purchase.
I was thinking of buying a 360 (landlord stole one I previously / contemporarily had) just for NBA 2K9. (The current and recent iterations of NBA 2K suk IMO.)
Xbox One for Killer Instinct 2013! Everything else I wanted to play was on PC at the time.
I had an Intellivision too, @RIghteousNixon. That was my very first one. I think I was about 19 at the time in 1982, and remember I had a game called Tron: Deadly Discs, and ended up playing until something like 4 in the morning because I was on an amazing run, and you couldn't save. If you stopped, you had to restart! 😂
While I bought it more for game pass as a service Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 2 is what got me interested.
The only console I ever bought for a specific title was my 3Ds for Pokémon X
OG Xbox for Halo Combat Evolved
I saw Forza at Best Buy on the demo and had to get an Xbox One…. That, and I was sold on the entertainment hub concept….
Maybe a 360 ,but those days are far behind xbox at the moment ,they don't really have much that would persuade people to spend over 400 ,im sure starfield will be very good ,maybe in a few years,ps has so many games you can't play anywhere else ,xbox not so much.
I had a PS4 and after wrist surgery I bought an Xbox one because of the controller thumb placements and for forza / forza horizon. Forza horizon 2 is still one of my favourite games. PS5 is my main console but keep the series X for halo and forza horizon. Looking forward to starfield and the new Forza Motorsport to get me back into the Xbox way.
XSeX for Fable (the original)
PS4 for Spider-Man (until I actually played it and it was dog poo)
=NEW= 3DSXL for XenoBlade Chronicles as it was cheaper than getting the Wii version
PS2 for .hack//Infection//Mutation//Outbreak Never got far in Outbreak. never got to Quarantine. life got in the way.
GameCube for Rogue Leader
Wii for Smash Brothers and was letdown after the greatness of Melee
Switch for Breath of the Wild and hated it.
WiiU for XenoBlade X
@Aniscape
What is your avatar picture?
Do you have a bigger picture of it?
@Baler Same reason I got a Series S
You bet i needed that gears off war i just played at my mates house id never seen graphics like that .😍 Amiga days was goneeeeee
I bought an Xbox One because Rise of the Tomb Raider was a timed exclusive. Yes, I am embarrassed.
I got a used 360 to play Halo 3 which never grabbed me. I did put over 500 hours into halo 4 and over 600 into halo 5 multilayer so it all worked out 😆
Hi there fellow gamers,
I actualy bought my OG Xbox mainly so I could play Ninja Gaiden.
Now I did got the system with other games like Shenmue 2, Fable, Dead or Alive 3 and Project Gotham Racing 2.
But Ninja Gaiden was "The Game" I truly wanted to play.
There is another system I bought because of one game as well, and that was the Nintendo Switch.
Just so I could play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are other great games there sure, but that was, once again, "The Game".
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
I bought the OG Xbox so that I could play Jet Set Radio Future, the Xbox One for Dead Rising 3 and I bought the Series X so that I could play Halo Infinite via the Limited Edition console. Although I pretty much exclusively game on PlayStation Consoles, I have the Series X and GamePass so that I can play the Xbox first party exclusives.
For me it was black ops 3, mainly for zombies which was a great game for that mode, then not long after that the Xbox one disc drive became faulty whilst I had really bad download speeds at the time so i grinded that game with nothing else to play on xbox for about three years, I got to the top 1000 range on the leaderboard but then a unlimited death machine glitch for all maps was found, it ruined the competitive flow on the leaderboard so I gave up after that.
I bought a Japanese Xbox 360 just for Operation Troy initially. Only later did I pick up more games.
Bought the series X for gamepass. Was saving up for a PS5 and then I just got won over slowly by gamepass and the back compat. No looking back since then.
I bought an Xbox because how solid and heavy the controller. Feels like I'm holding a gun when playing FPS games. Dual sense 4 was too light and trigger feels it might break
Xbox 360 for Mass Effect 1.
