Pure Xbox had only just relaunched when Gears Tactics made its debut on PC back in April 2020 - it's been (nearly) five long years since then, and we still haven't seen a new Gears game since... although E-Day seemingly isn't far away.
The Coalition's focus is obviously on that mainline origin story right now, but is a Gears Tactics 2 in the plans, and would you be interested in seeing it? The original was mainly developed by Splash Damage, and that studio unfortunately suffered a cancellation for its planned Transformers game just last month. Does that open the door for a Tactics 2?
It's impossible to know the answer, but we do know that we loved Gears Tactics here at Pure Xbox! In our review, we gave the game a "Great" 8/10 and praised it as "a supremely confident, highly polished effort that successfully remoulds Gears of War into a thrilling and engaging new format."
You could make the comparison here with Halo Wars, although that game released in 2009 and was followed up with a sequel eight years later - with many other Halo titles in-between. Gears of War suddenly went from years of silence to Gears 5 in 2019 and Gears Tactics in 2020, so perhaps we could see a similar situation again if we're lucky.
Gears Tactics 2 in 2026 or 2027, then? It's wishful thinking on our part, and to be honest we think it'll probably remain that way. With Transformers: Reactivate on the shelf and Splash Damage hopefully looking for a new project to replace it though, we wouldn't be surprised if Xbox has started making a few calls for a Gears Tactics sequel!

YES!
It seems like such an obvious project to help bridge the gap between "proper" gears games.
Yes or at least apply the tactics genre to some of their other IP.
Gears Tactics was a great game.
@BacklogBrad Blinx Tactics.
I still need to finish playing the first game 💚
I am not a fan of that style of Game - its not something I enjoy or want from my gaming experience - so wrapping a 'Gears' Skin (or whatever other IP's - inc Marvel for example) around that game-play won't entice me.
That being said, if they do decide to make a sequel, I won't complain about it - it just won't be something I'd even play for Free on Game Pass as I don't want to spend my gaming time on Gameplay Mechanics I dislike!
Hell yeah. This would rock my world.
Incredibly good, underrated game. I play a ton of TRPGs and Gears is the only game to me that comes close to XCOM 2. It's so sad that Microsoft just sent it out to die with zero marketing.
Sure I would defo play it on gp...completed the first
I'm of the opinion we need more spin-offs of established IPs in gaming as a whole, it'd especially benefit Microsoft having their own subscription service. As an example, I feel a Halo: Spartan Assault sequel made for console instead of mobile would be a great addition. Have a 5 or 6 hour Campaign with Co-op, a Survival Mode, upgrades, Skulls, & in-game Challenges to unlock for replayability, and make it a budget release in the $20-30 range. I don't know why they're not making more smaller scale, XBLA-style games that'd really do well for filling out the Game Pass catalog.
Would love to see a second! Only played the first because it was Gears and hadn’t really played turn based before but really enjoyed it. Plus there soo much Gears lore I’m sure they’d be able to make the story interesting
It’s the only gears game I’ve ever liked. They did a good job
Gears of war rts
Yes. I liked much the game.
I really enjoyed Tactics, it's the Gears game I've enjoyed most since Microsoft bought the rights. I'd 100% love another. Even if they just want to do a re-imagining of the original trilogy in the Tactics style, I'd play it.
Gears Tactics is a fantastic game. Outside horde in Gears 5, it is probably my favourite Gears of War game since GoW3. I have completed the campaign 3 or 4 times, including on Insane, which is a real challenge. I would absolutely love a sequel.
That said, I would also really like to see the Coalition finish off the current trilogy because leaving it where they have, and instead focussing on E-Day, is just dumb, but I guess the thinking is that they can take E-Day to the PlayStation (probably day one) and thus introduce that audience to the Gears of War universe with a game that is, chronologically, the very first in the series before then porting the other games over...
I was hoping that MS would rotate development between Rise of, Age of, Halo Wars, and Gears Tactics IPs. Not to mention I would like to see another Toy Soldiers style and a Japanese style RTS game as well from them. It would give them a six year cycle for each franchise. Which I think is about right for these types of games.
The problem in the RTS genre is that RTS games that tend to follow profound evolution (single person to fully modern society) do really well, but other RTS style games don't seem to do as well. aka Civilization and Age of games seem really popular but Gears and Halo not so much.
