It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, to celebrate The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being added to Xbox Game Pass on December 15th, we're looking back at the history of Elder Scrolls games on Xbox.
There have famously only been a few of these dating back to 2002, but they're all highly beloved, and soon they'll all belong to Microsoft! Which is your favourite? Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)
Enter the world of Morrowind, a rich province of the Tamrielic Empire, filled with varied settlements and dominated by titanic mountains, vast cities and mysterious wastelands. Within this realm, you cast your destiny: become a noble knight on an epic quest or a trickster thief conniving his way toward leadership. Serve as a malevolent sorcerer or mystic healer, colonizer or outlander. Your actions determine the path you explore.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)
You live within the stunning capital province of Tamriel, called Cyrodiil. As a brave and noble warrior you set on a dangerous adventure, to find the hidden heir to a throne that sits empty, the previous emperor having been killed by an unknown assassin. With no true Emperor in place and no guidance for the people of Cyrodiil, the gates of Oblivion open, bringing only death and destruction upon the humble towns and villages.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
Skyrim is the homeland of the Nords, a fierce and proud warrior people who are used to the bitter cold and mountanous terrain that mark the lands of Skyrim. Wracked by civil war, and threatened by the return of the legendary dragons, Skyrim faces its darkest hour. You must make sense of this maelstrom, explore the frozen tundra and bring hope to the people.
The Elder Scrolls Online (2015)
Experience an ever-expanding story across all of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls Online, an award-winning online RPG. Explore a rich, living world with friends or embark upon a solo adventure. Enjoy complete control over how your character looks and plays, from the weapons you wield to the skills you learn – the choices you make will shape your destiny. Welcome to a world without limits.

I've played a bit of both Skyrim and Oblivion and found them to be incredible games (though my vote goes to Skyrim since I enjoyed it the most). However, I've never really played much of this series and seeing as how I tend to play games in order (regardless if they are connected or not), I'd love for Microsoft to release a remaster/remake of Morrowind (or even add it to BC) just so I can start there and move my way up.
Given how much crap I remember Oblivion getting, I'm surprised it's winning the polls. I mean I voted for it, but I'm usually on the wrong side of game opinions.
For example: Dragon Quest V is my least favourite Dragon Quest.
I have played all the single player Elder Scrolls games & love them all.
But my favorite has always been Oblivion. It was my first game of the HD era that made me go “Wow!” & it remains one of my favorite games of all time.
And that opening music is so incredible. Plus it has Sean Bean, who is one of my favorite actors. Lol.
Morrowind. Hands down. I still replay it to this day. Unmodded on Xbox, modded on PC.
@LtSarge Morrowind is already BC.
Morrowind was amazing for it's day, but it has problems beyond being dated. Namely the enormous empty spaces with nothing in them. Oblivion seems to be it's the sweet spot of an amazing true open world with tons to discover, but dense enough to never feel empty. We love "realistic"open worlds but imo games need to be denser than reality to be fun. Oblivion recognized that. One of the few games i was hyped beforehand, and then once i started playing for even more hyped. Spent like 5 months in only that game, bought a new keyboard and mouse for it, then new gpu just to max the settings. Runs and looks almost as good as the pc version did back then on 1x and series, too!
Skyrim is ok, but still haven't finished it. There's some magic lost somehow from oblivion.
Big shout to tes online though! Right behind Oblivion that game is seriously good. And huge. And plays like a tes game. I don't love mmo but that game really is good. I tried to get into ffxiv, keep hearing how good the story is... And i just cant get into it. The beginning is so 90s mmo....i can't really settle into it to pay $15 a month to play. But teso just plays like oblivion with slightly different battle controls and other people running around. And feels as story/side quest driven. And no monthly fee (unless you're a crafting maven). I bought all the regions and dlc. And a few qol purchases (a merchant you can summon anywhere to sell loot rather than ride to town, and another vendor... An inn maybe? You can summon anywhere. But otherwise it's an mmo you just buy the annual addon like destiny or other GaaS games. Not very mmo feeling like ffxiv.
Looking forward to the xsx patch to get back into it. Bought the latest expansion on the black friday sale!
But oblivion is still tops.
@LtSarge Morrowind is already BC, has been for ages and has been as low as $15 on sales often. Or actually looked pretty good on 1x, considering, but it's stunning how poorly that game has held up. Hard to really get back into... I'd love a remake. Remaster won't cut it... The gameplay and ui is just too dated. It's a win 9x game under the hood.
I'm ashamed to say i never played Elder Scrolls before..
@NEStalgia @JoakimZ Wow, weird how I've never noticed it on the store, lol. But yeah, as you said @NEStalgia, the game looks very dated so I might just wait for a remake instead.
Biased as I only played Skyrim. I did ESO for a few hours only and it wasn't as immersive as Skyrim in that short time
Skyrim and Elder Scrolls: Online are great but Morrowind is what got me into these types of games so has to be top choice.
Although I'm a fan of the entire saga, Morrowind is my all-time favorite installment of The Elder Scrolls. Exploring an intriguing world and discovering its hidden lore is always a plus in my reckoning.
Morrowind is utterly fantastic, I played it this year for the first time and it totally holds up. I will say though, I played the PC versions and modded the graphics and bugs to be a playable modern standard, and this poll is specifically the best ‘Xbox Elder Scrolls’ so couldn’t really give it my vote. Oblivion is flawed but really quite good too. My vote has to go to Skyrim, I know it’s a bit of a meme but it’s still the most engrossing WRPG out there for me. The setting, soundtrack and sidequests are ace. Yeah, it’s not as deep as Morrowind but it’s just so incredibly fun.
@NEStalgia
I agree about Morrowind. It was a great game for it’s time, but has aged quite poorly. It was developed for PC, so it was always clunky on Xbox.
Oblivion came out & was a revelation to me as far as the UI, quests, etc. Obviously, the big jump in visuals help, but it was the fact it was also made with consoles in mind made it less of a chore like Morrowind was.
Oblivion was the first game I bought for my 360. Loved that game, but Skyrim was straight up amazing. I still play it on my Switch.
Morrowind had the best ending and was very memorable. Also the warning that you would get for killing an important npc was great
I liked all three
I have to go with ESO. My main problem with Skyrim and Oblivion is the obnoxious weight limit. It's so annoying and just keeps me from enjoying the game.
@LtSarge fwiw, the morrowind expansion of teso can go a long way towards scratching that remake itch. And it'll be xsx enhanced sometime 2021.
The one where i pee on the Japanese girl and she giggles
Oh damn sorry wrong site.
I think that right answer is "that game what launched just right time for you". And for me it was Morrowind.
Skyrim felt like a step back in leveling and side quests. Granted I don’t miss jumping around every two seconds for acrobatics but oblivion felt like it was the sweet spot for engaging quests, character leveling and the world felt more vibrant.
For a nation in the middle of a civil war and dragon attacks Skyrim felt a bit dead. Plus the AI was especially stupid. If it weren’t for mods about half the NPCs would have died of vampire attacks.
@KelticDevil Oblivion was still very pc focused in the ui. It was more serviceable on console than morrowind that was old school spreadsheet ui, but it was still a little clunky on consoles. Skyrim is when they redesigned the ui for console-first. And pc players hated it for ruining the ui for console plebs.
That's tough! Skyrim and Oblivion are among my favorite games of all time.
Skyrim polished many systems. The skills are better. The dragons are awesome. The civil war is great. Mod support on consoles is huge. Ultimately, I choose Skyrim.
But Oblivion had a fantastic world. The portals to Oblivion were cool but too common. The guilds were great. The blurry filter got old. I'd love to replay it with Skyrim's systems worked in.
