It's time for another round of Pick One! This weekend, we thought we'd take a look back at what Xbox Game Pass delivered for us in August 2023, which included two rare Pure Xbox 10/10 scores for Sea of Stars and Quake 2!
Elsewhere, we received plenty of other excellent additions throughout those few weeks including Firewatch, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Everspace 2, Humankind, Limbo and more!

I (like a fair few) grew up with quake2...25yrs later, its not lost a shred of its gusto...those flying things can still go get ****ed mind 🙂
A Short Hike is my favorite game of the list, but I’ve not completed Sea of Stars, which starts off super promising.
Age of empires 4
Everspace 2 and Texas Chainsaw for me.
SoS. And it wasn't even close. Texas chainsaw was fun though for a couple weeks.
Quake 2, hands down.
I played the original competitively in my teens and still occasionally booted it up on PC. So them breathing new life into it has honestly been one of the best things to happen in gaming for me personally this year.
Sea of stars, no question. Game has been an extreme joy to play through. doing all the end game stuff before finishing it.
Wait! What? Baldur's Gate 3 wasn't the only release in the month of August? I mean, it is the only game I played in August, but...
Kidding! Please don't shoot me... 😂
I am looking forward to diving into Quake at some point, in the very distant, far, far future after I have finished both BG3 and Starfield...
I'm still enjoying TOEM from July, but I did have a walkabout or two in A Short Hike in August before returning to TOEM.
Tough call between Sea of Stars and Everspace 2. Great month!!!
Sea of Stars is the only game I’ve played on Gamepass this month and I’m really enjoying it. The characters and story so far are really cheesy but the gameplay and music is great.
Just me but Sea of Stars I couldn't get in to. Just can't stand the "take turns to hit each other" mechanics. Gutted to be missing out on what is obviously a great game ☹️
I do love Limbo and Firewatch but they were done with years ago.
Age of Empires IV. But I haven’t played Sea of Stars yet so there’s a decent chance that’ll be my favorite when I get around to it.
Short hike was super fun and Sea of Stars was a surprise. Everspace 2 was supposed to be the one I played but got sidetracked by the other 2…
I've gotta say Quake 2 because I've only just started SoS, I know I'm going to love it but I can't see me picking up another game this year now Starfield has it's hooks in me
Top new game Sea of Stars. Celeste one of my tip 20 of all time, though.
Age of Empires 4 is most definitely missing from this list!
Quake 2, humankind, age of empires 4, call of the wild...it was a good month.
I picked A Short Hike, which was decent overall. I played Celeste, Limbo, and Quake 2 RTX all within the last couple years, and my buddies and I have only played a couple rounds of Texas Chainsaw Massacre so far.
I played both A Short Hike and Limbo for the first time this month. They were both very solid games. The only other game on this list that I have played is Firewatch, which I played a couple years ago on PC(still chose it as my favorite). I'm still hoping to get to Celeste and Sea of Stars at some point in the future.
Out of interest what is the average age of people posting here??
Age of empires 4 or quake 2 remaster or sea of stars I have no idea which one choose lol
Sea of Stars is a great old school RPG, really enjoyed it. Quake 2 of course is a classic and really like the visual improvements of the remaster. Good times!
@Fiendish-Beaver that is a very distant future indeed. Haha
QUAKE TWO GOOD
Sea of stars, without a doubt. I don't usually enjoy turn based combat all that much but the game, combat included, is absolutely wonderful.
A really great month for game pass, in my opinion, and September and October look set to be same.
Everspace 2, but I haven't tried Sea of Stars yet. It's on the list for after Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3.
@StonyKL it's your first turn base rpg really? Lots of great rpgs have that style. That sucks you can't get into them your missing out on lots of great games.
