There was a lot of talk when the Xbox Series X and Series S released that the 1TB Seagate Expansion Card was both too expensive and not really necessary for most players, but almost 18 months on, that perception is starting to change.
Sure, we're all in agreement that it's a costly card no matter whether you go for the 512GB, 1TB or 2TB variant, but with so many games now being optimised for the new systems, they're definitely worth considering if you can afford one.
That said, even if you're running out of space, you don't need one of these things — games that are optimised for Series X and S can be stored on any old cheap external hard drive, but the problem is that you can't actually play them off there, as only original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games work off an external HDD or SDD.
With all of this in mind, we're interested to know whether you've forked out for an Expansion Card yet, or whether you're still holding off for now. Have you splashed some Microsoft Rewards points on one? Did you treat yourself at Christmas? Or are you happy with your current scenario and don't see yourself ever needing one? Tell us!
Let us know whether you've bought an expansion card for your Series X and/or Series S down below.

I received a bonus in my job last year and decided to treat myself to the 1GB expansion card. Between that and the internal storage I’ve felt no need to buy anymore memory, at least not yet. Hoping to do the same for my PS5 soon, though as readers no doubt know that’s a little more complicated than it is on Xbox.
I have. Kinda regret it. Bought 1 TB one. Not happy since you DO NOT get full 1 TB of space. System files, etc, takes up fair amount space on it.
Very disappointed.
@Nightcrawler71 Yeah, I'm very thankful how easy the process is on Xbox. Plug and play, no messing around.
All my bonuses have been spent on my house so... nope.
My choice: "No, I haven't bought one yet, but I will do at some point".
Not really seen the need to really. I’m XSX is sitting at 75% disc usage. I wouldn’t say I’m frugal, I’m just happy to delete old games and download them again if I have to.
Got one with my MS rewards, lovely! The way I like to set up my XBox is to download every gamepass game I think I may want to try at some point so it's ready whenever that is, so more storage was a must. Even though realistically I'm only ever playing up to a few games at a tune
@Nightcrawler71
I installed this in my PS5, as long as you can use a screw driver and have the strength to remove a panel it takes about 10 minutes.

Not with the laughable prices. I can buy a SSD that is faster and cheaper than it for my PC. I'm not gonna pay a premium price for outdated storage. To add insult to injury, this is also with a far superior brand(Samsung) versus the bottom of the barrel brand Microsoft chose, Seagate. I'm don't know of a single self respecting person that will put a Seagate in their machines. Even the data centers I've been associate with shunned the brand.
I think the worst part of it all was the justification of using proprietary being faster. When in actually, majority of time, the PS5 loads faster with its off the shelf drive.
Should have went with a more traditional approach like the PS5 where you can swap out.
At the end of the day, 1TB wasn't enough on the One X, let alone the Series X. And they knew that when they went with a proprietary system.
Not yet, waiting for the 2TB one to be available (seems to be US only at the moment).
@Grumblevolcano
2tb is available in the UK and as been for a while
Try Very it is one of many.
No need for me. FH5, Warzone, Halo, Sea of Thieves and Hades are always installed. Anything else I delete once I have finished with it. Normally sat with 2-300gb free space.
It's nice for people who want it but storage is not an issue for me. I might need one in the future as game sizes get bigger but for now I'm happy.
@InterceptorAlpha
Agreed, the Series expansion drive is a scam. I'm in Canada, so the Xbox one is $280 and a comparable PC drive is $130. I want more storage, but can't bring myself to pay that much for a relatively slow drive
No but i'm planning on getting one when prices drop. Probably with MS reward points.
The rumour is that the Seagate exclusivity ends after 2 years.
It needs to because the pricing is frankly ridiculous right now and sorely reminds me of the PS Vita proprietary cards.
MS have been so good on the pro-consumer front in recent years this feels like an aberration, but a very costly one. The fact you can get the same sized but faster storage for PS5 for almost half the cost just isn't right.
