It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, to go alongside the discussion surrounding the lack of Square Enix games on Xbox in 2023, we thought we'd take a look at some of the titles currently missing from Microsoft's consoles.
Specifically, we're focusing on games that either came out earlier in 2023, or are coming out within the next few weeks for platforms other than Xbox. We're well aware that Final Fantasy XVI is also heading to PlayStation 5 in just a couple of months, but we're keeping that one out of the poll - it would obviously dominate anyway!
So, out of the games we've listed below, which would you most like on Xbox?
Remember, you can only pick one!
Let's take a look at each one in depth:
Forspoken (January 24, 2023)
Lead Frey Holland on an unforgettable journey in her search for a way home after being mysteriously transported to an ancient, fantastical land.
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line (February 16, 2023)
Put together the party of your dreams with 100+ characters to choose from to celebrate the legendary music of the FINAL FANTASY series like never before.
Octopath Traveler 2 (February 24, 2023)
In the world of Solistia, eight new travelers venture forth into an exciting new era. Where will you go? What will you do? Whose tale will you bring to life? Every path is yours to take.
Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries Of Honjo (March 8, 2023)
How far would you go to bring someone back from the dead? Discover the depths that some will go to in this horror-adventure game.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series (April 19, 2023)
The original FINAL FANTASY games are brought to life with completely new graphics and audio in the 2D pixel remaster series
Live A Live (April 27, 2023)
The legend is alive! LIVE A LIVE, originally only released for the Super Famicom in Japan, is being revived on Steam! Experience this legendary RPG, brought alive in the same HD-2D visual style as OCTOPATH TRAVELER.
Let us know which of these Square Enix games you'd most like to see on Xbox down below.

aaaah, yet another article to get toxic fanboy comments. sadly looking through site history it seems the sony hate articles get you the most traffic, so i fully get it but its such a shame thats whats needed for engagement.
MIcrosoft has so much good stuff on there/coming. yet focusing on whatnot got.
None of those game’s particularly appeal to me as I’ve never been a fan of JRPG’s.
For those who only have an Xbox though its disappointing that Square seems to have all but given up on the console. I would have thought the sales they do make, even if the numbers aren’t huge, would be enough to cover the cost of porting it to Xbox, and potentially generate more sales further down the line once players know their console of choice will continue to be supported?
Yeah I have both systems but XSX is usually packed with GP games so I have more storage room on my PS5 anyway!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Sadly all too accurate. It's the same everywhere sadly. A recent Sony v MS article on Eurogamer got 400+ comments when they often struggle to get 50.
Sadly it's a story as old as news publications "bad news sells" and whipping up your readership into a tribalistic frenzy is a sure way to garner engagement.
More people should keep their eyes on Paranormasight. It's a Japanese horror visual novel game that provides plenty of scares, which is impressive for a visual novel. I'm really liking it so far. It's only on Switch right now but hopefully it'll arrive on other platforms in the future!
@themightyant i try and avoid those articles. its very repetitive comments. its also why i own all 3 this gen. no loyalty and no worries
Happy Easter, everyone. Now let the battle begin!
I think that Sony won't buy Square Enix so these games will come to Xbox eventually. The one I want the most is Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection and, in second place, Octopath Traveller II because I loved the first one on Series X.
EDIT: The cost of porting is zero, Windows=Xbox.
I want Saga Frontier.
For spoken would be cool, but I don't even know half tbf
Square Enix games unfortunately never did anything for me except when they published Sleeping Dogs that game is great.
FF VII remake which isn't an option. But yea, that's ALL I want.
Don’t care on my own behalf. I already own them all on other platforms, except the Pixel Remasters (though I will own them soon, as well, and likely on PS rather than Switch due to the fact that I’d like to have the whole series on one platform).
HOWEVER, I DO hope more people get to experience Forspoken, especially with how toxic the PS fanbase was toward it. The game’s fantastic and will very likely end the year in my top 10 games. Xbox’s community may appreciate what the title is more?
Been playing Octopath 2 since release and it’s really good so I’ll vote for that. Xbox only players should be able to play it.
Switch is 1st priority for RPGs for me. So if it's an RPG, and it's on the Switch, I'm getting it for the Switch. (Convenience of playing anywhere makes it far more likely for me to actually finish the game). The ones that are too technologically advanced for Switch, those are the ones I'd want on Xbox. But since they aren't coming to Xbox, I have a PS5. (Literally, the only reasons I have a PS5 is Final Fantasy and PSVR 2)
Voted none of them as I play the majority of square enix games on playstation and the few Nintendo exclusives on the switch. But if I were asked which one I'd reccomend for xbox players to play if they were to get these it would be Octopath Traveler 2. Total improvement over the first game in every way and the HD 2D graphics are gorgeous.
