It's time for another round of Pick One! This week, with Ghost Recon Frontline having been announced by Ubisoft a few days ago, we thought we'd take a look back at the history of the series of Xbox so far.
There have been seven mainline games and a couple of expansions released over the past 20 years, but for the purposes of this feature, we're going to leave the expansions out of the roundup and focus purely on the main games (but you can still vote for them in the poll if you want to!).
Let's take a look at what we're working with:
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (2001)
In Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon you'll lead a team of six elite special-force soldiers through the deadly realism of tomorrow's battlefields. Outnumbered and outgunned, this Green Beret team, nicknamed "The Ghosts", uses the latest technology and tactics to conquer the battlefield swiftly, silently and invisibly.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 (2004)
Set in North Korea in the year 2011, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 continues the tradition of intensity and realism associated with Ubisoft's Tom Clancy brand, with an emotionally charged storyline, a completely redesigned graphics engine and the most intuitive gameplay to date, to fully immerse gamers into the chaos of a high tech war.
Tom Clancy's Advanced Warfighter (2006)
The face of war has changed. New enemies and new threats require a new type of warfare - a new type of soldier. Enter the Ghosts. Become the soldier of the future: Using a fully integrated combat system with cutting-edge weapons and revolutionary communication systems, gain a realistic view of how war will be fought in the next decade.
Tom Clancy's Advanced Warfighter 2 (2007)
You are the Soldier of the Future 2.0. All systems have been upgraded to give you more power and control on the battlefield. Lead your team of elite Special Forces for the first time on US soil. You are the last line of defense and must do what it takes to be victorious.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (2012)
Armed with the most advanced combat technology, the Ghosts are an untraceable unit of soldiers who track down the highest-value targets in the highest-risk conflict areas around the world. In the near future, 4 of these elite soldiers serve as the tip of the spear in a hidden war raging across the globe.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands (2017)
Create a team with up to 3 friends in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands and enjoy the ultimate military shooter experience set in a massive, dangerous, and responsive open world.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint (2019)
Become a Ghost, an elite spec ops soldier, tasked with a special mission to Auroa. The remote archipelago has lost contact with outside world due to Skell Technology turning hostile. The Wolves, a rogue spec ops team led by your ex–brother-in-arms, have taken over and are hunting you down. Lead your team through the island landscape and save the civilians without being noticed.

2006 advanced war fighter.
I know it was a closed ish scripted game but at the time it was really good.
Wildlands was just a great game in general. Story and villan grounded in enough realism to make you care, fun combat, and cool gadgets. I like some of the older ghost recons but there are others that feel similar. Even Breakpoint deviated enough to lose that uniqueness Wildlands has.
@NickTheGeek
That’s good you might be as old as me
As I went advanced war fighter 😂
Advanced Warfighter. I didn't play many of the Ghost Recon games unfortunately, as I was much more into Halo and Gears then, but I do remember playing that a decent amount and enjoying it.
The last real Ghost Recon games were 2 and Summit Strike.
After those they went to hell and started down Ubisoft's generic formula we have nowadays.
The 2006 / Advanced War Fighter on 360, fond XL memories
Advanced War Fighter is easily the best of the Xbox games. I would say the best of the series are easily PC games though.
Oh, definitely the original. It's launch was so exciting at the time, loved it 😁
As a side note, does anyone else have fond memories of Hidden & Dangerous and Conflict Desert Storm?
Thinking back, I used to love tactical military shooters. Haven't played one in years and years.
Avanced Warfighter 2....such lovely memories playing that game...my first online shooter I think
The first Advance Warfighter, Multiplayer was amazing..
As an old fart who has been a GR fan since the original on PC, it's my opinion that GR2: Summit Strike had the best MP in the series. In GR2 and GR2:SS you could play a mission with 16 players and permadeath. The more players that died, the harder it became to complete the mission. Couple that with the non-existence of party chat, and it would get quieter and quieter as you went further into the mission and more people died and got kicked back to the lobby. Everyone in the lobby could watch the rest of the match and could talk to each other but not the living players. Going back to the lobby after dying/finishing the mission would get you greeted with either cheers or boos, depending on the manner of your return. It was some of the best online gaming I've ever experienced. The early days of XBL.
GRAW and GRAW2 had co-op with completely broken A.I. and spawn triggers, and didn't even launch with actual co-op missions until way later (after the GR community complained enough). Even then they were broken messes due to the terrible enemy A.I. that knew where you were at all times and the scripted events that practically forced you to approach the situation exactly the same way each time.
I don't mean to sound elitist, but if you're a GR fan that didn't come around until GRAW or Future Soldier, you really can't understand why some of us older guys have been asking for "classic" GR for years now, to which we have been completely ignored and the series continues to veer further and further away from what made it great in the first place.
From an unseasoned Ghost Recon player: Future Soldier. The previous games failed to hold my interest, but FS felt like a blend of Splinter Cell Convictions and Rainbow Six Vegas and I had a blast with it.
This is tough. From pure nostalgia I'd go with first ghost recon from early Xbox live days. But wildlands is an amazing awesome game overall.
I enjoyed them all, up til future soldier. Future soldier was when they went all michael bay.
I loved Wildlands, but the game was almost too big! I never got around to finishing the campaign 🙄