Was living with crappy roommates and no AC and working a job I hated. I had a tiny 720p TV that I put on my only piece of furniture and hooked up the Xbox. Every day after work I sat on the floor with a beer and my controller and was in sci-fi bliss.
I was trying so hard to be patient in 2021 to not buy the Xbox Series X. Everywhere was sold out, and I vowed to wait until December of that year.
Then, I got tired of the Destiny 2 load times on my One, so I gave up in April. I chose to bite the bullet and get the Series X through All Access. The moment I downloaded and played Destiny 2, I was floored. The 20 second plus load times dwindled to just 3 or 4. It was a purchase I knew then I wouldn't ever regret. I still haven't.
Yes! The Forza Horizon games are the number one reason I own an Xbox. Best games in my favorite genre. Have had hundreds of hours playing other games via Game Pass but FH4/5 compelled me to get one
Bought my OG Xbox for Morrowind the 360 for Oblivion been Xbox ever since. Loved fable one and two really hoping for their new one. I would have bought into it now for starfield.
I was quite happy with my Xbox One X until Microsoft Flight Simulator was deemed exclusive. I went with a Series S and then the X-screen for traveling. I fully admit to both loving the low power use but hating having no Disc Drive.
Bought a 360 for Virtua Fighter 5 Online.
I bought a 360 just so I could play Oblivion. All of the podcasts I listened to would spend weeks talking about it and 1UP Yours literally banned themselves from talking about it after a few weeks since they had to move on to new games. Even now, I love to play it, especially with how nice it looks on a Series X.
I bought the Series X for Microsoft Flight Simulator but it's probably had as much if not more playtime than my PS5 by now. Gamepass has been excellent to catch up on Xbox One games I missed last gen not to mention excellent indie titles and now Starfield and the Bethesda acquisition has more than made it worthwhile.
@Spider-Kev found it on this website. I will never own so decided to make my avatar from it.

@Aniscape
Thats not bad, thanks!
Big Platinum Games fan so a huge part of buying the Xbox One was Scalebound! That went badly.
My gf got me an xbox series s because I couldnt get a hold of a ps5 on release.
Now I got a Series X and it gets the most play by far, all because of GPU and a whole bunch of 1st party games I never played before.
I bought the original Xbox because I wanted to play Jet Set Radio Future and I wasn’t disappointed. I then ended up buying about 40 games for the system that generation. That was my favorite gaming generation.
I can see Starfield selling systems, and it looks like Xbox has the games this gen to push even more sales of the Xbox/gamepass. Looking forward to all these releases.
Series X my first Xbox. I bought it for Game Pass. Always had Playstation an had Switch too an always wanted to try Forza. If i didn’t buy Series X couple year ago i buy now for Starfield. I’m real excited for that!! I love excited!!!
Cyberpunk 2077.
Always tempted by new consoles but what really drove me to picking up the OG Xbox was seeing Championship Manager available for the Xbox. However, seeing preview footage for the upcoming Splinter Cell as well as gameplay for PGR, Jet Set Radio Future and Panzer Dragoon Orta pretty much sealed the deal.
Phantasy Star Online New Genesis brought me over to Xbox One after being PS4 exclusive last gen.
My kids both had Xbox Ones but I didn’t buy one for myself until I wanted to binge that game.
OG xbox for jet set radio future👍👍👍👍
OG Xbox for PGR, even though it was basically a remaster of MSR which I had on my fairly new Dreamcast. GameCube for Killer7.
Yep, they got me twice. Once on the original Xbox with Chunky and Chubby's Peanut Butter Dreams and Chocolate Screams and once on the Xbox 360 with Trippin Ballz in Atlantis. They won't get me again, I don't care if the console has an LSD dipped skin on it or not.
I bought a 360 just for Mass Effect. Well got my money's worth with the amount of times I played the game.