I wish square enix would remake final fantasy 1-6 using the octopath traveler engine.
I am honestly not interested in most of the games listed, the only game that would be cool to see on xbox would be Forspoken
Also Forspoken is already coming to xbox in just under two years time and Id wager will be on gamepass. And technically it's already on the xbox store.
https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/store/forspoken/9p3b7mt34dls
@UltimateOtaku91 Interesting, i did not realize that Forspoken was a timed exlusive, i thought it was a full exlusive to Playstation consoles.
@grumpypotato Nioh? Trek to Yomi?
@Epux_fhouwuo yeah not until around the 24th January 2025 though, xbox will be getting the better version at launch as its had a lot of QoL updates since and there's a story DLC coming out in may which I'd expect will be already bundled with the Xbox version.
@Moonglow Or more Minecraft Legends news since its coming out next week.
none of them
If there were more options, My pick:
FF 16
FF 7 Remake Intergrade
Tactics Ogre Reborn
NEO The World Ends With You
Trials of Mana
Legend of Mana
Secret of Mana
Valkyrie Elysium
Front Mission Remake
Harvestella
The Last Remnant Remastered
it's sad that none of them coming to xbox
Would have liked to have seen the new final fantasy coming in June on series x at least.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I wish I had your self control. More often I’m like a moth to flame, but trying to be better. Enjoy playing whatever you are playing on.
From this list, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters easy.
Banjo- wrote:
That’s not true at all. While there are some similarities and it will be easier than some ports, there are also a lot of differences and it takes plenty of work to get a PC game running on Xbox, doing full QA and more. The cost CERTAINLY isn’t zero.
I picked FF Pixel Remaster, since its what I'd be most interested in based on the options given. However, what I'd really like is FF7R & FF16.
They all suck
Removed - flaming/arguing
The Pixel Remaster
Octopath 2
Triangle Strategy
And since NONE of that is happening, I'll just play them on Steamdeck. Microsoft should fire whomever peed in Squares Cheerios and pissed them off.
Pixel Remasters by default since it’s 6 games; but I really want to check out the new Theatrhythm as I loved the 3DS games (and Melody of Memory on Xbox).
It be nice to get all Square Enix games but I'd be happy with just Final Fantasy 14.
Honestly the only one I care about that isn’t listed here yet is Final Fantasy 16. I’ve played FF 7 Remake and it’s bloated and over-rated IMO. Would play the original any day over the remake.
Octopath 2 without a doubt. I loved the first game enough to 100% it on Switch, which I only do for games I absolutely adore since it doesn't have any kind of Achievement or Trophy system. Still very weird that the first game is on Xbox 'n not on PS, but the sequel is on PS and not Xbox.
We know what SE's and Sony's 2 year exclusivitity contracts are like, so I wouldn't worry about Forspoken
Octopath Traveller 2 out of the list above, purely because the 1st was on Xbox, but the 2nd is not.
@Moonglow "Why not make articles about Mighty Doom updates or the rumored Blizzard survival game? There are far more tangible topics for Xbox gamers"
Or write an article for older gamers, about how we no longer feel the need to buy another version of a 25-30 year old game for the 10th time.
Or an article about how collecting things is a waste of time and money.
Or how us older gamers are looking for something new...not the same old games with updated graphics and sound.
Or how most games just aren't fun anymore, because I've played them before, just with different packaging.
Or how 95% games now a days are unoriginal and feel a lot like the money grab developers made during the Atari era.
There's so many better things to write about, instead of what's coming and going from game pass. Or what's on sale.
Tell us something we don't know.
Lol none ..I have no desire to play any on my ps5 so I ain't fussed about them coming to Xbox
@Wheatly couldnt agree more. i hate games thats loaded with a bunch of crap on the menus and navigating, i hate reading as is and thats the last thing i want to do in a game is sort inventory or learn a bunch of tacked on gimmicks instead of keeping it simple and having all the depth be in the gameplay. its what put me off gotham knights the most aside from the unbearable 30fps. the depth was in inventory and menus instead of the combat/world/gameplay .
I voted Pixel Remaster collection. If only to play Final Fantasy 6 again which is my favourite of the series.
As for those criticising the site chasing fanboy clicks, it's worth remembering that most of the comments and posts on exclusivity articles are migratory Sony fanboys who like to stir up the pot.
