A year or-so ago, Capcom delivered one of the finest remakes we've ever seen - with Resident Evil 4 Remake garnering a coveted 10/10 score here at Pure Xbox. The original is a classic, and the remake has only cemented the title's place in video game infamy. With the triple threat of Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remakes now conquered though, where does Capcom go next?
Well, as it happens, today marks 15 years since the original Resident Evil 5 launched on Xbox 360 - and we think that's the next remake Capcom should tackle. Yes, there's a case to be made for a modern remake of the original RE game, or perhaps a fresh take on Resident Evil Zero or Code: Veronica. However, after going back though RE4 last year, it's maybe a little more action-oriented than we remembered - and that's why we think RE5 is rife for a similar remake treatment to last year's effort.
Despite RE4's much faster pace, we really took to the game's overhaul last March. In fact, Capcom's new style of Resi making perhaps suits the Resident Evil 4 concept even better than way back when - with tank controls axed, additional character moves slotted in, and more solid, chunky shooting mechanics contributing to an even finer tuned action experience than the original.
Resident Evil 5 has long been a bit of a controversial RE release, but if you actually break things down the experience isn't a million miles away from RE4. The game's setting and the overall style of the title may make it feel a bit less 'survival horror' in many ways, but mechanically it follows the Resi 4 blueprint fairly closely, save for the addition of a two-player co-op option and a few more bonkers, OTT scenes scattered throughout the adventure.
In fact, Resident Evil 5's co-op play could mark another interesting test for Capcom's masterful Resi remaking. Would they ditch the option entirely? Would they keep the co-op-leaning sections intact and largely unchanged? Or would they tweak and re-work things to make for a better experience overall? With the way things have gone in recent years we'd expect Capcom to deliver the latter with a new take on Resident Evil 5.
Anyway, while we think Resident Evil 6 is too far gone for a remake (let's just leave that one in the history books, yeah?), we would like to see Resident Evil 5 get a new-age Capcom remake job before the team potentially looks back to older titles in the series. RE5 isn't perfect, in fact it's not much better than 'good' in our eyes, but it could benefit massively from a remake treatment similar to last year's Resident Evil 4. Could it become a modern classic? Who knows, but the potential is definitely there for an amazing Resident Evil 5 remake in the next few years.