Yes, I owned all PlayStations and bought my first Xbox (Series X) last February for Starfield. So far it wasn’t worth it next to my PS5 but things will definitely change from this week.
I bought the Series X for Starfield. If it wasn't for Starfield, I would have gotten a PS5 instead. I love Bethesda games, and I didn't want to go without them this generation.
The two games I've spent the most time with on the Series X so far were Octopath Traveler and Persona 4 Golden, and I don't think of those as traditional Xbox games. I'm looking forward to Cities Skylines 2, Clockwork Revolution, Avowed, and Outer Worlds 2, but none of those would have shifted the needle the way Starfield did.
I had played each Xbox from the beginning but never owned one until I bought the Xbox 1 specifically for a game that ended up being cancelled which was ScaleBound. I enjoyed stuff like the Gears of War remake and Ori so I stuck around. Now my Series X is my 1A after my Switch
Yep, sold my PS5 and bought a Series X for Starfield, plus what they had lined up for the future such as fable and avowed.
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
An interesting question but no I haven't. For PlayStation or Nintendo either I have at least 5-10 games in mind first.
When I find an OG Xbox though to complete the Xbox set (not all revisions like the Xbox One S/SAD or the 360 Slim got the rest though) I'd say Forza Motorsport 1, Blinx 1 & 2, Voodoo Vince I own but not played as can't (PGR1&2 I did via 360 BC and those were fun, PGR2 and 3 are like my top arcade racers now). Some others maybe like Whacked. Some third party platformers like Malice or Dr Muto, I did see Brute Force in retro store at one point but had no idea if it was 360 compatible but it's gone now so oh well I'll try again next time. That's the problem is without an OG Xbox I have to constantly look up the compatibility list, sure 501 but that's still lot I have to compare still. 51 on Xbox One doesn't cut it even if they play well I don't come across them.
Honestly I get most consoles after their relevance these days (Switch in 2021 as the latest really most others I got from 2017-2023 were much older).
In terms of family buying them not sure really we got a bunch of games with them I can't remember which. Like sure OG Xbox parent got Halo, Fable, Forza Motorsport 1 I guess (I got to play Blinx and Scaler, Forza all games I had to remember and uncover again from memories) for it no doubt but otherwise hmm just got third parties and same with 360 I guess.
Can't remember why we got a PS2, DVD support sure but games not clear of 'particular games' other than just a platform for the family to play.
But I had a OG Xbox for the time, not anymore and need one. 360 had for a while got a bunch of games with it mid-gen, but PS3 for Resistance pretty sure and well Ratchet Tools of Destruction's demo blew my mind back then Rift Apart does not now with how they structure them, grrr.
Xbox One just happened to get for I guess Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse Son of Rome and barely used I still only sometimes use it/collect for it. Series X family just got it and played a few things on it but technically Starfield besides what cloud testing/a few gamepass experiences but barely used and sits there as much if not more than the Xbox One did under the tv stand.
For me I'd say out of the consoles I bought myself from 2017-2023 then yeah I usually bought them for backwards compatibility/library access to open up collecting doors really besides those I was interested in just any I also stumbled across.
Like an OG DS for GBA games, a 3DS to access it's library, Vita same thing, Wii U the same (to fill in the gap of motion controls/dual screens I missed and well also for BOTW on a cheaper priced console beside Bayo 2 and well the virtual console).
Switch for Prime 4/Bayo 3,
N64 to get an experience of it then only PS1/PS2 as the oldest really.
Never seen or experienced a Saturn other than videos, even then experienced Jaguar via Atari 50 that's literally why I bought it as yeah the history but the Lynx/Jaguar and I guess the 5200/7800 games but mostly Jaguar games,
PS Move, a third PS3 to play them as my second one won't use wifi the chip is stuffed but works otherwise for an offline console.
But as a reason to get the consoles I mean I got a Switch for Japanese niche games and Nintendo first party I do have interest in (I mostly banked on Bayonetta 3 and it was.... ok... and Prime 4 but got other games in the meantime that do the job for my list).
