Are you ready for a Sunday of spooks, ghouls and bumps in the night? It's the perfect weekend to be scared, or for those who are of the faint of heart, embracing the light-hearted vibes of Halloween.
There are dozens upon dozens of titles out there that embrace the atmosphere of the holiday. Ranging from terrifying haunted house delights such as Resident Evil to movie night experiences with The Dark Pictures Anthology - there's something for everyone, no matter your preference.
But specifically in terms of the franchises below, which is your favourite? What feels like a warm, cosy comfort blanket for you on this dark, spooky night? Let's see which titles we're working with:
The Evil Within
Developed by Shinji Mikami and the talented team at Tango Gameworks, The Evil Within embodies the meaning of pure survival horror. Highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story are combined to create an immersive world that will bring you to the height of tension. With limited resources at your disposal, you’ll fight for survival and experience profound fear in this perfect blend of horror and action.
Silent Hill
Silent Hill is a horror media franchise centered on a series of survival horror video games, created by Keiichiro Toyama, developed and published by Konami, and published by its subsidiary Konami Digital Entertainment.
Resident Evil
In 1998 a special forces team is sent to investigate some bizarre murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Upon arriving they are attacked by a pack of blood-thirsty dogs and are forced to take cover in a nearby mansion. But the scent of death hangs heavy in the air. Supplies are scarce as they struggle to stay alive.
Dead Space
When an immense mining ship, the USG Ishimura, comes into contact with a mysterious alien artifact in a remote star system, its communications with Earth are mysteriously cut off. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the Ishimura's communications array, but he arrives to find a living nightmare-the ship is a floating bloodbath, the crew unspeakably mutilated and infected by an ancient alien scourge. Clarke's repair mission becomes one of survival as he fights not just to save himself, but to return the artifact to the planet ... at any cost.
Bioshock
Return to the cities of Rapture and Columbia and experience the award-winning BioShock franchise like never before. BioShock: The Collection contains all single-player content from BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite, all single-player add-on content, the “Columbia’s Finest” pack, and Director’s Commentary: Imagining BioShock, featuring Ken Levine and Shawn Robertson.
Outlast
In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.
Condemned
While investigating the growing list of serial killers, Agent Thomas concludes that something is twisting the bodies and souls of those that society has left behind. The homeless, addicted and deranged are rising from the city’s underbelly and committing mindless acts of violence. Could there be an unseen connection between the increasing brutality of the latest serial killings and the increasing crime rate?
Left 4 Dead
From Valve (the creators of Counter-Strike, Half-Life and more) comes Left 4 Dead, a co-op action horror game for the PC and Xbox 360 that casts up to four players in an epic struggle for survival against swarming zombie hordes and terrifying mutant monsters
The Dark Pictures Anthology
The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of interactive drama survival horror video games developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The series premiered with Man of Medan in 2019, which is followed by Little Hope (2020) and House of Ashes (2021).
Five Nights At Freddy's
Welcome to your new summer job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where kids and parents alike come for entertainment and food as far as the eye can see! The main attraction is Freddy Fazbear, of course; and his two friends. They are animatronic robots, programmed to please the crowds! The robots' behavior has become somewhat unpredictable at night however, and it was much cheaper to hire you as a security guard than to find a repairman.
Let us know which of these horror franchises is your favourite below.

Dead Space. And that's not even close!
I'm a huge fan of State of Decay as well.
That is a tough question. Resident evil is my favorite series here but I don’t think of it as horror game as much as I do Outlast or Silent Hill.
Dead Space. Love 1 and 2 to bits. However, Condemned comes as a close second. How I wish MS made part 2 backward compatible...
Yeah definitely a tough question as I like The Evil Within, Dead Space, Resident Evil and Outlast a lot. I'm probably going to like Silent Hill a lot as well since that franchise seems like right up my alley, but I haven't played it yet so I can't say anything about it.
BioShock was meh in terms of horror as it started out great but then it became just another standard first-person shooter. I also didn't like the first entry in The Dark Pictures, Man of Medan, but I've heard that the later games are better so I'm looking forward to playing those in the future.
Resident Evil gets my vote just out of pure longevity. That series has some staying power (obviously). Silent Hill gets a nod but let's be honest, the first two games were great and then came a whole lotta 'meh.'
So you forgot that Project Zero (known in US as Fatal Frame) exists, right? @Flurbdurb ...and that it might be someone's favourite (facepalm).
Dead Space and by a lot, 3 awesome games, the 2nd arguably the best horror game ever made
Dead Space, especially the first one. However, I also love RE1 Remake.
Also, why does the Bioshock segment have a picture from Resident Evil 2 under it?
Silent Hill, hands down.
I remember getting home and firing the original up on launch day. A weekend with that game changes a man 😂
The sequel is one of my favourite games of all time.
The rest of the series I'm not fussed about.
Honourable mention to Dead Space and Resi ☺️
Silent Hill 2, thinking back to it still makes me look over my shoulder
Resident Evil took my vote, but Silent Hill’s peaks are higher than Resident Evil’s. PT, for me, is still pound for pound the best horror experience in gaming to this day.
The scariest game is fatal frame lol
But on this list i think dead space and resident evil. Resident was scary when you where out of bullets and hear uuhhrrrrrrrrrzzzzombie 😂
Bioshock is considered horror?
Also there is a misplaced RE picture there.
No love for Clock Tower and Fatal Frame.
The great thing about Project Zero/Fatal Frame is that it's a different kind of horror. People expecting the average head-blowing action that has been standardised in the video game industry over the years are generally disappointed. These two reviews describe it rather well:

You guys should have acknowledged State of Decay on the poll, since that's an Xbox exclusive and it's much better than The Evil Within... TEW wins hands down as the cheesiest horror game ever. All lines from Sebastián Castellanos are ultimate cringe 😆
@Magabro State of Decay 2 runs and plays wonderfully on Series X. I consider it more a survival simulator or strategy game but it's a really great game, addictive, entertaining, fun. This polished version would have got much better reviews.
@BlueOcean Undead Labs has done a fantastic job updating it since the release. Even after SoD 3 was announced they kept adding loads of content.
But in my opinion it's definitely a horror game. The permadeath mechanic keeps the stakes high, specially on higher difficulties. You're always a few mistakes from losing a valuable character.
Where's Alien?
Suprised to see Bioshock there...but it's my favourite probably out the list so I picked it
I like most of the games listed (though I haven't played all of them), but my favorite horror franchise is Fatal Frame.
@gollumb82 I wish Condemned 2 would come to Xbox BC. I have the 360 copy, but with all the lack of new games added, its the only way to play it.
@fbnaulin what do mean instead of that we have the masterpiece of horror that is five nights at freddies
@Thelastjedi2007 LOL
@Krysus Alien is a movie franchise. This list contains games that are strictly FROM vide games only. No video games with licenses from existing IPs
Too late to post here, maybe, but I would add F.E.A.R to the list. 1 and 2.