The only advantage these cards have is plug and play convenience. But at this high cost how many are most users really going to buy? For 99% it will be install once and forget.
@Grumblevolcano They have been available in the UK from specific retailers for a while but be be prepared to pay a premium.

Bought mine (1TB ) last month for use with my Series S
Nope. And I probably never will unless the price drops immensely. I just plugged in my 5 TB external HDD and move around games when I want to play them.
I have a 1tb. Debating trading in my ps4 pro in my guest room and my 1tb to get a 2tb
Dont play enough on my xbox and mostly just replay 360 titles so not really a need for me
Yes got one in September for just over £160. Worth every penny, especially now I have both S and X Consoles. The hot swapping is a great feature.
I bought one but ended up returning it. It was really nice and convenient but i couldn't justify keeping it at the time. I'll end up getting one eventually but I'm still holding out hope for prices to go down or cheaper 3rd party options.
1 TB internal storage is more than enough for me. Especially, with this insane prices. You can always delete stuff.
Ordered a 2TB one and when I got it the box had been resealed and inside was a used 1TB card. Not best pleased but the person who sent it back for a refund and upgraded their 1TB card for free obviously is. Currently don't have a card as have to send it back and wait for a refund before getting another one although now apprehensive in case I get screwed again.
@Dezzy70 I wouldn't trust Very. That is who screwed me over and have had my return for over a week and claiming they haven't got it.
I bought the 1 TB. Overpriced, sure, but the ability to hot-swap it between my Series S and X has been pretty damn nice.
I don't have one, and don't plan on getting one as the price is bonkers. My Series X is about 75% full, and as time goes on and games get bigger it'll need the space, but for that price I'll just delete something I'm not playing, or offload it onto a smaller external drive. I think it's Series S owners who'll feel the pinch with half the memory.
I hope that a 3rd party solution will become available in the future, or Microsoft and Seagate mightn't see the need to reduce the price in the future if memory gets cheaper.
I bought 2 X 1TB ages ago, for my XSX and XSS. Thinking about upgrading to the 2TB on both of them now, do I sell the old cards or keep them loaded with older games that won't be updated? Hmmmm
@XxEvilAshxX I've got two Series X. I personally just install the same games on both.
I bought it with the console. Figure the longer I have the additional space the more the value over the life of the console.
Had a series s, picked up 1TB for cheap($185).
Got a series x now. No "regerts".
@Moto5 to be fair it’s not so much the installation as it is making sure I buy one that is compliant.
@Nightcrawler71 most drives these days are advertised as PS5 compliant. There is also a trend of slightly cheaper drives built specifically with PS5 usage in mind..
I got mine 1TB for about 120$ on a sale.
Also, I voted "No, I haven't bought one yet, and I'm not planning to" due to crazy prices.
I bought the 1TB one for 200usd, totally worth it and super necessary for the Series S, it changes drastically the console experience, now it really feels like a next gen console experience, 364gb is not acceptable on 2022
They're too small and too costly IMO. If I'm going to increase the storage I want to do it by more than 1TB; when I can get at least 2TB for signficantly less than the current price I may then get one.
For now, an external USB SSD is cheap, and is quick for moving titles back and forth.
I haven’t bought one yet, but I will buy the 2TB one (unless even larger sizes are announced before I get to it).
I had gift cards and after a small sum from myself, I snagged the 1 Tb version. Totally worth it. You do get 920 Gb on it to utilize. Not sure what is put on there by the XSX, but still the 920 Gb is greatly welcome and oh so brilliantly simple to use. I was also surprised at the small footprint of the card itself. Not sure what I was expecting, but it was smaller than that expectation.
@Enigk
Thanks for for the heads up.
Also how come only Very are selling them 2tb
In the UK and no one else.
@Medic_Alert You do know that USED space footprint is most likely different on every HDD/SDD/SD card, thumbstick drive, etc ever created right?