This article is simply a pleasant, what would you like, article. Not everything has to be tribal idiots with an undercurrent as to which is console is better. Speaks volumes about the readers who take it that way...
Hard pick between Octopath Traveler II and the Pixel Remasters, but picked OT2 in the survey.
Forspoken!, there is good reason why it only scored 64% on. Metacritic it's terrible.
@Wheatly agreed
On this list, just octopath 2. Overall, FFVIIR and FFXIV
none. i wish sony buys them lol.
@Microbius so you were interested, read a review and said naw, I don’t think for myself I’ll let these other holier then thou d bags do it. Your my hero
Anyone who voted for Forspoken must hate their free time
@Wheatly
Well, personally, every game I play now a days, gives me that feeling of "been there, done that". I was talking to a friend about the excitement that came with each new generation of games from back in the day. Using Morrowind as an example, the level of interaction within the game world and the true sense of exploration, it had never been done before! RPG's haven't evolved much since then.
Could you imagine, if we combined AI with voice recognition? It would definitely add some depth to fetch quests. Or what about an open world that's truly open world? You see a building? Well, seamlessly go inside, no more loading interiors from a doorway in the exterior. And what about destructible environments? Speaking of, what ever happened to Red Faction?
And since games are online now, what about integrating a mobile mini game that complements the console version?
What about a fallout 76, mmo town building tower defense type genre?
And going back to been there done that...how about a game, where you don't have to grind to become powerful...you start powerful and enhance those powers even further? Grindings fun and all...but I've been doing it for over 30 years. I'm tired of starting with a handgun/wooden sword.
In the end, I'm just looking for something new. I want a sense of adventure. I want a new formula, mix it up and stop going for what sells.
One last thing. They have yet to make an open world metroidvania. And if & when they finally do, I swear, they better not lock areas behind color coded doors.
I want the Pixel Remaster of FF III.
I won’t be happy until I get a remaster of the pixel remasters.
I honestly don't want anymore of their games. SE is just a lost cause now.
Sony and Square Enix definitely have some dodgy backroom deal worked out to exclude Xbox.
@grumpypotato Objectifying women and fetishizing young school girls is definitely a HUUGE problem in anime-style JRPGs. Truly disgusting! Not to mention the constant grind and filler you have to go through in order to progress through the story. I'll stick with Starfield which allows proper player freedom.

Personally, the only Square Enix games I tended to play are the games they sold to Embracer so I have no interest in these games. If I wanted, I could play most/all on my PS5.
If a game I desperately want isn't available on a Platform I own, I would end up buying that platform to gain access. That is what Exclusives do - they get you to buy into a specific Platform. Just because a Platform has 'exclusives' that were owned, made and published by a 3rd Party known for being 'multi-platform' doesn't change the fact that if they are 'exclusive' for any reason, then it's to entice you to buy into that Platform and spend your time gaming there...
@themightyant I agree, @Banjo- the cost to porting a game to a 'fixed' platform like a Console can be huge. Its not just 'porting' to another 'windows' device, its also optimising and testing, manufacturing and distribution of Physical media to 'sell', continuous support and updates post release etc. Most, if not all have bespoke Console settings with all Shaders Compiled (time, money and effort) and require Platforms to verify their games prior to launch (at a cost) so before its even released, there is a LOT of cost involved.
Lets just say for 'illustrative' purposes that they need to sell 1m at Full Price to cover all their costs to bring a game to a console and provide the 'same' post release support and yet their games tend not to sell 'well' on Xbox - maybe hitting 1m eventually after 'sales/discounts', they could lose money on Xbox - even if Playstation sells LOTS and makes more than enough to offset the 'loss'
@BAMozzy Absolutely right. All those factors/costs and more, it absolutely isn't as simple as we have a windows game, it works on Xbox for nothing.
@themightyant I’ve literally had the exact same debate here and gotten the same level of hostility. Porting a game between Xbox and PC takes more than a simple click of a button.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Final Fantasy VII remake and XVI are all I really care about from Square-Enix
@BAMozzy @themightyant What I said is that there are Xbox games that are literally the Windows version (true) and that devkits are exactly the same for Windows and Xbox (true).

I'll agree that it's probably for the best to focus on what IS hitting Xbox, instead of fixating on publishers that don't want to support the platform.
Removed - flaming/arguing
Absolutely not Forspoken! Bombed badly on the PS5 and Sony closed down the developer studio due to poor sales from terrible optimisation, poor gameplay and story.
Apart from Forspoken and FF Pixel Remaster, I never heard of the rest.
Wow, based on the comments it now makes sense why these games are not on Xbox lol
Very surprised Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16 were not on this list to vote on!!
