Talking Point: Amidst Rising Console Prices, What Would You Do If Your Xbox Broke Tomorrow?

The industry is in a bit of a mess at the moment when it comes to console prices. We've already heard a lot about about the component crisis that's causing console price tags to continually rise across the board, and it was back in June that Xbox specifically announced a significant increase for both the Xbox Series X and Series S.

Xbox officially expects the component crisis to get worse in 2027, so there's every chance that the Series X and S (along with the PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and whatever else) will go up in price again over the next 12 months-or-so.

Of course, none of that really matters if you bought your Xbox console a few years ago, but it will matter if the worst happens and your system suddenly stops responding. I came across people discussing this topic on Reddit yesterday and got inspired to share the same thing with our Pure Xbox readers, as it really does seem quite a quandary!

There are a few options if the worst was to happen, of course - you could reluctantly buy a new one and accept the price increase, look into a repair service that might be able to fix it, explore the second-hand market for a good deal, go back to your old Xbox consoles and stick with those for now, or just wait it out for the arrival of Project Helix.

For me personally, I'd be doing everything I could to get a working Xbox Series X ASAP. It's simply the most important console I own, and even if Helix releases sooner than expected, I still want to be able to play the likes of GTA 6 and Fable on the most powerful current Xbox console before the next generation rolls around.

That said, we can't all just go around throwing hundreds of dollars on gaming hardware! We're looking at £669.99 / $799.99 for the disc version of the Xbox Series X here in August 2026, and that's an extremely high price to pay for a broken console - surely a repair service could solve most problems for a fraction of the cost?!

I sincerely hope nobody reading this article has either suffered this issue recently or suffers it in the future, but assuming you haven't, I'd love to hear what you would do in this situation should it arise.