And EVEN BETTER if know going take up 250 MB, 375 MB, 250 GB, etc would it be really that hard to make the storage device just that much bigger and problem solved. Right?
@InterceptorAlpha Agree with all of your points. 100%
Just out of principle I couldn't bring myself to buy one at the current price. If they reduce close to half the price, or an adapter is released that allows off the shelf SSDs then sure.
I mean, they're over twice the price of a good WD NVME, it's absurd. As much as I like the SeriesX and GamePass, they are taking the piss with the storage.
Luckily storage has been surprisingly OK on my SeriesX, with the help of a 1tb USB drive. I have loads of older games and 360 games stored on the external drive, and the internal drive still has a good 250gb left for new games. Seems fine.
Holding off. Most of my games are Game Pass games, and I do spend most of my time on PS5. Would be nice to have the extra space at my immediate disposal, but I can continue to do the shuffle for now
I’ve really no need for one. I have 6-8 games installed at anyone time and have around 400Gb free. That’s the faves I keep going back too. A racer. A shooter. A fighter and whatever the new hotness is.
It’s great the expansion is available especially for those with slow internet (I have gigabit) but just never felt the need. A buddy bought one and filled it with games he doesn’t play tho. He just likes to have them downloaded. Each to their own.
I don't know why you would need one. I find 1 TB is more than enough for the 3 to 4 games I'm currently playing, plus some family favourites. If there's another game I want to play, I simply get it installing before I go to bed, and it's ready to go the next day.
I feel like for many who do get it it's storing games you're not really playing, so what's the point?
@jonmac547 If you have the Series S I could see why, but not on the Series X
@Medic_Alert From the very article you linked.
"However, it's not just the OS files that take up space out of the box. Most operating systems include extra apps that you may or may not want. This includes everything from Windows 10 bloatware to useful built-in macOS apps like GarageBand."
And the whole nobody ever making the difference up nor was it the question/point being made. You simply just want to argue for sake of arguing. Not worth my time. Blocked. Peace!
@Dezzy70 I am sure I saw them on Amazon but Very were offering 10% off if you put it on 12 month interest free so that is what made me bite as I didn't have to pay now and it was cheaper.
I would like a 1tb one but I won't pau above 100€ for it so I will wait. But it have to delete games all the time even though I have a hdd storage device for older games
Yeah I bought a 1TB expansion about a week after I got my Series X. Would have bought a 2TB but they waited too long to release it.
I started with the 1tb when the console launched, but recently got the 2tb from very.co.uk which lets me pay in three instalments. Gave the 1tb to my son for his XSS so we’re both pretty happy.
i found a guy selling one on offerup for 150, talked him down to 110 by promising to buy it on the spot. so i lucked out there.
@Beagle
Ok thank you. Won’t buy one yet as I stay economical with memory.
@Enigk
All those that are young and won’t no this comedy sketch, look up and watch “egg box 360”
@Agnostic WERD UP to that. Sure it takes a bit to do that, but its way easier than a redownload and dropping $219 when you already have had this likely since the XB1 days!
yeah. bought one when i got my series S. now i've got an XSX as well with that 1TB card and a 4GB HDD. i offload any X/S game onto the HDD when i'm not actively playing it and for any older games that don't benefit from the M.2 speeds.
I’ve bought two one terabyte cards.
No need when I can uninstall other games
Way to expensive. I'll just keep juggling the content I have installed when needed.
I live in Japan and the prices of the 1T external drive has crazy prices.
Basically they are impossible to find and if you find some they sell it for a minimum price of 30.000 yen which is almost 300 Dollars.
No, Im content with my 12TB external drive, moving games as I play through them. My only concern is downloading them when I buy them so I can play even if internet bleeps off.
Purchased a 1TB one this week, but only because I had a stack of points through my Telcos reward program that allowed me to get it for $60AUD rather than the $360RRP. If I didn’t have a steep discount I’d have continued to archive to a standard drive.
Bought the 1TB. Love it.