Vita I started particular then got the first parties and a few third parties I wanted, not all yet.
Wii U I got BOTW/Bayonetta 2 and just collected whatever of first party/the ignored Devils Third and Tank Tank Tank and my favourite games on the console.
The moment I saw Sonic Unleashed got FPS Boost for Series X, that's when I got mine.
Other than that, I had a 360 and OG Xbox for my retro collecting. May one day consider an Xbox One just to try the exclusive Kinect games. You know, for days where I'm feeling stupid.
The short answer is not really; and never for something Microsoft 1st Party when exclusivity was a factor
i was so invested in my PS2 Library I didnt much care for getting an Xbox - my friends had them and every game I was interested in playing they had and we did together.
Xbox 360 I jumped over for Bioshock, Dead Rising (both exclusives at the time) and what was reported to be a better Rock Band experience.
Xbox One I got a Holiday Bundle in 2014 in anticipation of the following June's Arkham Knight
The Series X I got because of All Access. I make good use of it, but it wasnt NEEDED. it was that I could pay 40 cdn a month for it and Game Pass im already paying a little less than 1/2 per month instead of 700 cdn plus tax
@Kaloudz I’m a big MMORPG fan so for me it was a good game.
However, it’s not as good as the originals (for me at least). It gives some nostalgic kicks, the intro screen and music, sounds on the menus and things all bring those feelings back, but don’t expect it to be the same as the original. It’s open world now and has faster paced combat and it’s just a fun game to spend some hours with. But if you get hooked, be warned as it’s very grindy in the endgame. I didn’t really invest too much time on the end game though as I didn’t want to get burnt out.
I’d still rank the Dreamcast/GameCube PSOs as two of my favourite games of that generation. This game isn’t up there with them but it’s free and is probably worth your time if you liked the previous games.
I sold my GameCube and bought the original Xbox just to play Morrowind, so yeah, of course I think Starfield is a game that will convince people to buy an Xbox.
I had several xbox’s over the years but never bought one for one particular game
Yes. A 360 for GTA IV in 2008.
Silent Hill 2 on the OG Xbox, Forza 2 on the Xbox One, Halo on the Series X.
@ApostateMage my son bought that game when it first came out. It didn't look like a game I would like but a couple years later I put it in and didn't stop playing until I unlocked every achievement. Mass Effect is a great game.
Resident Evil 5 | RED Limited Edition

Nah I always buy a Playstation for one game and end up regretting it. Xbox for everything else.
I'm buying an Xbox for Starfield
I jumped to the original Xbox after the death of the Sega Dreamcast. Never looked back.
With Series X its been mainly for Forza till now, but Im hoping to spend several months in Starfield soon.
Ive always bought as many gaming platforms as I can, and xbox has brought me some real winners since the original box, I owe them some loyality for all the good times they've given. In recent years Ive chosen to play more on the other system and simply use my xbox to get value from gp, but I suspect Starfield and Motorsport to be the start of that equation changing and suspect Ill be playing xbox more often.
I bought the 360 for Tales of Vesperia, but after that I bought and played some other exclusive JRPG's.
Still a shame that Lost Odyssey is still a stuck with Xbox, to me it's the final true Final Fantasy and not enough people have played it.
Yep! Bought the OG at launch specifically for Dead or Alive 3.
The original Xbox had a bunch of games I was interested in (Dead or Alive 3, Halo 1, Project Gotham Racing, Splinter Cell among them) but I didn't buy the console until 2004 after its price drop to $180 and the release of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay. That was the game that made me decide I needed the console for sure. Xbox 360 I bought just two weeks after its launch because there were a lot of day one games I liked and a ton of future releases I knew I'd want. Xbox One and Series X were purchased because I'd become a fan of the brand from the earlier gens.
Yeah halo and other games but not the starfield.