Those are the only games I could see actually getting a substantial number of sales for Square on Xbox really
Voted 'none of them' for the simple fact that I have a Nintendo Switch and if I was interested in any of the good games on that list then I would play them there. The only game I would like to come to Xbox is Final Fantasy but it is not reason enough for me to purchase a PS5... not by a long shot.
@EvenStephen7 You are his second account, I guess.
@Banjo- there is a different dev kit that is used for Xbox called GDKX, so that statement is definitely not true. They are about 80% similar, but not the same.
What games use the same code on Xbox that it uses for windows? It must be some very simple UWP flash style stuff that does not use any hardware/graphics acceleration.
@Moto5 Since when Windows games don't use hardware/graphics acceleration?
https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2020/03/microsoft-just-made-it-a-lot-easier-to-port-cool-pc-games-to-xbox/
Don't pick up a word to shoehorn conclusions like them and see the big picture. What I'm saying is that porting a Windows game to Xbox is very easy so if a Windows game doesn't come to Xbox is for other reasons. Or is it a coincidence that Square Enix games that are available for Windows are not available for Series S|X? The culprit is not porting costs or the supposedly small amount of Xbox players that play Japanese games but Sony and their exclusion deals. They are trying to spread that lie of porting costs and smaller user base not worth it.
Square Enix has lost my business by not shipping their best games on my primary console. Until FF XIV and FF VII Remake ship on XB, Square has zero chance of getting a cent of my money.
@Banjo- windows games do, but one that does could not just run on Xbox. It would need to be built in GDKX. You seem to be confused on what DirectX is. It is not a development kit. Nothing in that article supports what you are saying.
Both of your statements you said are true are actually false.
@Moto5 Yes it does and there are many other articles that you can Google if you're interested in Xbox development, that explain how easy is to port Windows games to Xbox. It's not a problem at all. What you say that it's false it's true, actually.
@Banjo- what if the game uses Vulkan and not direct x? Why aren't we seeing most of the Steam store on Xbox?
You are confusing graphics APIs with dev kits. Your statement about the GDK is false. And you did not provide an example of a game that uses the same "version" on Xbox as windows.
Windows PC and Xbox are basically the same platform:
So maybe it's you who are confused. I provided one article about architecture, I can find another about development kits or you can search it yourself. Are you trolling or do you honestly believe that porting Windows games to Xbox is not easy? I don't know why I should search it for you when you haven't provided any. If you want to believe that porting costs are expensive and that porting to Xbox is difficult, I honestly don't care. The truth is that Xbox games and PC games literally run on the same OS (Windows) and that porting a Windows game to Xbox is very easy.
@Banjo- I didn't say anything was expensive or difficult. And that article was just about direct x.
You are now pivoting to easy porting to Xbox from same code on Xbox.
Why have you not addressed your statement about the development kit being the same? (it's not) Or provides one example of a game that uses the same version? Surely if you know of even one it would be easy enough to say what it is.
@Moto5 OK, I think you're not trying to hold a conversation but trolling and trying to annoy, goodbye. It's so ridiculous from you, Mightyant and Bamozzy to cherry-pick sentences to try to prove me wrong when what I'm saying is true: porting from Windows to Xbox is very easy and inexpensive.
@Banjo- So you consider it trolling when you get called out for false statements?
Banjo-Yesterday, 1:12pm
@BAMozzy @themightyant What I said is that there are Xbox games that are literally the Windows version (true) and that devkits are exactly the same for Windows and Xbox (true).
You are telling BAMozzy and themightygiant they are wrong, but they are not. Both things you label as true are false and now you are trying to deflect off your false statements by talking about direct x and ease of porting.
I'm so tempted to vote Forspoken just to troll the poll, lol.
They're all trash.
As someone who has played and bought fourteen Final Fantasy games on Xbox, I had to vote for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters.
On one hand, I'd like to play OT 2 on my Xbox since I'm playing through the first one on it. On the other hand, it would be groovy to get the FF pixel remasters. However, since I also have as PS, I'll still be able to play them so I'm not missing out on them.
As much as it irritates me not see Final Fantasy 7 remake or 16 on XBox Pixel remastered is just I don't even know where we can't even get THAT Square Enix!? Its literally everything else. Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana that hurt too. It's so many. We cant get any of them? So annoyed with Square Enix. Like we can get FF7,8,9,10,12,13 all the sequels, 15 but NOT 16 or the first 6 Final Fantasies or 7 remake of course. Give us Octopath Traveler but not the sequel. I don't understand Square Enix... :-/