I debated for a long time whether to get one or not, I have a Series S. It is overpriced, but I got a 1TB version on eBay for £144. I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford it, but I'm pretty cheap by nature
I had an old internal SSD hooked up via a USB3 caddy and that worked well enough. However, I switch between EA sports games most of which are all series X/S optimized, and Forza, and several other games that are optimized. And when I play with my kids, we all play different games together that are optimized, and I just didn't have any room left internally, so was going to have to start swapping.
Given that I have three kids and very limited gaming time, I decided I'd rather spend my gaming time gaming, rather than transferring games from external to internal.
I want to pick one up for additional storage & emulation.
Almost got the one 1TB but then read that the 2TB apparently is much faster. So I will wait a bit longer, for a discount on the 2TB.
Like many people, I wish the expansion cards were cheaper. If the 512GB card was around £75 I'd have bought one already and then lamented not springing for the 1TB 😂
I tend to play 1 single player campaign game with a 1or 2 side games. I thought the Series S' internal SSD would be enough for that with a 5TB external HDD for cold storage. But seeing shiny things on game pass and a tendency to revisit old games means I run out of storage pretty easily. Transferring games is fine if you're moving a 20+ hour single player game from your backlog to play for a week or 2. But it's a pain when you want to play Forza Horizon 4 for an hour.
I have an external SSD that I put together using an NVMe one from an aging gaming PC I no longer use. I use it for Xbox One games and transferring the odd optimised title. It's 512GB and pretty quick too with a 100GB game transferring in around 5 minutes. I'm toying with buying a 1TB one (around £100) instead of an expansion card. However an expansion card would be more convenient but unless the 1TB one drops below £150 it's a no for now.
I still can't even get a darn Series X!
Originally i thought i would need one and was holding out for a sale...but now I'm pretty sure i don't need one. I'm fortunate enough to have unlimited internet and unfortunate enough to have very limited gaming time so it takes along time to get through most games. Currently i have 130GB free space and that's with multiple games on the series x that I haven't played at all or in a very long time.
Maybe in a few years i could get one still if prices drop significantly and game sizes increase massively, but for now i don't have a need for it.
No need. Way too expensive but I've more than enough room on internal memory to keep me going. I move games on to a regular hard drive when I'm not using them for overflow and last gen games are stored on that too.
Got me a 1TB Expansion Card, two months after release of the XSX. It was 170€ back then. Prices for these things go up and down regularly.
Had a 1TB since launch and just bought a 2TB. Now both my Series X have one.
Also just installed a 2TB internal expansion for my PS5.
@Beagle you should never pay more than £0.10 per GB. That said, if you're okay with the extortion, £125 is the standard price for the 512GB expansion.
Bought one day 1. System wouldn't be half as fun without it. Even with it space is a little cramped. But it's not nearly as bad as PS5 without having added a drive yet. It's like the digital version of swapping discs, only it takes longer.
Bought a 1TB at launch with my Series X. Actually got a decent deal on it because I had some coupons - $180, and I don't regret it at all. Has kept me from ever worrying about storage. I'm also glad I didn't have to mess with waiting around for them on PS5, and having to buy third-party heat sinks, and all that jazz. I'm just fine with how XBOX Series X did it, it is the definition of plug and play.
@Nightcrawler71 Well I sure hope you don't eel like you need more memory, because one other kinda downfall to the Xbox Series X besides the memory cards only made by Seagate, they also only have one port for you to put a memory card into your system. So you could potentially upgrade to the 2 TB card but you cant just buy another one and add it on top
Nope, not enough games of interest to fill up what I have
Got the 1tb for £125 on a Amazon flash sale.
Still loathe to spend that amount but with gamepass and the otpimised X/S scarlet based games that only run from internal it's pretty much a necessity imo as I tend to dip in and out of games regularly.
Add in the multiplayer aspects and I'm loathe to delete something once I've downloaded it on my crappy bt connection.
